  1. Ok so getting ready to head out, I just did a pack dump of exactly what was in it from my last day of hunting the big woods. Here’s my list. Folding saw Life straw Spare batteries AA&AAA Spare wool socks and gloves Compass Zip ties Head lamp Electrical tape Candy bar Cliff bar 20’ of 550 cord Lighter Matches Medical kit “the basics, bandaids, bandages, burn cream, antibiotic ointment, iodine, water germicidal tablets, medical tape, etc” Fire starters 2 50gal trash bags Foam ass pad Pens 2 sandwich baggies Small folding knife in pocket Outdoor edge folding knife Small flashlight Head lamp I usually have a leatherman multitool but I must have lost it this deer season. For clothes I’ll be wearing my normal wool pants and wool shirts, Merino wool base layer, smart wool socks, neck gater, merino wool gloves and lacrosse burly boots, my pack is a mystery ranch pop up 18, I doubt I’ll use this pack again next year but it’s what I used this year so I’ll use it today. I’m going to carry a 22lr Henry carbine instead of a deer rifle for obvious reasons, I considered a shotgun but thought the 22 would be a lot more realistic, should I find some small game. I don’t carry a pistol when gun hunting but will for this quick trip, it’s a Taurus TX22. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Sure is easy isn’t it? Have you tried a battery terminal cleaner for your breech plug and threads? When you run them dry it’s literally a 5 second job to clean them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Brake cleaner or ether takes it right off. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. I’ve done this before but not in a while and I feel like my “survival” kit that I carry in my pack keeps getting smaller and smaller I keep taking out things I won’t need. When I was 16 or 17 I got lost hunting in the Adirondacks and spent a night. I had a lighter and that was it. It was around 10 degrees that night and it was miserable. After that I started carrying a bunch more stuff but have whittled that down a lot over the years. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. I’ll definitely take some pics for you guys. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Nothing on the agenda tomorrow, boat ramp is pretty snowed in and I’m tired of driving a couple hours to ice fish so tomorrow I’m going to head in the woods with only the the stuff a carry in my pack when hunting. Probably only stay out for 24hrs. I’ve done this a few times before. It’s never much fun but it’s given me the confidence that I could survive should I get lost or injured when I’m hunting the ADK’s. Anyone else ever done this before? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. As soon as I think I have a bird coming to my calls I move 20yds left or right of where I called from. I always try not to call again unless I think I he’s lost interest. Too many times I’ve gotten spotted by birds before I see them. It would be unbelievable to think a turkey can know what tree you were at when you called from a couple hundred yards but I’ve saw it too many times to not be a believer! 8. I don’t use anything. I don’t store my muzzleloaders with the breech plug in them unless it’s loaded. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. I would like to wait to get my pension but staying gets harder and harder every day! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. The job, obviously. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. My success in the ADK’s has very little to do with calling and a lot more to do with a locating call and closing distance. Probably half of my big woods birds I don’t think I ever made a turkey noise between the ADK’s, northern Vermont and Maine. I do a very loud owl hoot with my mouth. I find big woods birds that aren’t pressured to be much more likely to shock gobble. I’m no help on the box call argument, I haven’t carried one in the woods in over 15 years, only call I carry is a couple custom diaphragms. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. I’ve tested positive for the Rona twice a couple months apart, it was no big deal at all. I’ve had hangovers that were much worse. My job makes it nearly impossible to avoid exposure. There’s a zero percent chance I’ll get the shot, if my employer makes it mandatory I’ll probably be moving out of NY. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. I always say that I’m going to buy a wind turbine because if I mention the word fishing you can expect Gail! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. Depends on the style of fishing and conditions, my last boat had a 24v terova with 2 group 29’s and could only get 3-4 hours or so with just the trolling motor at 2.5ish MPH. Trolling for eyes slower without down riggers and dipseys and the other junk lines a bow mount is the only way to go! Using a kicker with steering locker with terova for steering it will last days. I do the same with my current boat unless it’s real windy/rough then I have to steer with kicker. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. If you’re not planning on going with a kicker and don’t plan on doing any water sports a bit underpowered can be a good thing! It’s a lot easier to go up to 2mph than go from 3mph to2mph! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. 400hrs on a 4stroke is nothing depending on the 400hrs. Nice thing about newer motors is there’s no lying, plug it into computer and it will show you what rpms the hours were put on if 350 of those hours were put on over 5000 rpms it would be a bit concerning. That’s a smaller motor for that rig so to get up to 30mph it’s probably up there in the R’s. It all depends on how it was used and by who. I plan on having my boat for a long long time but I would be asking some questions if I was buying my boat used today. It’s 2 years old has just shy of 200hrs on the main motor and probably 95% of those hours are at 52-5400 rpms that works out to 50mph on my rig. On my home lake I regularly make 10-20 mile runs one way. I live 15 minutes from the launch at the south end of the lake and it’s faster for me to run the boat up the lake than it is to trailer it. 17. Get a couple miles from the road and there’s very little pressure! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  18. The factory tracks that they all have now are ok for rod holders but I’ve seen more than a couple bent and ruined from downriggers. In my opinion if you’re going to run riggers you want a wide enough gunwale to mount them too. I have 6ft berts tracks mounted on top of gunwale and wouldn’t mount them or rod trees any other way. My buddy has his riggers mounted on tracks that are mounted to the lund track but he has 4 of the lund track mounts to spread out the load and it still has more give than I’m comfortable with. 19. Unless I end up buying a lake O specific big boat I don’t think I’ll ever own another boat with a windshield! Other than weather protection I haven’t found a category that a wheel boat is superior to the tiller for my styles of fishing. Being able to run 3 down riggers and watch 6 junk lines without ever turning around is amazing! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Yes just much deeper and wider than a Alaskan. It’s 100” wide with 30” interior depth. Fish lake George, Champlain, the hudson and Lake Ontario mainly with a bunch of smaller lakes mixed in. Other than the occasional cat fishing or bass trip I troll for salmon and trout. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. I got mine through my local Starcraft dealer, they were not a listed smoker dealer. It’s by far my favorite boat but it’s also my dream style boat it’s a 20ft tiller with a 150hp. The think is a trolling machine!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. I honestly can’t complain about 2020. It was a weird year for sure! I’ve had COVID twice but no big deal either time, I’ve had hang overs that were much worse. I also made a little over $80,000 in OT from covid so it was more than worth it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. I’ve owned 4 Starcrafts and own a smoker craft “owned by Starcraft.” I’ve had zero complaints about quality or workmanship. My 2 fishing buddies have a 18ft Lund and a 18ft alumacraft, I don’t like mercury so I wouldn’t own a a lund but the boat rides well. The alumacraft is a nice boat as well. Only brand I would avoid is trackers. Both of them had trackers before their current boats and in my opinion they were both junk! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
