  1. In my opinion a .30" at 650 isn't even close to being enough to regularly kill and recover a deer sized animal.
  2. My family and I own about 400acres and I am basically the only one that hunts it and I have only shot 1 deer on our land in the last 3 years in those the years I have killed 8 deer on public land. Does anyone else that owns land hunt mostly public land as well? I spend hundreds of dollars every year on food plots and see a lot of deer but rarely shoot any at home. I am the first to admit that I am way more "picky" on my land than I am on state land. Anyone else do something similar to this?
  3. Yup you must have missed it, or maybe I didn't make it clear. I hate to say this because I am usually against regulations but I think a .35" bore minimum or something like that should be imposed.
  4. Like I have been saying all along with proper bullet selection I see no reason why they wouldn't be effective at reasonable ranges.
  5. Have you not read anything I have said about this subject? It all started when vet brought up hollow points and I told him that there isn't a hollow point that with expand reliably and penetrate far enough at these slow speeds. Never once did I say that air guns couldn't do it. I was simply saying that at these slow velocities your choice of projectiles is very important just as it is with my wheel guns.
  6. I had time to watch the whole video now. I know these are a homemade bullet but it proved what I have been saying all along about hollow points at these speeds. The way that they are expanding with only gel is worrisome those bullets didn't have to go through hide let alone a bone and still only getting 14" of penetration isn't adequate in my opinion.
  7. I have been on this site and very few of his links worked and the few that did didn't show any numbers on velocities and what not. Do you know at what velocities the .45's are pushing those .255's ?I know in my 45 colts that a 255 hardcast Keith style bullet at 1100 fps will go end for end of little NC deer as I did it a few times with it down there and of the 7 deer I killed with that set up not one took a step.
  8. So you have no proof? I'm not against these at all what I am against is people using them and them not being effective at killing because of someone's ignorance. I have been doing research and have found very little on anyone using hp's for big game.
  9. Can someone show me a video or photos of a hollow point bullet from an air gun going through a rib and still getting 10-12" of penetration and I will take back what I said. There is a reason why most handgun hunters that Don't ant a lot of recoil that comes with th velocities use hard cast bullets. The energy that is used expanding a hollow point takes away from penetration.
  10. Like I said all along velocity and weight with hardcast is all the same! I would say that the 100+ years of handgun hunting experience with large bore slow movers is exactly what I would be leaning on for performance as to a weapon that has really been main stream for 10 years or so.
  11. Really? so because it's propelled by compressed air or gas it performs differently than a bullet propelled by an explosion? As a handgun hunter myself I think I have more experience with slow heavy projectiles than any airgunhunters in ny unless they travel a lot.
  12. That is incorrect a hard projectile with a large malplate tears huge holes. The velocities that these are shooting a hollow point should not even be considered!
  13. You guys is a broad statement doc, 2 or 3 pages ago I did bring up energy and then again last page. And I will repeat what I have said prior if one of these "air" guns can push a 250gn .40" or larger slug at at least 900fps at the muzzle. That would be plenty to get through about any critter on North America. Just read a little about Elmer Keith if you don't believe it. It doesn't matter what puts the slug into motion as long as it gets the needed weight to the nessesary velocity it will perform the same. I couldn't care less about a big game air gun but if they will kill deer who cares no different than a crossbow. Actually if these are going in gun season it's less of a matter than crossbows because I don't think anyone could argue that one of these are more effective than a shotgun or rifle.
  14. This is completely wrong Doc a 300win mag with nearly 4000 ft lbs of energy with the wrong bullet that doesn't expand or hit major bone doesn't do much damage to an animal at all. Take a 250gn .45 cal hard cast Bullet with a +or- .40 malplate at 1000 fps will be a lot more efficient and effective even at around 3000ftlbs less.Energy is only part of effectiveness. With slow moving projectiles you want a large permanent wound channel to create mass hemorrhaging. As for the effectiveness of a 410 it has nothing to do so with enery it has to do with bullet construction if a company made a sabbot for a 410 it would be an excellent deer cartride. A .35 cal 180gn bullet at around 1500fps would be an excellent deer cartridge oh wait ever heard of a 357 maximum?
  15. I guess if your comparing it to a field point maybe. A bow kill by blood loss not much bloodloss with a .30 hole. Like I said I have no problem with the big bore air guns but a 30 cal at 600fps isn't ebough.
  16. So because they are quite makes them okay to wound animals?? I'm all about new stuff but a 30cal projectile at those speeds are insufficient to regularly kill and RECOVER a deer sized animal!
  17. I have never measured myself but I have cut almost all my stocks and re glasses them or refinished for the wood ones.
  18. I own a 300 b o and my 220gn subsonic load at 900ish fps they were VERY unimpressive on the 2 hogs I killed with it that I would never shoot another animal with them. Completely inadequate in my opinion with my experience and research. I can only hope NY does not make them legal. I would think that a .40 diameter or larger 200+ gn projectile at 1000+ fps would be adequate with a solid bullet.
  19. No I haven't heard of this as a problem with them. And the weather masters were made before remingtons QC down slide.
