  1. I went from having 28 cam pics in one night before the snow storms to 3 pictures in 2 weeks now in the same spot.
  2. I haven't seen it yet. I wanted an idea of value before I saw it. It won't happen though. The guy isn't moving from $500 and I'm not overpaying. For $500 I can get a quality, used production rifle that hasn't been tweaked by a random guy with a hacksaw and a dremel.
  3. I'm not too concerned about resale value. I'm thinking more as a semi-unique deer rifle that I can pass on someday (and tinker with in the meantime). That being said, I don't want to overpay for a rifle when a Remington 700 bdl from the 1970s can be had for $600 in good condition. The gun I'm looking at, the guy wants $500 at the least. I was originally thinking $300 was a fair price if it was in good condition when I finally saw it, but I don't want to be that guy that lowballs someone and offends them if it turned out to be worth what he was asking. To get an idea about the condition of the gun, here's some pics. Is the consensus somewhere in the 200-250 range?
  4. How much would you pay for a sporterized Enfield 1917? Assuming it's a fairly average sporterization, you don't have a whole lot of info on who did the work, and there is a list of things you want to do (re-blue the metal, refinish the stock, pillar and glass bed the action and float the barrel). I know price varies a lot based on a whole bunch of things, but just ballpark how much you would pay. Oh, it's out of the Remington factory too. I know that matters.
  5. As a former 4 year varsity wrestler, that is quite an accomplishment. There is no other sport like it in my opinion. Congrats to a dedicated young man and his proud father.
  6. Don't care who wins, as long as it isn't New England.
  7. I do something similar, but I mix 2:1 ground venison to ground bacon ratio. Viola, instant venison bacon cheeseburgers.
  8. I took my 26 year old fiance deer hunting this year for the first time, and she was quiet as a church mouse. Of course, that's probably because she fell asleep in the first 5 minutes and slept through the whole hunt.
  9. Got a trail cam pick of 2 bucks crossing my parents' backyard together last week. Third deer in the pic too, but you could only see the back end.
  10. What Lawdaz said. Also, if you look at the area NYS has closed to hunting, in my area everything west of Rt. 78 (Transit Rd.) is off-limits no matter how far from houses and what township.
  11. My guess is you're going to need to give a lot more information than that. Many here also will be hesitant to give you an opinion without looking at the gun. When in doubt about a gun's safety, the best bet is always to have it inspected by a licensed gunsmith.
  12. I have a good sized 8 point that bedded in my front yard every night for a week straight in early november. This is right around the corner from UB North.
  13. It isn't any different down the road in Buffalo. Anything West of Rt 78 is off-limits in northern Erie County and that seems to be where I see all my deer.
  14. I think the biggest reason the Tacoma has stayed alive is because Toyota, for the most part, has a good reputation for reliability, and that results in a dedicated following. So if you want a Toyota truck your options become the Tacoma or the Tundra and the Tundra isn't a true 1/2 ton. It's a weird hybrid halfway between a 1/2 and 3/4 ton. It's too much truck for some so they slide down into the Tacoma. Also, the Tacoma is the only mid-size that can have a crew cab and not look dumb.
  15. The majority of people suck. The best way to get back at them is to not let it stop you from being a good person and helping people out when they're in need.
  16. I thought about this too. A lot of people here have made that argument that any willful lawbreaking is unethical. But what if you hit a deer and it's laying in the middle of the street with its back broken, clearly suffering? It's technically illegal to shoot a deer on or across a road. There are no cars coming in either direction and all available cops are out on calls and unavailable. I would consider it unethical to not break the law and dispatch it if I had the means. Some here would disagree Disclaimer for those who may feel the need to jump down my throat like so many here do: This situation was hypothetical. I have never been in this situation, nor have I shot on or across a road.
  17. I corrected your misstatement of the law. That's what it was; what you said was wrong. I'm not breaking the law, I'm following them as they are written. Not following laws that don't exist is not poaching. So anyway, I correct you so you're not giving out blatant misinformation, and from that you got that I break the law, bitch about gun laws and deer limits, and am personally responsible for the downfall of legal hunting as we know it? Dude, you're nuts! I'm not sure what meds they have you on, but make sure you're taking them as instructed.
  18. http://www.dec.ny.gov/regs/4081.html Scroll down to 190.8(w)(4). By the way, whatever has your panties in a knot and is causing you to feel like your hyper-aggressive response was necessary, address it on your own time. I'm correcting misinformation that others may read and believe. You said no stands on state land. You were wrong. If that hurts your delicate ego, find a more constructive way to deal with it. In the future, a simple, "huh, I didn't know that," or "sorry, I misspoke," will do just fine. Happy Thanksgiving.
  19. This needs to be changed to "certain" state land like state parks. You're legally allowed to leave tree stands on state forest land two weeks prior to the season and through the open season.
  20. I know the feeling. Around where I hunt there is a group of guys that jacklight bucks for two weeks prior to season and all during the season. I haven't reported them. The main reason is because I don't have a license plate, address, names, or an identifying information. I just know the field that I always see them in. Generally, I think a lot of it comes down to people either expecting someone else to do it, or figuring their call won't make a difference. Either way, I agree, we need to start policing ourselves better.
  21. I did that this round. I can't comment as to any difference in the end result since this was my first one, but I can say the fragrant mixture of boiling deer brain and citrus palmolive in the garage for two days earned me quite a tongue-lashing form the Mrs.
  22. This is why I'm proud to be from Buffalo. No rioting or looting when things get bad. Everyone bands together to help each other out. Back when I was working as an EMT in Buffalo I remember getting the ambulance stuck in the snow on a side street. We were in a real bad neighborhood. Out of nowhere five young men descended on the ambulance. I thought they wanted the drugs on board. Turns out they all had shovels and helped dig out the ambulance and dug us a path to get to the call location. I love this city. Thank you for helping us out. We couldn't have done it without people like you.
  23. Thanks for the head's up. This was my first one so I hopefully got the mistakes out of my system. I didn't flesh it at all prior to boiling. That was a mistake. It took almost 8 hours just to see bone. Next time I'm definitely fleshing as much as I can beforehand.
  24. I made this exact setup. It took a lot longer than 6 hours and I had to whiten the skull with hair bleach for 12 hours after, but the end result looks great. Thanks for sharing the idea.
  25. I see Steve Rinella use them a lot. I guess I always worried that it didn't have much of a backbone so how I treat my knives.
