Reducing or masking your scent works on the basis that you can reduce your scent to a point where it is not alarming to a whitetail.. depending on the amount of human scent that animal is use to... scent reduction in areas with a higher population of humans is much more effective than an isolated area where it is not normal for a whitetail to smell human scent... even the slightest human scent will raise the alarm for a deer that knows there is not suppose to be human scent in that area.

Loaded Gun + Unlocked Car = Stupid
nyantler replied to Deerthug's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Was the gun hidden? Sitting on the seat? In the glove compartment? What the hell was someone from the neighborhood doing in his car? If you have someone going through areas of your property that they don't belong.. Whats to keep them from entering your home when you're away? And doing it just to make a point? Gun in the car or not... nothing he did made that person decide to enter his property without permission... he may have made an already criminal act a bit more of a news story... but I'm guessing the criminal tresspass would still have occured anyway... we just wouldn't be hearing about it. -
Everyone has their own hunting experience... tips and stories here should be put in the memory banks and may relate to future situations in the woods... hard to get hunting from a book or video... experience obviously is the best teacher and it will take years to become comfortable with your hunting abilities based on where, when, how and how much you hunt.

Are you sure that 12 is a 2 year old Sam? He has the more body characteristics of a 1.5 year old...

Younger deer are easier to fool with cover scents.. older deer not so easy. there is much to be said for experience.

Loaded Gun + Unlocked Car = Stupid
nyantler replied to Deerthug's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I kind of agree.. what is the difference between your house or your car or the shed in the back yard.. all are your property. The person that stole his gun should be charged with several felonies... stupid or not.. leaving your wallet in the car is stupid too... but if someone steals it, it's still a crime... the wallet wouldn't have gotten any press though. -
Loaded Gun + Unlocked Car = Stupid

My question exactly. -
I rarely go into the woods at dark any more... but my big fear is that my flashlight will die when I still have a few miles to get out in the ADK's... it gets really dark in those woods at night...

How about the hunting clothes and boots back then... lucky some of us didn't freeze to death before we were 18... a snowmobile suit and snowmobile boots were the warmest clothes you could get... and they didn't come in camo or blaze orange... most of the time it was cotton long underwear and jeans.. and maybe a Woolrich coat if Dad had the extra money. Maybe thats why the cold doesn't bother me so much now.. or maybe at 53 I'm just numb from the neck up.

You forgot how there were no laws against smoking in public... as a kid I sat in the car while my mom and dad smoked like chimneys.. they smoked on planes, in restaurants, even in the doctors office! Seems crazy now.. but it was so normal back then. My parents both smoked a few packs a day, so I figure I did about a pack a day of 2nd hand smoking as a kid..

I am pretty good with a compass... but really all you need to do is make sure you get a reading before you enter the woods back to the nearest road.. make sure its a highly used road preferably the one you came in on... even if it's a long dirt road.. you may not get yourself back to your exact truck location.. but always good to get back to something that looks like civilization... main roads always lead somewhere which tends to ease your mind.. and the direction back to that road doesn't change as you walk through the woods. Getting lost in the woods is probably the biggest fear for most hunters so believe me you are not alone. The big woods are definitely not for everyone.

I am probably the odd man out here... my hunting style is a little unorthidox in todays hunting world... I never sit.. I rarely wear any scentcontrol anymore I totally rely on playing the wind... although I'm not a great marksman when it comes to shooting at targets, I rarely miss when I have an opportunity at a whitetail... I never wait for deer to come to me.. I go to the deer... I spend much of my bow season in search of a big buck to hunt... once I find sign or get a look at a decent buck.. I hunt that buck until I kill him... 9 times out of 10 it ends up being on snow... where I can find his track and dog him until I get a good shot... in the 18 years that I've hunted this way I've taken 12 bucks that score between 115 and 155. Each killed in a different location around the State and on public land except for the 155 buck which I tracked and killed behind my own home. I must also say that time in the field is a great advantage thats why I choose not to waste time waiting for bucks to come to me. From 16 yrs old to when I started hunting this way (19years) I killed mostly does and maybe a half dozen or more yearling bucks.. didn't kill my first deer until I was 25.. many years I didn't even see a buck (and I hunted a lot!) Although I agree time in the field is important and helps with increasing success.. I am a believer that waiting is far less effective than actively pursuing deer... I even hunt this way on small tracts of land and have been successful. I only hunt doe during the late muzzleloader with patch and ball... the same style I hunt bucks.. in 18 years I have taken at least one doe every year and two when I've drawn two tags... I donate half the meat every year from all those does to the Venison Donation drive to feed the hungry... probably my favorite time to hunt and most rewarding.

Late summer bucks at mock scrapes
nyantler replied to Buckstopshere's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Great stuff! Looks like you have a pretty diverse age class of bucks... the better the age structure the early signing starts.. hence all the activity around your mock scrape... very cool video!! -
I don't get that Biz.. you're taking an opportunity away from someone that will use them.

Welcome to the hunting community Brian..

My wife loves hunting season.. it's the only time she has control of the TV remote.

One of the most fun things my buddy and I do is hunt rabbits with our recurves.... we take turns being the dog, stomping brush piles and flushing rabbits for the other guy. We use blunt tipped arrows that kill them deader than dead when you hit them.. that is .. IF you hit them.

I bet NY hunters had a fit when AR's were imposed back in 1911 and hunting regulations began.

Yup... It's always a crapshoot when we're talking about NY hunters.

Video - 2 yotes take down a doe
nyantler replied to Fantail's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
That is very possible -
Nobody should expect to see B&C bucks by the millions in any of the AR zones with a 3 on a side rule.. the programs where merely designed to protect yearling bucks... regardless of who does or doesn't like it, the program has been successful in reaching its goal "to protect the majority of yearling bucks". After 100 years of managing the NY herds for small bucks.. the DEC has decided to make a move to see how it would be to manage for a diverse age class of bucks... and frankly... the majority of hunters are onboard... and of the remaining that aren't onboard most of them are neutral...only a small group is totally against the idea. Unfortunately, that's pretty much how it works in the world. Nothing gets 100% approval there are always some that just go against the grain... That's how we got liberals..
-
I stand corrected on the buck take increase.. you are correct that is just in 3H... all the other numbers are still valid... the goal of the program was to protect yearling bucks and it looks like that is working quite nicely... from about 70% to only around 15% now...
-
I like 15%.. which is the current percentage of yearling bucks taken in the AR areas... I also like that 36% of the bucks taken were 3 1/2 +.. thats up 258% from 5 years ago... and I like the 5.7% increase in total bucks harvested compared to 5 years ago when the programs started. Sounds like somethings working to me.

Who are you kidding?.. if they don't give you the answer you like.. you don't accept their answer either. If you don't like it I guess it just isn't correct. Why not do your own research then you won't have to be a sideline sitter and accept anyone elses answer.

I have given my answer too many times on this forum... go back and look... you guys make me tired.
