Loaded Gun + Unlocked Car = Stupid
nyantler replied to Deerthug's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
There were no kids involved ... and you forgot to read the last sentance of my post. And I didn't hear anything about a gun being in plain view... just that some thief entered his vehicle, on his property, and stole his gun. You are spinning it into something that didn't happen, which was entirely the point of my post. You can create anything you like after the fact.. but that isn't what happened. -
No... not because he isn't a nice buck, but I have a personal challenge to take a P&Y buck with recurve from the ground at 20 yards or less.

The Tyrant Bloomberg Strikes Again
nyantler replied to Elmo's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I am going to buy a huge 64 oz cup so that when I go to NYC I can buy small drinks, pour them in the huge cup and walk around the city. Hopefully Bloomberg will see me and wonder where the hell I bought it..lol Oh no! Maybe I could get fined for owning a big cup..!! -
I understand that scenario without AR's.. that isn't what I was refering to... what you discribe wasn't an accident because you meant to shoot that deer and either way it turned out would have been legal. That isn't irresponsible, thats just taking a chance. If you didn't have the doe tag it would have been irresponsible, illegal and not an accident regardless of how happy of a camper you were. You're right... things can happen... you shoot a 4 point that you shouldn't have because you didn't want to take the time to identify it properly and get caught you'll be ticketed and fined... thats what happens. I agree AR's change the game... kinda tells me hunters don't like having to be responsible sometimes or else there wouldn't be a problem with having to identify your target first. In your case... if you didn't have a buck tag would you still have shot that deer for a doe or would you have looked harder to make sure not knowing it if it was a buck? Or if you didn't have the doe tag would you still have taken the shot not knowing if it might be a doe. Thats kind of the situation you'll be in with AR's.. still having to make sure you're doing something legal. I just think it's a simple decision to make in my opinion.

Yeah I remember NY Outdoors.. the guy from NIMO was Rick Wise a good friend of mine and my sisters highschool boyfriend... good guy.. and yes a very regular guy... he was divorced with no kids.. so I doubt he was feeding his family... lol... they just couldn't get the sponsorship to keep the show going.. too bad... nice to see local regular guys taking a shot at doing a show. I still see him from time to time.

Yeah, there ya go... probably a good example! LOL

Be careful.. because there is no known case of anyone being completely immune to poison ivy ... one time you just might rub it on yourself and end up really not liking it.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda.... a child wasn't hurt or even involved.. so that is a non issue here..thats a whole different senario and can't be used to judge this one... kind like saying that you left a quarter on your night stand and the neighbor came into your house and stole it.. then saying that a young child could have taken it, swallowed it and choked to death... so leaving a quarter on the nightstand now defies common sense?... just doesn't work that way... you can always come up with a bad ending to any scenario if you search hard enough. -
I look at it differently in that I think the laws are designed to make hunters take a better look at what they're shooting at before pulling the trigger... if you are not sure, don't shoot... I don't feel it is the laws fault that hunters refuse to take the time to make a proper identification or are unwilling to let a deer walk to make sure the law is not broken. It's become to common place to blame someone other than oneself for failing to do the right thing. Just because you have a gun that can shoot 200 yards, doesn't mean you should be shooting something that you can't identify. The remedy for your senario is not to do away with the law... the remedy would be get a scope if you want to shoot that far or just don't shoot that far. There will be other opportunities. Definitely not worth breaking the law over. I know you meant that there are those out there that will make the "mistake" you discribed... my point is that it is not an accident or a mistake, just plain irresponsibilty. I feel it would happen regardless of AR's and that it has happened before current AR's with the original 3inch law. I seems to be built into some hunters DNA.. regardless of the law.

You're probably right...

Scratch that last post..lol.. he looks way more impressive from a different angle!
-
I agree he is way cool... I was just asking because he is even more impressive if he's a 1.5 year old... for a 2 year old.. lots of points but not much else.. not quite as impressive to me.. honestly, I've seen nicer 2 .5 year old 8 pointers... don't get me wrong though.. he's still a keeper for the future.
-
Fortunately, that is a problem I will never have to worry about.
-
Regardless of how you go about trying to be scent free... all hunters should know that fooling a deer's nose is one of the most important part of being consistently successful.. you can never be totally scent free... having the wind in your favor is the best way to keep your scent from a deer, but masking your scent somehow is probably way better than doing nothing. Especially if you are a stationary hunter.

I understand that.. I walk public land ALL the time.. but none of what you discribe is by accident... an accident is something that can't be helped... what you're talking about is not an accident... it's being irresponsible... they know what they're doing is wrong, yet still do it... someone paying attention and doing the right thing will NOT mistake a legal AR buck with at least 3 points on one side for a doe and 2 fawns, spike, or crotch horn... because he has taken the time to identify his target before pulling the trigger... not paying attention and doing the wrong thing is not an accident.

Nah! The depression was just as bad or worse.. the difference is that those people had the will and fortitude to get through it... this younger generation won't survive because they don't have either of those qualities. To them a challenge is getting the garbage cans out to the end of the driveway!!

You must have lived in my neighborhood Culver..LOL.. One guy just had to drink his beer from a straw 'til he healed up!

I guess we could ask the same thing about gasoline left in the back of a pickup and a lighter left inside the car... imagine the damage that would do? Or better yet... you forgot to bring the DECON you bought to get rid of the mice or rats in your shed and left it in the car.. some kid could find that.. think it was candy and.. THUD! Dead on the driveway. Each example I just gave is just as deadly as the next... If it wasn't a gun in question.. we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Having said that I think we all agree that the guy was irresponsible, but no adult should be snooping around another persons property... especially his house or automobile. -
The reason shows are what they are today is because it's the only way to make enough money to afford to have a show.

Is anyone else tired of farmed deer on magazines?

Exactly! -
How do you accidentally take a buck that is too small? 3-points on one side of a deers antlers is pretty easy to count... if you aren't sure you shouldn't be shooting. Like any other game law you would be ticketed and fined. Plus, if you're having trouble counting the points because you can't see them well.. he's probably too small!

It's not just about healthy enough.. it's about a more stable structure of buck ages and buck doe ratios...and that means a "healthier", more balanced deer herd... What would human society be like if none of the males got older and 80-90 % of the males were teenagers running things?... there wouldn't be a hell of a lot of experience or wisdom.. life would go on yes, but things wouldn't be even as stable as they are now.. and they aren't that stable now... not that mankind wouldn't survive, just not as well as it would with older generations of males to help balance things out.

Kind of true... the deer he takes pics of are definitely fenced in on a big tract of land.. but live naturally without much human intervention. I use to photograph in the same spot as Charlie... until he purchased his own piece of property.. the deer are not altered in any way to produce extra large racks or body size... they are just protected from being hunted so that they can be observed without fear of losing them to an arrow or a bullet. For all intent and purpose live the way they would anywhere, except for being protected so that they make it to an older age. But, yes, it is a controlled environment making it easier to get good photos. -
