I'm impressed that you see these things inside the logs you choose. Like Grampy said, most people see firewood. It takes a special heart and a special talent to see beyond that. Release the bear, release the eagle, release the hounds and do it in your underwear if it works. Be careful with the chainsaw. Very cool stuff, my friend!

I would argue that it's still state of the art. When you can pull a gun out of the swamp muck, tip the barrel down for drainage, and then snap it up to shoot a duck, it's a pretty darn good gun.

I used to take a truckload of guns to the range for sight-in every couple of weeks for my gunsmith friend. There was nothing that stopped me from doing my job, but a stack of Ithaca 37's always tightened things up a bit. My buddy shot a Rem 1100 and asked why I didn't want to play with the Ithaca beyond the necessary sight-in. I handed it to him and he touched one off. He was a Navy guy who had fired 16" cannons from a battleship, and he said , "WOW." The sight-in and practice at the bench might bruise you up a little, but you'll never remember any of it when the deer is on the ground. It's a great gun and about as solid and reliable as anything ever made. A friend carried one in Viet Nam in the late 60's because it worked. Always. Just sayin'.

Bump! I hope this goes to a good home. Someone with a stout shoulder and stout heart. Step up you young guys! It really doesn't hurt that bad...

If you push it too quickly you'll mess up all the repair work. It gets much worse as you grow older, too. If your Doc says to start with 15 or 20# of rubber tubing for rehab, don't immediately jump to 30#. It won't help.

Very nice Larry!. Mine is a bit earlier and has the 'rat-tail' fore stock. It's also spent time in the swamp mud and fallen out of a few tree stands. It's not near as purty as yours.

There really shouldn't be any grey area in the issuance of permits, but it depends on the politics of the particular judge that makes it a grey area, and whether or not they want to uphold the U.S. Constitution. My permit was issued in 1981 in Wayne county and says: "LICENSE TO CARRY PISTOL IS HEREBY GRANTED.". I haven't met a lawyer, judge, or LEO who thinks that statement is somehow restricted by certain conditions. My permit also states very clearly that it is not valid in NYC. I've never been to NYC so I don't care what their rules are.

...of course sitting in a restaurant full of strangers there's bound to be someone in the room you/I wouldn't like.

It's curious. I recently sat down and had dinner with five great guys from this web site for two hours, and a wife and a daughter of one of those guys were there. The guys are all about my age and while we chatted about a bunch of things not one of them ever asked if I was carrying. It's just a weird question to ask someone. Right up there with, "Are you wearing briefs or boxers tonight?." From me, you'll get the same look and walkaway to either question.

Just power on through it BigVal. My house in buffalo was burglarized and everything with an electrical cord was taken except my coffee bean grinder.(not sure why they left that) The only thing they stole after trashing my reloading bench was the 20$ Lee beam scale. They left several thousand dollars worth of reloading dies behind on the floor and took a 20$ scale? Hmmmm, wonder what they were thinking.

Irish Spring bar soap as deer repellent
philoshop replied to LET EM GROW's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
My dad hangs chunks of Irish Spring from his peach tree. Seems to work. -
Cultural Marxism. A snowman can not be JUST a snowman, or SIMPLY a snowman. It cannot be interpreted for what it actually is, but must be interpreted as something to be demonized by the leftists. I was told this very early on in college; that everything must be interpreted in various ways for Leftist control. I was in Architecture school and for one of the exercises I assembled a bunch of geometric figures I had built. Square, rectangle, rhombus, etc. They were all made of foam-core (very light) and painted the same color with quotes written on them from Marx, Stalin, Churchill, Reagan, Thatcher... Except that one was solid plaster and weighed about ten pounds. The professors gave me some crap for a while, but I pointed out that all these things were not the same, or even similar in many ways, and that trying to pigeon-hole them all didn't work. The Leftist/Communist professor ended up hiring me to help with work on his doctoral dissertation. My job was to poke holes in his theories. I was pretty good at it. Leftist thoughts don't actually work in real life. That's not a stunner for anyone with a brain.

BigVal, if you have any pics of the gear somebody might recognize something on CL or in a pawn shop. Just a thought.

I'll send your wallet back tomorrow Pygmy. Hehehe... I just don't understand how people can think it's okay to steal from others. Then again, we may be on the verge of having a Congress who thinks that's entirely acceptable and appropriate. And I'm called "deplorable" for not agreeing with that.

I truly dislike the kind of people who would do that. It's just wrong. I hope you can get at least some of your stuff back. Craigslist is a good place to look. There's an entire section on stolen gear on the arborist site I frequent. A couple guys stop for lunch and all their saws, trimmers and gear are gone? What kind of filthy animal would do that? I'd prefer being physically attacked and robbed at gunpoint rather than have my tools disappear. Again, I hope you can get some of your stuff back.

I forgot to mention that their wine is also very good. World renowned actually. I'm not much of wine enthusiast, but when I get the urge they're closer than the liquor store. And the Garlic Festival is heaven for an old Italian guy like me. Maybe I'll see you there.
-
Turns out that it's just Firefox. Went to Internet Explorer and got my sound back. I'm looking into why that would happen.

I might set one up at Vonnie's Boathouse for the fall. We can all pick on the wine tour folks (winers) and leaf peepers who stop in. They can be incredibly annoying. This weekend is the Garlic Fest at Fox Run. Just a short drive south of Geneva. The great thing about the Garlic Fest is that you don't have to worry about garlic breath. Everyone has it! Mild, medium, hot-n-spicy, little clumps of goodness.

It was a good group GTG all around. Except for that hot dog fight instigator! Just kidding TF, love ya my friend. My freezer is stocked with Zweigles due to a half-price sale at Tops. I even had to cash in a bunch of empties to stock up.
-
Uh oh, the hot dog wars are going to heat back up.
-
TF, it's pretty cool that your daughter got herself in the shot through the mirror behind us.
-
We'll do another one soon. Maybe a lunchtime event so folks who have to work early can make it. I really enjoyed meeting you all.
-
We had a good time. TF's daughter took a pic that will be up later I'm sure. Seems that the boat guys all had some mechanical issues and were no-shows. But those of us in attendance were happy.

Great saw Wooly. Stick with the Stihl mix oil and non-ethanol gas. I have the 180 and the only difference is a steel bucking spur rather than plastic. Won't be an issue for you. There are some pretty cool specialty bars and chains made for that little saw. Enjoy!

Interesting stories Nomad. I never used the Creekside range, and never hunted near it. So I don't know what actually happened other than that they closed. It was my favorite gun shop. Beikirchs was always close by when I was working in the city.
