My pack that I carry is a Camel back. I didnt think to put Hot or Warm water in it. I might do that the next time I have a long cold sit. Thanks for the tip and saving me money....not having to go out and get a thermos right away.
-
Anyone take a thermos with nice hot something to drink? I've thought about it, something to sip on to help take the chill off, but I'm concerned about scent as per usual, especially maybe during bow season. Hot Water? Coffee? Tea? Coco? Soup broth? Anyone?

Thought about taking out my SKS, need to put in the 5rd mag first. -
Hey everyone, I was wondering if I could use baking soda in a front load HE washing machine to wash my hunting clothes. I searched around online but didnt really find any solid answers. I'm just being a cheap ass and not going out to buy unscented laundry soap. Thanks.

Thanks everyone, I wasnt aware of many of the brands listed, I'll check them out.

Thanks for the tips fellas. Muzzyloader, where are you in Chemung Cty? I'm originally from Lowman/North Chemung area, Live in Cicero (Syracuse area) now.

So I want to invest in some more base layer clothing. I have some of the old school waffle style long john bottoms and tops. I also have some microfleece stuff from Redhead. Just wondering what else is out there that is good for long sits. I dont really want to break the bank with Under Armour(plus I hear its not all that great for cold weather) I know Target and Walmart carry the similar products such as Champion, and Starter. Any input would be great. Thanks.

Good to know, I live right in Cicero, and was wondering if they operated at all right here in CNY. The number is now saved in my phone.

Looks painfully familiar. I shot a buck Saturday morning just before 8 am. he was 20-25 yards away down hill slightly, and quartered into me, I think I hit high. I waited 30 minutes before getting down. When I did I found hair and blood immediately where he stood when I shot, followed the small drops about 30 yards, and found my arrow soaked with bright red blood with little bubbles on the fletches and nock. Waited another 20 minutes or so for my buddy to come off the hill, and then we started to track, so about an hour or so after the shot we are walking the blood trail....we no lie went about 400 yards consistently down hill, the blood trail was heavy, and we found spots where the deer stopped, as there was large ammounts of blood drops(no puddles) on the ground and occasionally we found some spray patterns next to that. Followed all the way down to a patch of crab apple trees, and the trail went cold....like he up and vanished. We stopped searching around 11. By 1PM I went back in retraced the trail.....back to the crab apples, and picked it up a bit further, same thing big drip pattern, a few drops about 2-3 feet away, and nothing. I stuck my arrow in the ground, and started to do circles, nothing....came onto a ridgeline above a creek bed about 50 yards below the last bit of blood, and combed the ridge line 3 or 4 times back and forth...nothing....dropped into the creek bottom, and scoured that back and forth...nothing...I left the woods by 4PM, I was unable to get there yesterday due to family obligations, and right now I'm at work, feeling lower than a heel about the whole thing.

Good job. Congratulations. I finally got a hit on a deer myself with the bow,(after 4 years of bow hunting) unfortunately I think rookie mistakes caused me to bump him while tracking, and my blood trail went cold after about 400 yards(no exageration)....7 hours of searching and nothing to show for it except one bloody arrow and sore legs. Thinking about going back and searching more, but I feel its bleek at this point. But enough of my sob story. Good Job.

Is it just me or do the BIG boys sort of go against the norm, in terms of when they move and do things vs. the rest of the deer? This morning a friend and I were hunting up on a large hill in Cazenovia(Madison cty), and it was pretty windy up there, and for about 3 hours or so we didnt see a darn thing, so my buddy text me, and said he was done and was going to start walking over to me, and we'd either figure out a game plan or just go get some breakfast. As he's getting out of his stand to make his way across a corn field to where I was, a HUGE(easily a big 10 pt) buck saunders out of the brush and into a small strip of corn. At this point my buddy is already walking the corn edge, making his way around the perimeter of the field. By the time he gets to the area where the buck is, the deer blasts out of the corn, and makes his way along the field edge and back into the woods in out in front of my stand, as soon as hes in the wood line, he's back to a casual walk with his nose down to the ground. So are the BIG boys more unpredictable than the rest of the deer that you can seem to get patterns on? Just seemed like a freak thing to see a buck of that caliber on a very windy day(up there) and then just like nothing happened go right back to strolling thru the woods. Needless to say my buddy was upset, had he sat in his stand for maybe 5 more minutes, that buck probably would have walked right by his stand. Anyone else have experience with BIG bucks that just seem to go against the "normal" patterns and movements that we (think) we know about these animals?

Agreed. I shot a buck with my rifle 2 years ago, back kicked like a mule, ran about 20 yards, piled up dead....I hit him low, right through the heart.

