  1. Knocked down an awesome Tom on the opener! 22 lbs, 10 inch beard and 1 1/4 inch spurs. Came in with a smaller Tom and roughed up my jake decoy good so I had to let him have it at 15 yards. Unfortunatley I didn't have anyone with me at the camp so I couldnt get great pictures but it was an awesome birthday present lol
  2. Agree, as much as hens piss me off in the spring they are absolutely necessary. My property for instance, I have 3 different all hen flocks of 15- 20 birds each that pass by my deer sets in the fall. Last spring I had, no exaggeration 7 different jakes, a countless number of fired up two year olds and a few old guys I couldn't get into range. This fall all three of my hen flocks had at least two new jakes mixed in each and I had a flock of 18 males 9 of which had 10+ inch beards. My buddy hunted opening day with me and told me about them, I wouldn't have believed it but I saw them for myself the next week. They can be a major pain but the more hens you have the better off you are in my opinion.
  3. Seems to be coming back in Putnam, but the numbers in Schoharie county on my property last spring and this past deer season were insane. Should be good again this year.
  4. I put another vote for the baronette blinds. I bought a big cat 350 and it's awesome. Granted I'm only 5'7 but I have atleast another 6-12 inches of standing room above me. Amazon is selling them for 146 currently.
  5. I never shot the 2 inch hypos, a few of my buddies tried them and had poor penetration with them due to the blade angle I would guess. They all draw between 27-29 inches and 70 lbs. I did pick up a few of the hypo +P 1.5 cut in a trade last year and those work awesome. Much better blade angle and a strong head. I miss judged distance and sent one into the ground. After inspecting the head I spun the arrow, touched up the blade and killed with it the next day. 25 yards blew threw both shoulder blades on a 2 year old buck and dropped it within 30 yards. I'll be using them again
  6. I have a 2016 Athens Ace I would like to sell. Awesome shooting, easy drawing, light bow. New vista black camo, 27 inch draw, 60-70 lb limbs, 340 Ibo, 30 ATA. There are a few marks on the riser as pictured, just want to be honest and get that out there. The limbs are perfect not a scuff on them. May consider trading for a Mathews. Preferably a helim, or a z series. Can possibly include trophy ridge revolution rest and black gold rush 4 pin sight. 500 bare OBO.
  7. Went to the range and got the red dot almost completely dialed in. I didn't count within a 10 inch circle but at 45 steps (forgot my range finder) I had 51 fatal hits with many more head and neck hits that weren't striking a vital out of my kicks 665 and 67 & 43 hits with the carlsons Long Beard 660 tube with long beard xr #6s. I think the 20 pellet difference was due to the fact the barrel was a little dirty at this point. I came home and polished the barrel, I thought I've gotten the gun clean before but man did it shine. Going to head back out and compare patterns with the Long beard 5s and 6s hopefully this improves on the already great numbers!
  8. I will give this a try. Thanks for the step by step!
  9. Scrub with a copper brush? What is the benefit of scrubbing as I usually just give a quick clean and oil after the season or heavy shooting.
  10. I broke down and bought a vortex strikefire 2 red dot for turkey hunting. I was always a bead guy but I have a Mossberg 500 thumbhole turkey gun that for the life of me, I couldn't get to pattern to my liking because it threw patterns high and left with the truglo rifle sights it came with. After missing two turkeys opening day with the gun at 15 and 35 yards I threw it in the safe and pulled out my Franchi Affinity I use for waterfowl and got my limit the second and third week of the season. I hate having a gun collect dust so I figured I'd give it a second chance with the red dot as I should be able to zone in on the best section of the pattern. Any tips for sighting in to save time and money would be appreciated.

  12. Hey guys, really trying to get this moved 600 flat takes the bow with qad hdx drop away rest
  13. Any Snow Goose hunters on here? Looking to get into it.
  14. Really late to this but I run a improved modified and like to run 2 or 3 shot for mallard sized ducks. I like an even but tighter pattern and the ducks I hit this year haven't flinched after hitting the ground. The best way to know exactly is to pattern your gun. My weatherby/back up loaner gun patterns extremely tight with a modified choke and black cloud 2's but my Franchi Affinity gives me my "perfect pattern" from 0-30 yards with the improved modified which is a tighter constriction. Depending on the Gun/choke/load/shooter patterns can vary drastically.
  15. That's what I do I take one or two weekends during the regular season to gun hunt my property upstate. It's all I can handle, like rebel darling I get more excited bow hunting the only time I ever dose off on stand in with the rifle in hand. Buying used is an awesome way to get into bow hunting. Just be careful you don't get so hooked you jump in the deep end and buy a new bow every year like I did it can get expensive lol.
  16. Anyone else with me and has been hunting with the bow during the regular season? Finally got one down a few days ago been a rough season thus far.
  17. Surprisingly had a small spike running a doe on Dec. 5th. Last real rutting activity I encountered was a few days before thanksgiving.
  18. I took three does off one property the past two seasons and then this year I've only seen a three small bucks and two does in maybe 20 sets. The first two years I only didn't see deer on maybe three sets. So when I saw the two does walk by I let them pass. My Westchester county spot has so many deer you could shoot a deer the night before and have more pass by the next day. Like others said gauge your spots but if your your in need of meat whack a doe I'd take out a doe over a small buck any day.
  19. Brought a buddy hunting in Cortland Manor and of course all the action was by his set. Big buck far off showed no interest in his bleats or grunts. Nice 8 point chased two does around and past his stand and stopped 13 yards broadside right at dark then ran around between us until well after dark. 15 minutes earlier and he would have had a chip shot at him. The seeking phase may not be full swing but it should break open any day.
  20. I'm in Patterson, hunt Carmel, Kent, and cortland manor lol. Maybe my spots are just a little slower haven't been out since Sunday though.
