I would try Indian Lake. bow hunting is tough in the dacks though. I only tried it once, got turned around and spent the night in the woods before stumbling across a nice old couple's house and hitched a ride to my truck over 5 miles away. Indian Lake will give you as good a chance as any but my advice is a good laminated map and compass if not a GPS.

Darwinism at it's best

You don't have to register a long gun at all in NY. It's perfectly legal even if you were taking ownership. Private party transactions of long guns are free from any gov't oversight here.

When does the season on trespassers open?

WNYbuckhunter, I think the problem isn't making a bad shot. I agree that if you hunt long enough everyone does. The ethical issue here is making an effort to only take high percentage shots. Having a deer 10 yards away broadside and having him jump the string is one thing. Taking a shot at an animal that is facing away from you and hoping maybe you'll just happen to thread the needle and shoot it directly up the a-hole, is another thing altogether.

I would print and laminate that response and stuff it in your pack...just in case an overzealous ECO disagrees.

I'm a noob to muzzleloading, last year was my first year with one and my first deer with one. I was wondering though do you think the pyrodex pellets I bought last year will still be good this year even though I didn't store it in a humidity controlled environment? Or am I going to have to buy a new supply?

As a hunter that disgusts me. I think a lot of people forget that we owe the animals we hunt a certain level of respect. Not to mention the negative publicity for hunters everywhere. We'll never change the anti's minds but behavior like this has the potential to make up the minds of a lot of the previously undecided public. Especially the "hunter" laughing in the background.

You never hear guys with big camps saying that lol

I had a buddy who was a full blooded card carrying Seneca and he told me the old timers when he was a kid used to build a smoky fire and hang their clothes in the smoke for a few hours. An old tribal method passed down from the days before scents and game laws and even white men I suppose. Apparently wood smoke is a natural anti-bacterial and not an alarm scent to deer. I can't confirm personally but he said those old guys were some of the most consistently successful hunters he had seen.

What do you use as base and outer layers during the COLD times?
Caveman replied to burmjohn's topic in General Hunting
I use regular long johns under a set of ECWCS (Extreme Cold weather Clothing System) I picked up at an army-navy surplus last year, under a sweat shirt and normal pants under my bibs and 3-in-1 parka. I usually sweat on the way in but once I'm sitting I'm comfortable no matter how cold it gets. -
When I was working at Dick's I was walking in the lodge and noticed a stanky smell like BO. Upon investigation I remembered that I was running late that morning and in my haste I forgot deodorant. That stank was me! In a panic I grabbed a bottle of Scent Killer and sprayed my pits in the back room. Instantly I could no longer smell myself. I went and bought a bottle for the following season. I was a believer after that lol.

Reminds me of a story from when I was working at Dick's. Customer comes in and asks me if we have timed feeders. I told her, "No, Dick's decided not to carry baiting supplies in NY stores because it's illegal to use here." Instead of "Ok thanks anyway," she got real defensive and screamed across the lodge, "Did I ask you about the law? Are you a cop? No you're just an idiot retail employee so just shut the **** up and answer questions!" Ordinarily I'd have been mad but I didn't even know how to react to this one before she stormed out lol.

Larry Weishuhn has a few books out. He's both an avid hunter and a whitetail biologist. I've heard good things about them though I've never read them.

We as americans need to get past our dependency on all fossil fuels both foreign and domestic. We're destroying millions of acres of land we can never get back and all for a source of energy that can never sustain us in the long run. America is clinging to fossil fields like a child clinging to his blanket. A series of windfarms in 4 midwestern states could supply the entire US with all the clean sustainable energy it needs. Thats a quote from a lecture I attended at the university of albany by Dr john Delano, one if the most highly respected geo-chemists in the country.

Not even close. I literally just got permission to hunt new property so i'm back at the beginning with aerial and topo maps. Hopefully doing some scouting next weekend and hanging stands the following week.

That is very true Eddie but you can pass some of the responsibility if you can say I called Officer ____ on whatever date and he told me this.

3 people 3 different answers. When I have questions about hunting regs I call an ECO and ask. There's an ECO roster in the back of the regs book. Pick one in your area and call they're usually more than happy to help out.

From what I understand you can hunt as close to the road as you want as long as you're not on the shoulder and your round doesn't cross the roadway. Just don't quote me.

I think that's a big part of why he was so generous. He's seen the way I take care of my own things and I keep in mind that I'm a guest on someone else's property. Offering to maintain his ATV trails and fell and split wood throughout the season probably didn't hurt either.

Anyone on here hunt or know anyone who hunts East Otto state forest in Catt county and can tell me if it's any good? Deer, turkey, bear, small game, doesn't matter. I'll be squirrel hunting there tomorrow so I'm curious about your experiences.

My suggestion is a Nikon Pro-staff. They're durable, the glass is Leupold quality, and IMO eye relief is important for a muzzleloader scope. In my experience that's where the Bushnell's fall behind. I worked in the lodge at Dick's for a year so I've handled most brands and talked to company reps. Just my $.02

I was going to suggest you see a doctor before I read the rest of your post lol

This will sound like bragging but I really just need to vent my excitement since my gf's tired of hearing about it. Last season I was hunting heavily pressured public land and working a job that made me work 6 hour days 6 days a week. Not a lot of time for hunting. This year not only did I take a job that has me working 4 days on 4 days off allowing me to go out 4 days a week every week if I wanted to, but my better half's uncle gave me permission to hunt his 100 acres in Catt county and when I mentioned bringing a tent up he told me he would make me a spare key for his "Cottage". Oh yeah, his "cottage" is actually a 2500 square foot log mansion complete with a game room and fully stocked bar. Not trying to brag but I'm giddy like a fat chick the quarterback just asked to prom.
