It is exactly the same ... just because there is a different way to get the info doesn't make the rule is any less a rule... if in doubt then you err on the side of the law and don't shoot... there is a sure way to keep from being tempted or making a mistake.. and that would be to check the sunrise sunset times and don't enter the woods until that time... I really don't understand why any of this is a problem... it's only a problem for those that want to push he envelope.... if 5 minutes before or after legal shooting time is ok today.. then why not six tomorrow? I mean its so close to 5 it wouldn't be all that bad... and well.. if its was 6 minutes tomorrow .. I'm sure 7 minutes wouldn't hurt anyone... and if 7 minutes isn't bad.. 8 is only 1 minute more.. no big deal... does anyone see the pattern here?? you fellas can make up your own rules.. and thats up to you.. but don't go screaming about how the EnCon officer was an idiot because he gave you a ticket for shooting before or after LEGAL shooting time.... he is not the idiot.

"0" in 37 years of hunting

Yeah thats a legit buck.. the fellas name is Steve Knapp... I have talked to him by email... story on the way.
-
I should add too Dave.. that proficiency and making good choices are also very different

Hey.. you thought you were doing the right thing... so it was the thing to do... everything doesn't always turn out the way you plan.. and thats just life...beating yourself up doesn't make it easier... from your story I can tell that you care about your kid and teaching him the right things.. thats way more important than how the story played out... you're doing the right thing just caring about your boy.

No need to explain... I think i described it just how you said it happened. Which part did I get wrong? you did miss two deer... and you aimed high and got a lucky hit in the heart... all in the same day...

i haven't ever found that to be true.. there is always one nice buck in every area... but i suppose there are fellas that only have small places to hunt which means the chances might be smaller of seeing that one big one... I have numerous hunting spots and I often travel to out of the way state property that I haven't hunted just to look for bigger bucks... I spend very little time hunting anywhere that I feel will be unproductive... there will always be big bucks someplace... the harder you look the easier they are to find... sitting in one spot that has never produced big bucks is similar to the definition of insanity " Doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results."

Good point... sometimes hunters want a big buck so bad that they will do anything to get one.. but I won't pass judgement until I know the whole story.. if the guy was hunting in a legit spot and that campus buck just happened to be unlucky enough to pass through that spot.. oh well...but if the guy was hunting that particular campus buck knowing it's history with the area and was looking for a way to lure the buck to a spot where he knew he wouldn't get in trouble killing it.. that might be a different story... no doubt that is one hell of a buck... it still leaves to be seen whether it was a good hunt or not. I'd be ashamed to say I hunted that buck on purpose knowing it's history.

I have gone 12 years now without taking a buck with my recurve... I have passed on more bucks than most guys have seen in there lifetime... my goal is to take a Pope & Young buck on the ground with my recurve at 20 yards or less... how's that for really handcuffing yourself..??? But thats what is fun for me now... I could have taken a buck every year for those 12 years, but that wouldn't have done it for me... I know that when I finally reach my goal... if I ever do... that buck will definitely be special. and I can't even tell you how many cool experiences I have had watching bucks knowing that I wasn't going to shoot them...and with the bigger bucks that I just couldn't get close enough to.. to each his own I guess..I thoroughly acknowledge that I am a bit strange..lol

I think you should just throw as many arrows at deer as you can.... hell, one guy on here missed 2 deer and took a guess at a 40 yard shot , aimed high and got lucky hitting a buck right in the heart.... all in the same day...wow...now thats the way to do it huh????

I know there are a lot of deer like that out there... that over the years have become forgotten. but i promise you that at the time they were killed... they were the talk of the area... remember lots of those bucks you talk of were before the internet and cellphones... news didn't travel as far and fast as today... it is nearly impossible to keep a trophy quiet today..like I said.. if you tell one other person other than yourself.. the news will spread like wildfire in the hunting world. Whats more surprising about this pic is that if it was killed illegally... that didn't make the news?.. I think if that campus buck had been jacked... that would make big news in that area.

I've been laughing so hard I think i peed my pants!!... But, seriously... I'm worried there is going to be way to much reporting now.. I might even be the first to go..

gotta love the ol' Hawkin!! -
Even if they aren't put in the book... if someone other than the owner knows about it.. it will spread like wildfire

There is a good example of .. just because you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't there.. you just picked a day that they decided not to show up.. another day might turn out differently

the 100 inch mark is just a number...for me 100 inches is when the rack starts to get impressive.. I guess everyone has a standard that they use.. some are higher some are lower... its all about what still gets you excited.
-
that says it all right there..wait it out...don't settle if it doesn't blow your skirt up.
-
That is a big piebald.. you don't see them that big usually.. nice
-
A buck that big would never fly under the radar...
-
the only reliable aging process is tooth disection... teeth aging is not an exact science... it is very hard for a deer to grow that kinda bone and body in 2.5 years..
-
Any year that I can still get in the woods is a good season.. if I never kill another deer in my life... I will always have a great experience as long as I can be out hunting.