Wrong place wrong time, out of range, etc etc. Closest I've had is a nice bodied spike buck come by me, not paying attention(so I thought), as he walked by the stand and looking away from me, I started to move in the stand and get ready....he took right off, I dont know if he heard my clothes on the stand seat, or what, but I was sure I didnt make any noise, but he took off without even looking at me. Maybe he winded me I dont know.
-
I've seen deer everytime I've gone out....Just wrong place wrong time for me I guess. I had a 4 pt come by me last week, and I was going to shoot if he walked into my left lane, and he then turned right, and walked straight away. Today I passed on a small spike buck, then an hour later I had another larger spike come by...at 15 yards even. He turned his head to look away from me, I started to turn and get lined up, and I must have made a noise or something, because he took right off. So far thats my season...no bloodtrails yet. Still more action than I saw from last season, so thats a plus.

A buddy I hunted with this morning saw 2 spikes and let them walk, I kicked up 2 doe while walking out, I cut down the hill into a creek bottom, and they were down there. I would have taken a shot, had they presented one, but they were never really in the open, always behind brush. Hopefully the weather tomorrow will be a little easier, the wind was pretty bad where we were.

When I took my pistol safety course, the instructor said that if you were going to carry a side arm while hiking or hunting, HE recommended a revolver, as the mechanisms are much more forgiving when it comes to getting dirty and being able to just work. Semis are much more touchy with more precission parts that can easily jamb if it were to get dirty. With that mind set, I'd go with just simple reliability in a revolver.

I have a prostaff on my .270. Great scope. I think I'll suffer with the fibers this season, and then I'll save my pennies for a Nikon Scope for the Muzz.

Nope on the bore sighting...I had 2 clean shots when I first took it back out that were 6" high...lets back up a bit...first shot was clean bore and cold....6" high at 100, and 1/2" right. Second shot dirty bore, warm barrel....6" low and 1/2" or so left. Third shot was a clean bore, and cool barrel, 6" high right next to the first shot. I started to move the scope accordingly and thats when I opened up a ball of wax. Last season BEFORE the scope mount incident, that thing would group under 2" groups out at 100 yards, with 3 shots (first clean, second and third, dirty). Then I'd clean the barrel to shoot again. Usually for quick cleans, I run a wet patch through to get the majority of it out, and dry patch it clean. For fouled really dirty barrel, I use the foaming bore cleaner and let it sit over night and then dry patch the hell out of it and finish it off with a light film of Bore Butter. Tonight after a proper cleaning, I removed the scope and put the fiber sights back on. I'll take it back to the range one of these evenings and see if I can get it back to some sort of normal shooting. I plan on starting at 50 yards, then out to 100. Who knows, maybe I'll like the open sights better.

Which Broadhead for low poundage draw weight?
loworange88 replied to wuggzwest's topic in Bow Hunting
Slick Trick Magnum 100 grain 4 blade short ferrule design, 1 1/8" cutting diameter. Punches a hole like a 12 ga. -
OH, I havent shot thru the sights yet, I'll have to remove the scope to put the irons back on. Hopefully this weekend I can get out with it after I do that. Thanks.

Hey Bubba, I'm using the same load as I have since I bought the gun. 777 pellets (100g) 295g Powerbelt hollow point, and 777 209 primer. The ONLY thing that would be "different" if you will, would be that my powder is 2 years old now. I have 25% of my powder left over, I wont buy more probably until I'm almost out, as I dont usually shoot my Muzzy as much as I would say my .22 or my Rifle. I'm not sure if "old" powder would cause that or not.

Hey everyone, I have an inexpensive Bushnell Scope on my Muzzy, and last season I had a loose scope mount and didnt realize it. So after a hand full of shots I finally found the culprit of why I couldnt hit the broad side of a barn. I tightened the scope mount, added loctite to all the screws, and went back to the range and shot it a few times, got it back on paper, but didnt really dial it in....Until Now. So it was 6" high with good windage at 100yards. After a dirty bore 2nd shot it was 6" low....I swabbed the barrel and again 6" high....I moved the scope down 24 clicks...1/4" at 100yards as indicated on the scope dials....Clean bore shot after adjust is 4 inches low decent windage. So I moved the crosshairs up, and now its gets weird, it shot lower and to the right, and as I tried to adjust it, it keeps getting worse. So I tried to go back the other way, why not...It continued to move out, so by the time I packed it up tonight, I was about a foot low, and about 3-4 inches right. I moved the xhairs in the opposite direction of POI, and it kept getting worse. On the flip side, I had my .270 with me tonight which has a Nikon Prostaff scope on it. At 100 yards it was about an inch low and an inch to the right, I followed the same procedure as I did with my Muzz, and with 6 shots, I have the rifle dead nuts at 100 yards. Never traveled outside the 2" bullseye mark with moving the scope the opposite direction as the POI. So with all that, I am concluding that my scope is damaged on the Muzz?!? I guess I will have to take the scope off and settle with the Iron sights for this season and buy a new quality scope for next season. Any one else ever have this type of experience with a scope?
