  1. My 1st deer was also a spike. Now I can be more selective. And definitely mount him !!
  2. http://theharlemvalleynews.com/8805/95522/a/man-shot-in-hunting-accident
  3. I hunt on state land, very deep in. Me and another local guy are the only 2 people who venture in. I got to know him over the years, and we help each other with the drag. It's usually a hot spot. This year, I see him walking out at 9am, and I wave to him and we BS a while. Thought it was strange he was walking out so early. Turns out, he only set up his tree stand 2 days before the season opener !!! So he obviously scented up the area, made a racket setting up his stand, and killed the area. He couldn't get off work, blah blah blah. So I hunted somewhere else in the afternoon, only to see coyote sign.
  4. Opening day. 4pm, I unload my rifle, lock it in the case, get in the drivers seat, start the motor, and 5 Doe's come into the parking lot, and were not spooked at all. 2 mama Doe's keep an eye on me, and the little fawns munching on grass with not a care in the world.
  5. That's a successful day hunting if you ask me.
  6. 3J & 3M. No deer in the woods. I saw deer on the roads, and next to highways. But not a track in the woods. And there is snow where I hunt, so I would have seen tracks, and beds. The Coyote population has exploded, and is taking it's toll. I was excited too, because snow on opening day, and the rut. I thought for sure I would see deer.
  7. What if I really scent up an area for a full month(s) before the season. Then the deer will get used to it,& not be spooked out on opening day. Maybe ... possibly.........
  8. Typically I see 2" diameter trees get rubbed.
  9. 180 gr 30-06 is way too for a little deer. 150 gr or downsize the rifle.
  10. This is the 1st season I remember that opening day coincides with the rut.
  11. NY is known for hunting accidents. Some guy killed his hunting partner last year. A few years ago, 2 hunters shot Elk, I don't know what happened to them. A little kid was shot driving deer a few years ago. I sometimes think hunting public land is better, because others should expect to see others.
  12. Do NOT shoot at Orange !!! Make sure you know what you're shooting at !!! Deer's are typically brown, maybe a few white botches here & there. But typically brown, with a white tail. They are NOT orange. Don't use your scope to look at me from 1000 yards away. Ya, you, you know who I'm talking about. Most of us have a wife & kids to come home to. THANK YOU.
  13. I was in CO. The mule bucks were all very small. 2x3 at most. No big racks.
  14. $15K per person? An Elk hunt out west is $4K without airfare. Plus additional if you want a mule deer, or bear.
  15. My limit is 1/2 mile. Otherwise, I'm going to the venison donation truck Either that, or hire a bunch of liberals to drag my deer out.
  16. Having wished for snow, last year on opening day, 65 degrees outside, I got a deer. Maybe the orange army pushed him, but he wasn't spooked. Just strolling through the forest.
  17. When I'm busted, it's usually because I made noise. Shouldering my rifle. picking up my rifle, crunching leaves. They pick up any unusual noise, and look that direction immediately.
  18. My friends friend gave me venison 2 years ago. It had the nastiest taste ever. Not rotten, not spoiled. Just a nasty taste. I couldn't place it. Maybe it was gut shot?? I had to throw it out. I wonder if the gut juices tainted the meat??
  19. Do you think the deer can hear you tapping the screen if your phone is on silent ??
  20. 2 arrows !!! Great job. I always shoot my deer at least 2 times with a rifle. I don't like chasing them anymore.
  21. My BAR is not that accurate. 3" groups at 100 yards if I'm lucky. I don't know where to start??? I pulled a bore snake through it 10 times. I have a very expensive scope, so that's not it. I tried various ammo.... Is there a quality gun smith in NY that does accuracy issues ?
  22. I used the one in Farmingdale, and the one in Oakdale. I have had good & bad experiences with both. One has a freezer, one does not. If it's a warm day, I know which butcher I will be using. If it's a semi warm day, and the guy without the freezer has 10 deer in front of you..... I get paranoid. That's just me. One guy uses butcher paper, the other vacuum packs. I actually like the butcher paper better. I have thrown away meat from both butchers. Some meat had a nasty taste, and I couldn't place what was wrong. Sometimes, I think the vacuum process leaves a nasty smell of sulfur. Last year, I'm sure I Got back my meat, it tasted great, and it was vacuum packed. I think the stars need to be aligned for everything to turn out right.
