Looks like the first real giant of the season has fallen
sampotter replied to phade's topic in Deer Hunting
It doesn't work, that's all I'll say.... -
They are really easy to use- just make sure you follow the directions and keep an eye open for any contact points between the press cable and your bow. I stick my bow in a benchtop vise with a leather glove to keep from scratching the riser and then go to town with the Bowmaster. My only regret is not buying one 8 years ago when I 1st started bowhunting...

Believing that a "special diet" will cause a buck to grow a nontypical rack is like believing a "special supplement" will increase the size of your manhood. Genetics come 1st. Good nutrition allow genetics to be expressed. A "special diet" lets those intensively bred bucks show what they're made of. I agree that there are grotesque bucks behind fences all over the country and yes, they have been fed some very expensive feed. But- if a buck that only has genetics to be a 6pt is fed the same diet he is only going to be a 6pt, just maybe a lot bigger than if he was in the wild. Remember- there were 300" nontpicals and 200" typicals being killed WAY before any of the high fence stuff started... -
I'd be even harder to find when you needed something done...

Some bucks (one nice one), coyotes, and a big 'ole bobcat! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WE_gBxsh6yE&feature=youtu.be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Do_xkhMCh_g&feature=youtu.be http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knEr5OgfhKI&feature=youtu.be

That's a big mature buck right there!

You really ought to get your rear end down there. I'm pretty sure Phade has had a good time hunting Ohio and I know I sure did when I went for the 1st time last year. What county is your buddy in?

I bought one of these last week along with a new string and cable for my bow. Works as good or better than advertised. I wish it hadn't taken me so long to get one... I'm done with being frustrated with pro shops! It seemed like I always ran into problems when I wanted to get something done to my bow- *Newbie guys at BPS didn't split the cable to attach the drop away rest rope, so eventually the rope didn't have enough tension to trigger the rest. *Had my bow sitting in a shop for 2 weeks waiting for the guy to put new limbs on it even though he had them in stock (this was during hunting season) *The only reputable place near me doesn't seem to have set hours so I have to drive 30 minutes to drop the bow off and do it again to pick it up. No more of that fooling around for me! Plus I won't have to delay replacing or repairing anything on my bow.

One of the nicer bucks from this season...

He wouldn't pass him up. -
I think it's perfect and funny that he didn't- brought out the a^^ in a few people in a hurry, didn't it? It's not as though it says New Jersey under his user name or anything, does it?

If you could somehow hold off on shooting that deer he could really turn into something special. He's only 2 and could be ridiculous looking if he had another 2-3 years to grow up. Pretty cool deer.

125ish and definitely older than 2.5

Bleach cleans it up but it continues to eat away at the bone long after it has been rinsed and dried. Peroxide is the safest and can be just as effective.
-
That's impressive. The footage. And the way that arrow sliced through like a hot knife through butter. You're a lethal weapon.
-
That makes it clear that I don't want to do my own! Geez, what tedious work. A taxidermist truly is an artist.
-
Both, a hair bleach kit works best but would be expensive for just 1 skull.

Whoever sells that "special diet" must be getting rich. Trust me-there is no "special diet" that makes deer grow non-typical points. Freakishly large racks, yes, but non-typical racks like the ones we are talking about start with genetics 1st. Those monster farmed deer have pedigrees that rival your Bluetick coonhound's. I'm not saying that penned deer don't escape or that morons never try to pull a fast one like the guy in Watertown, but I'm not going to agree that every time I see a big non-typical that it should be assumed to have been farm raised. The natural feed and genetics are out there. -
Are cellular trail cams worth it?

You're kidding right? I hope you don't truly believe this? -

P.S. Before anyone freaks out- this is Connecticut. -

Here's a yearling doe yesterday evening, a couple minutes before I shot her. I forgot that she walked by the camera until I looked at my phone once I got out of the tree. I was 30 yards beyond the stone wall in the right side of the picture. This camera had sent me ~500 pictures since 8/24. Most in the last 2 weeks after the acorns started dropping... -
12/13- The question of what triggers the rut is bogus! Does in estrus are the final trigger of the rut, not photoperiod. You can have short days but if there aren't any estrus does then you have no rut. Plus having more than one possible correct answer is a crock, or is that why I didn't do better on my SATs years ago?

I thought this had been validated with fetal aging?

I'm not quite Magic Mike material at the moment... That would be a good way to support my hunting habit though!
