  1. Unfortunately you are a member of a large group of hunters with that same thought process...
  2. And there in lies the problem.. many of you really care nothing about the whitetail or it's conservation. That's okay until you start complaining that there isn't the quality or number of deer to your liking.
  3. Another nice 6-point taken by a friend... my kind of genetics.
  4. Just as a question for some of those that think that this buck would be good to get out of the gene pool... When have you ever seen such an exceptional 6-point?
  5. Its hard to know what a bucks real potential is.. there are too many factors involved...only you and the guys you hunt with can make a determination of whether or not he's a shooter... I'm not into managing for antlers .. when I see a mature buck that impresses me I shoot him... this buck is mature enough for me and has nice headgear.. especially for a six point. I wouldn't shoot him for any reason other than he "blows my skirt up". Although I can't be certain.. I would bet that this buck will always have just a 6-point frame... he may get a few stickers as he gets older but thats my guess. And it's nothing more than a guess... one thing all my knowledge of whitetails has shown me is that in the whitetail world anything is possible. No mature buck needs to be off limits for herd management only yearlings bucks and most 2.5 year olds... beyond that.. most mature bucks will become very experienced and you may never get more than just a quick glance at him anyway... in most cases the older a buck gets.. "the older a buck gets"... if you get my drift.

That has always been my thought for the reason deer management hasn't progressed like it should... many of us experienced the same thing as you did with you Dad and Grandfather... until we realize that our fathers and grandfathers knew nothing of deer biology.. it will be hard to undo what they thought us.
  7. Sorry Eddie, but I had to post this... not implying that you are anything like Biden, just thought it was funny.
  8. Herd genetics has nothing to do with producing a good representation of age classes in the buck population... when refering to genetics I'm sure you mean antler genetics... which would be hard to know given the fact that the past hunting practices never allowed buck to reach an age to know their real genetic potential. As for taking 8-10 years to see the benefit of your AR program..that would be more because not all yearlings are being protected by the current 3 on a side rule... making it take a bit longer to see big results... probably nothing to do with genetics at all... I do agree that the DEC is either limited in real knowledge of how to manage herds in differing counties or has some other reason (possibly political) for limiting DMU permits... my guess is it is a little of both.
  9. Killing "or culling" bucks from any herd because his antlers aren't meeting your standards is NOT deer management.. it is however trophy management... they are not the same thing. One is based on YOUR standards.. the other is based on herd health and balance. The buck looks to be a healthy buck of at least 3 years old with a big 6 point frame... shooting him for "deer" management purposes would be pointless... I would take him simply because he is a good mature big racked 6-pt... six points that size don't appear too often.
  10. I was just there over the weekend... Northville is a neat little town... stop in a visit the adirondack store.. cool stuff there.

There was a small study done years ago to see how ellusive each gender was... From what I recollect of the study.. they put one large buck and one older doe in a fenced wooded area.. I believe in the neighborhood of 100 acres if my memory serves me. Then they put a small group of hunters (no weapons) inside the fenced area to try and locate each deer. The doe was spotted several times over a week long period.. the buck was never seen. Having tracked many of both genders over the years.. I can say from years of personaal experience that a mature buck is much harder to catch up to than any other deer in the woods.
  12. Funny thing for me is I don't care much at all for his style of hunting... but i love the way he defends hunting and firearms.
  13. Bucks don't start "going the other way" until very very late in life... very very few bucks except maybe in the ADKs will get old enough in NY to do so.
  14. When deciding which guns were going to be considered "assault weapons"... Dianne Feinstein...doofus senator from California... leafed through a gun catalog to pick out the guns she thought looked like assault rifles and those were the guns added to the bill.. TRUE STORY!!

I guess there is something to that...
  16. Saw it... he has no idea what he's talking about when it comes to guns...
  17. Totally agree... and yes there certainly is no place to run. I think some confuse what they think is another good place to live... with the old saying " A nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there."
  18. You hit it right on the head.

I agree with woodsman20. Based on personal experience mature does are not nearly as elusive as a larger bucks... I will concede that older does have it over small bucks... there is something to be said for age and experience.
  20. Nobody is running yet because most of America doesn't see what is coming and frankly won't start paying attention until it is too late... kind of like the GREAT herd of sheep heading for a cliff as they follow the foolish lead sheep... some will be smart enough to stop before falling off the cliff, but most will follow blindly over the edge... the few smart sheep could do little to stop the others that trusted their leaders. That doesn't mean that the flock can't be great again and hopefully the smart sheep will tell the new flock as it grows... the history of the old sheep so that they are not doomed to repeat it.
  21. My thoughts exactly! Over the top? Maybe... but I still agree with what he has to say.. and he's even entertaining to watch while he's saying it.
  22. LOL.. I didn't say that the aging is accurate.. just that they check more deer than most people think... some of the DEC folks I've met couldn't age a deer if it had a birth certificate..!!
  23. The America that our forefathers created was the greatest country in the world... what our government is turning it into is not. America is no better off now than when King George was in power... George Washington would be rolling over in his grave from what has happen to this country. The progressive movement will be Americas downfall by moving us back towards what we fought so hard to escape.
