Just curious but what do you mean when you say the roots are trained? -

Saw a flock of turkeys and I passed on a shed buck. Just before sunset I had 3 does come out but had no shot. That’s it for me with the bow, but it’s not over yet. Still 5 days to go and if I get done from work early one day, I plan on sitting in another spot down the road with the gun. -

I’m sitting in a ground blind for what is probably my last bow hunt for the season. It’s a bit warmer than I’d like for the end of January at 44* but I’ll take it. -
I agree 100%. I’ve seen it firsthand and even still get pics of fawns with spots in January. Even though some people might say it’s from inbreeding, it’s not. It’s about too many does and not enough bucks. I thought the second video was pretty funny and I’d thought that I’d share.

I got this video last night. It appears to be a buck trailing a doe. Then I got another video this morning. The buck sure looks like he lost his girlfriend. He’s a bit out of breath and a little disoriented. He even has a cattail stuck in his rack. Lol.

Well they only killed 25 deer in the cull last year. Ineffective I’m sure, considering the amount of deer in the area. There are some areas very close by to hunt, if you know where to look. And I guarantee that when you’re in a tree stand in their environment, they will not be so fearless.

I used to hunt not far from there years ago on private property. Didn’t they have the USDA do a cull on that estate last year.

I’ll be heading out this afternoon. Supposed to start snowing around 3. -
Keep the swamp as a sanctuary and hunt the edges of it.

And he’ll be even bigger next year! Judging from his body size and knowing what’s around, I put him at 3.5 at the most. He has a lot of potential. The only way to harvest mature bucks consistently is to let the young boys walk. -
Feeding deer is illegal...unless your local government says it’s ok and tells you to shoot every deer you see over corn in February and March. True story.

I skipped out of work early today and jumped into my ground blind. Unfortunately I’m out of buck tags and wouldn’t you know it, I had a young 10 pt come by a little after 4. Sorry to disappoint Biz. He would’ve got a pass anyway. He needs another year or 2. I’m strictly hunting does now. I’ll be out again this weekend. -
Looks like a Lone Wolf Assault.

I’d offer you my place, but the wife is ready to give me the boot come January. Inviting more people would just make it worse for me. Lol. A friend of mine is an outfitter with a lodge close by that hunts everything from upland to waterfowl and deer. Another option is to put in for the January lottery for state land with the gun. There are plenty of opportunities all season long here. -

You are a small percentage of the hunting population. Taking more does are in our best interests. It also creates a more intense rut. Personally I think that a 4 month season is long enough. We just need to get the majority of hunters to do their part and giving them an incentive was a proven way to do it. -

Exactly. For as long as I can remember, there was an incentive to shoot does. Almost everyone that I know would fill their doe tags and then receive either sex bonus tags, but very few would actually ever use them as a buck tag. It was a great incentive to keep people in the woods as well for the entire season. A lot of guys now will fill their buck tags then pack it in. -

There was no increase in the doe harvest the one year they did that. It just kept a lot of guys out of the woods for 2 weeks. Hunting into February isn’t going to make a huge difference either. Bow hunting participation drops off sharply after November. And becomes almost nonexistent in January. Sure there is a gun season as well in January, but the deer know where to go after being pressured for 4 months. There are many more places to bow hunt compared to using the gun. -

The thing that felt weird for me was to have 60* temps in January. Even with a 4 month season here, the population is still growing. There are deer in locations that even 10 years ago, you would have never in your wildest dreams thought possible. DEC really needs to bring back the bonus tags that allowed you to shoot a deer of either sex after shooting a doe. Many people would shoot 2 does right out of the gate to get another either sex tag. The incentive is no longer there for people to shoot does and it’s showing. -

Saw 6 does tonight just out of range of my bow. As I was leaving I saw 3 more in the field across the road where I can use the gun. If I get done early one day this week from work, I’ll sit for last light with the gun. -

Sitting in my ground blind tonight for my warmest sit of the year looking for some does. Normally I wouldn’t bother with these temps but I had several does moving here last night hoping for a repeat tonight and the clock is starting to wind down. -
A friend of mine got this video of a buck last month. I thought it was pretty funny how he couldn’t decide what he wanted to do, so I thought that I would share. It was the start of the second rut here. He didn’t shed yet, but one side was broken off. I believe that there was a hot doe with a much bigger buck nearby. Probably the one that whopped his ass, yet he still wanted to pursue the doe. You can see another buck in the background keeping his distance.
