  1. Grow- no need to apologize- just get the job done and get us the details!
  2. Yes. It would be great to see another angle but from this pic I think he's at least 4. Rack wise, he has great brows but looks like maybe a lopsided 9. He has a decent frame. I think the 125-130 estimates are reasonable except those brow tines will add 6-8 extra inches. Because of that I think he could be 140ish. If both sides matched the left he could be 145-150. Based on this pic I'd shoot him without a doubt unless I got another pic that tells a different story...
  3. I think it would be fun to hook up an electric fence energizer to the bottom pegs or rungs of a treestand....
  4. The tree is dead, so not a porcupine. Most likely a woodpecker.
  5. This was when Alsheimer predicted the most activity for last season... I didn't see as much activity then as I'd hoped but Sandy came blowing in right in the middle of it. I'm banking on the very end of bow season/ beginning of gun being the hot time...
  6. This is my thought too. Most fat is deposited on a deer's back with the majority on the rump. I can't remember finding fat on a deer's neck. There would likely be some fat in the brisket area. Was the hair short, dark and coarse (brisket) or long and slightly crimped (back)? Either way it sounds like you hit the deer really high or low and is a non-fatal wound.
  7. Haha- I'm not sure what a bug NT is. I don't know where you could do a DNA test but I bet one of the colleges that have deer programs would know. They might be able to use it in a study. First things first though- get him on the ground!
  8. If you get him it would be really interesting to do a DNA test. Very similar but then again, Long Island's deer population is isolated genetically from the mainland more or less. A lot of bug NTs have come out of there in the last few years, yours included. No matter what, the deer you have on camera is a big boy for sure. Good luck. I want to see close ups and more angles...
  9. Don't be afraid to bone it out and carry it back to the truck...
  10. Not entirely true. The land is "Forever Wild", meaning no logging now that the state owns it. But, that doesn't mean that a previous owner didn't log it. I've been on state land in the Adks that had easy to follow logging roads. Some was logged as recently as the 90's. I can't say I'm familiar with any state land in Inlet though.
  11. Beech nuts should be dropping soon. Look for terrain features like saddles and benches. Old skid trails are good places to find scrapes.
  12. Don't you guys know- that is what yearling spikes grow up to be....
  13. Probably not what you consider cheap but I shoot a Ripcord and am happy with it. Be sure to get one that still gives you full containment.
  14. Well, sure but everyone else is talking pure accuracy: how well a gun can group bullets not what the trajectory is. A 50 BMG will be more accurate than your 300 at 1000 meters but accuracy has a lot less to do with caliber than the specific gun. Even 2 of the same caliber guns made by the best custom gunsmith will have accuracy differences. Heck, even the same gun with a newer barrel will shoot more accurately. On top of that- different ammunition through the same barrel be more accurate than others.
  15. Never heard any complaining... Plus the more cows eat the more milk they make!
  16. Every year when chopping corn our crop crew finds it. It's never a matter of if, just where is it going to be this year. Funny thing is it always seems to go through the chopper and the pothead never gets to harvest it. You'd think that when you see all the silage trucks rolling it would be a tip that you needed to go get your stuff...
  17. I think you legally could have shot it in the dark with use of a light.
  18. I shoot a 280 Remington and love it.
  19. Not so for me. I have plenty of exclusive access around me. Last week I was invited to hunt a 4500 acre ranch in Kansas along with about the same in Montana without even asking for it, I just mentioned that this time of year I get a little distracted by hunting. In fact, I could hunt every major whitetail state without paying for anything more than my license, travel, and food (sometimes). Guess being a dairy farmer isn't so bad after all... except not having the time to take advantage of the opportunities...
  20. I don't let hangnails keep me from the woods...
  21. Actually, if done properly it is a lot less messy than if you did gut it. Dang it, now I'm going to have to do a video.
