I often wonder where the misconception comes that having a healthy/balanced herd equates to less opportunity to fill your freezer. My only conclusion is that a lot of it comes from people having almost no experience any place else and they have nothing to compare it to. Hence they make faulty assumptions. Where in fact the exact opposite is true. With better management you could have more opportunity, better quality and higher hunter satisfaction.

Again, based on efficacy they have do not belong in an archery season.
-
Sounds like i know what it takes to have a healthily deer herd and good hunting for everyone. Considering my friends and neighbors hunt on my lands more then I do, I am far from greedy. If was really selfish, considering I deer hunt out of NY more then in NY then I wouldn’t say …I don’t give shit and NY can continue its drain circle
-
Probably no statically significant difference considering the average NY hunters indifference to laws.
-
Thanks for the honest answer. At one time I was very much enthralled in NY hunting, luckily very early on I had the opportunity to go bowhunt other places. Those experiences have shown me that there are better ways to manage whitetails then what takes place in NY, and offer a hunter a chance and a better experience.

How does NY deer hunting experiences compare to other places you have hunted?
-
What you seem to not understand is that in wildlife management, Efficacy (success ) is inverse to opportunity. That is the sole the difference between season lengths and the implements used. It’s really not that hard a concept, in fact it’s pretty well an established by every state and province that followed the North American model of conservation. NYs season structure is antiquated and mires us into having mediocre hunting at best. However more to the point it’s detrimental to the deer herd.
-
if you actually read and just tried to comprehend what what I have written, you would see that I have stated ad nauseam that NY should only allow buck per licensed hunter regardless of the weapon or season. So what argument next are you planning on miss stating?
-
I must know all the elite Hunters because it’s pretty common for people I know to fill to both Buck tag. In fact if you’re not picky and you don’t care what dinks you shoot if you can’t fill to Buck tags in New York State you should quit hunting and take up golf. I do agree that the rut should not be during the regular season they should start a week later and cut the season in about half
-
Thanks I will pass on that one. My answer wouldn’t be “fair “ to you.
-
Could have fooled me.
-
Are you really that ignorant?
-
You can’t discuss season lengths without speaking too weapon type, it effectiveness and hunter density per square mile. Unless your trying to be either disingenuous or just ignorant
-
It’s a crazy concept I know however one just might have to consider the overall health of a deer herd. Managing dear Is about managing people to. And having a close to a 30 day rifle season in a state that has some of the highest hunter densities in the country is not good management.

I am fortunate that have and continue to hunt many places, Ohio included. Experiencing other places is a great thing, it opens you mind and gives you something to compare to. After many such experiences it’s easy to conclude that NY seasons and management is piss poor.
-
It’s been consistently lowered, and will be lowered even more into the future as long as the efficacy of bow season continues.
-
When you compare days available for hunting compared to deer harvested, and factor in the amount of olicense hunters. Well then we again are near the bottom of the barrel. Our season structure is ass backward both in increasing quality and reducing the population. For example going to one buck would definitely add more value and use to our DMP program. If they wanted to decrease the overall population that’s should be the direction instead.
-
Because the increased efficacy of the crossbows coupled with liberal season lengths are already being discussed in many states that allowed them land they are concluding that it isn’t sustainable long term. Take a look at Ohio slashing antlerless tags in high participation areas, Kansas lowering quotas Ect …there are many examples
-
Agree the NY season dates and lengths are some of the absolute worst in the county. This is piss poor idea to begin with however it still should be left up to the DEC in all their stupidity. NY should go to state wide Regular season that starts the first Saturday after thanksgiving and goes for 10-12 days. They should then have state wide muzzleloader season that is 5 days starting the first Saturday in Jan. One buck per license hunter per year. Archery season without cross bows Oct 1 to Jan 31st. Liberal antlerless tags that are person and DMZ specific. Sound like Ohio minus the crossbows ? Yep…

Is there such thing as "Day Beds" vs "Nightime Beds"
Trial153 replied to Northcountryman's topic in Deer Hunting
Absolutely agree with that premise. -
No more like Veal.

Lots of people bitch about how we need be giving local governments more control vs state and federal government..until that is they don’t like their decisions. Personally I feel that both the decision by the county is an error and furthermore allowing local jurisdictions to make wildlife management decisions is an error as well. The DEC should establish the seasons period, even though I feel they do a piss poor job in NY it’s still the responsibility of the department and not local politicians
