Any recommendations for hunting spots near rochester?
Caveman replied to jonny762's topic in General Hunting
Wow, I really wish I had read that first thread. Paula, stop being so anti-social by the way. -
In your experience, when is the best time to go around knocking on doors looking for permission? I have a buddy that consistently waits until right before the season opens and is surprised he's having doors slammed in his face. I've always made my rounds in the summer after the nightmares of recent trespassers have passed, but before every procrastinator and his mother is disturbing family dinner with a rifle in his hands.

Good luck man. In my experience hunters around here aren't too quick to help each other out with hunting spots. One the one hand I can see where they come from, gotta put in your own work. On the other hand, something as simple as pointing you to a state forest wouldn't be too hard. My advice, go on the www.dec.ny.gov, and run a quick search for state land. There's an "interactive mapper" that will show you state land around a specific area. -
I'll be using the Hawken I bought this summer all season

If what you're saying is that one side of the brain affects one side of the head and the other side of the body it's the same in humans. If you're having a stroke in your brainstem you will have paralysis on one side of your body and the other side of your face. Same idea

I was surprised by Paul Ryan's speech
Caveman replied to Deerthug's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Is it possible he failed to mention the 2nd amendment because in light of the recent shootings independent voters could be scared off? You have to remember, conservatives will vote conservative in November and liberals will vote liberal. Politicians are really competing for independent votes and those voters may have had their attitudes on gun control soured by the recent violence. -
Didn't say I wasn't voting. I said I WISH there was another choice. Haven't decided which dumbass I'd rather have running this country into the ground yet. That being said I wouldn't talk down to anyone for choosing not to vote. That's their right. Also, what was said was true, your vote does not count in this state. NY will always vote democrat, may not be ideal or make you feel all warm and fuzzy about the glory of the American political system, but it's reality.

Obama's way of thinking . . .
Caveman replied to Deerthug's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Am I the only one here who thinks BOTH sides have some very good and some very bad ideas. The biggest problem in american politics, perhaps society in general, is the tendency for people to assume they have all the answers and collaboration is of no use to them. -
Not a problem, if you read it that way I'm assuming others did too

Just a joke Doc, I meant I'm not a good enough hunter to have to worry about the ethics of killing things because I don't get the chance to kill them. Just a little self-depricating humor.

Funny I was looking for a house in WNY earlier this summer and I grew up in Depew (Cheektowaga actually but went to DHS) problem is the taxes are ridiculous when you can buy a $100,000 house in the city and pay half that in taxes.

I'd pay a lawyer $100 for 20 minutes of his time and have him advise you on the liability of things like barbed wire. Seems like your best option and I wouldn't discount it until you've spoken with someone who actually knows the law.

Is anyone else here not a good enough hunter to really be faced with this issue too often? lol

I was there Saturday around 11 am. I take a fishing trip up there with my father once a year (live in Buffalo) and if they're having the show that weekend I stop in. I originally was looking for a good deal on AR upper/lower separates but then I saw the Hawken. I've wanted one for a while and was originally holding out for a flintlock but this thing is cherry. Not a knick in the stock, no tarnish on the brass whatsoever and the bore looks like it's never been fired. 2 bills cash 'n carry I'll settle for the caplock.

Hey guys, just picked up a very lightly used caplock T/C Hawken at the Clayton gun show over the weekend. Wanted to stalk deer like it's 1830, you know, because hunting isn't hard enough. Problem is I've only ever used an inline and I need some help getting started. I think I'm going to start with 75 gr of Goex FFg powder w/ a patched round ball and move up in 5 gr increments until the group tightens up. But I have a few questions... Having only used pyrodex pellets in the past, loose powder is measured by volume correct? Also, are the patches used to patch the ball the same ones used to clean or are they different? Any other tips to avoid rookie mistakes?

Sobering reminder of the importance of muzzle control at all times

I personally find it hilarious at how hard people recoil at the PC thing. I don't see why it's such a big deal to people to absolutely NEED to say Merry Christmas. That being said, Merry Christmas everyone. Happy Hanukkah to the Jewish members. Happy Kwanza to anyone who may celebrate that. And if you're like me and don't feel the need to have any religious dealings, happy December 25th.

If you're drinking Genny light I'm less concerned with hunter safety and more worried about your taste in beer! lol

I have the BSA sweet 17 on my 17hmr. I heard a lot of great reviews of the sweet 22 while I was working in the lodge at Dick's. It's a good straight forward scope, just don't trust the adjustable barrel feature. There's a lot more involved in accuracy than just twisting an adjustment knob as I'm sure you know

A lot of guys use the FMJ's for predators when they'll be keeping the pelts since it punches a nice clean small hole and spares the skin for the most part.
-
I've already declared it predator season since I've just become disgusted with the weather for deer. I hunt them with the 17hmr though. Can't take the long shots but I can shoot the squirrels I see and still take some meat home.

Hunting coyotes with a 22,,Anyone
Caveman replied to RifleSharpShot's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Figure your average .22lr is 40 gr. I put them down last year with a 17hmr that runs 17 gr. I would trust a .22 -
Doc, it was decided in a case called Oliver v. US. The general rule is that the police do not need a warrant for private property made up of woods or fields because it is not subject to the same expectation of privacy as say a residence or office. I asked a man at college who is legal counsel for the NYSP how it applied to searches of hunting land and he confirmed that a warrant to search and surveil your private woods would not be subject to the warrant requirement. For anyone interested in a brief of the case http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/cgi-bin/getcase.pl?court=US&vol=466&invol=170 The way it is looked at in a constitutional sense is that your expectation of privacy diminishes with increased distance from your residence on that property. Again, this is straight from the guy who tells troopers what they can and can't do with respect to searches and got his J.D. at Notre Dame. If someone disagrees, take it up with him, I'm just the messenger lol
