  1. It's a barberry bush. I don't know how to id the different species, but it definitely is a barberry.
  2. Hey ladies and gents. I was wondering if anyone has been up to Bear Swamp State forest in 4F yet this year? I found a nice spot down in there last year and got a nice doe, but the trees I was sitting near were tagged for logging. If anyone has been up there and done some walking, I'd be interested in talking to you and seeing how much they tore up my spot. I'm guessing its a slippery muddy mess
  3. Just mix it with 1.5oz of water. Presto, liquid attractant.
  4. Once I am back up that way permanently next year I'll give you an invite up. My father lives just inside the southern border and he has some nice ones running around up there. They are a LOT harder to hunt and pattern because there isn't the large fields, but when you finally do connect on one it is very satisfying.
  5. Should you be able to shoot ANY bucks in an area that they need the doe population lowered? If they did away with buck tags in those areas the doe take should increase. I'm not arguing that this should be the case, what I am saying is stop trying to impose statewide regulations to fix a LOCAL problem. The deer population where I hunt has been stable for years (according to DEC, I actually think it is going up). That is why they don't issue DMP's. Stop trying to fix your problem by taking away other hunters opportunities. Forcing OBR, EAB or AR on the state would be like saying, "Since the bow hunters aren't doing their part of taking does and the gun hunters take more in general, we are going to do away with the bow season and just extend gun season." Taking away other hunters opportunities is never a good thing.
  6. As far as I can tell, there are no DMP's simply because they don't issue them in the 'dacks. I have yet to see one reason from the DEC why none have been issued for the area in my memory. I would venture to say that in the area I hunt up north, there are probably more deer than there are in units like 4A who do have some limited numbers available, they are just harder to find since there aren't wide open fields everywhere to see them in.
  7. The thing is, in many units where there are no DMP's available or if they are there are very few, and if NY goes with OBR hunters in those areas are completely done with their season if they shoot one deer. Many of you keep forgetting that they aren't trying to reduce the population in the entire state, only in select areas. Making changes for the entire state in ways that eliminate opportunities for others goes against what we as hunters should be trying to support. I would fully support a OBR for the areas that they are having problems with the population being to high, but don't try to force it on the entire state.
  8. And that is why I am against it. If you want to manage the age structure of bucks, buy yourself a parcel of land and do it there. Don't try to force other hunters to do things your way and take away their privileges for no other reason than some hunters want to shoot deer with larger antlers. I'm all for managing the herd for optimal health, but antlers don't equal herd health.
  9. How about you explain instead why every single area of the state NEEDS it?
  10. It's completely possible to hunt with only the shotgun and knife and be very successful. The boots are probably the most important one on your list there, don't skimp on them.
  11. I'm pretty sure this applies only to publicly maintained roads, not ones you or a farmer maintain.
  12. Got the wife a muzzleloader. Bought two new stands to replace ones stolen over the years. Also picked up some lighter camo for gator season this year, I was sweating like a mofo last year.
  13. My vote is find a used ranger/mazda pickup with 100,000 or less on it. I have put 70,000 mi on our ranger since we bought it. Paid $5,000 for it w/ 100,000 and I fully expect to put another 70,000 on it before it gives me any serious problems other than routine maintenance.
  14. I just had the Knight I won on gunbroker last week shipped directly to the house, no problems.
  15. My father and grandfather have theirs set up this way. I will eventually with my wife once we are back up there and go through the PIA of getting a NYS permit.
  16. As far as I know, you can use up to 1.5 oz of liquid attractant for bears in NY.
  17. It could have just been how the question was phrased. If it went something like, "Which would you prefer? 1) The first 15 days of bow season changed to antlerless only or 2) An early muzzleloader season put in place" I can definitely see there being an overwhelming majority in support of these changes.
  18. Good! If I had to guess I'd say it looks like a Master Built Sportsman Elite... if so I have the same one. I love mine. Just did some Blue Runners (oily fish) that we speared in the Keys. Marinated with red wine and some Everglades seasoning, then smoked with a mix of Alder and Cherry. YUM!
  19. The inside of that smoker is way to clean...
  20. My father's favorite gun is a 10/22Mag that he bought a long while back that is all stainless with a rubbery/synthetic stock. His go-to gun for yotes, squirrels, rabbits or whatever else he happens to see.
  21. Not really true. In NYS, it doesn't matter if you give permission to someone or they are trespassing, if its posted or not, the landowner is protected from liability unless there is a clear safety hazard that they knew of and neglected to warn someone of, such as a well in the middle of a field that they knew of. In any other case, the landowner is protected. Now, as soon as one dollar changes hands, the landowners becomes liable for a LOT more. That is why EVERY lease you will find through a company requires liability insurance. You may be able to come to an agreement with a farmer without the insurance, but that is just because he doesn't realize that he is suddenly liable if you sprain your ankle on his land.
  22. Use a ladder to mount it way up in a tree looking down.

    DMP

Your license from last year should have the total preference points on it. If that doesn't match what you have in decals call them up or go in person.

You just have to learn how to work the system. Apply for 4A for your first choice. If you don't get it, at least you built a point for next year. For your second chance, apply for somewhere with a higher chance like 4F. Prefrence points only get used on the first choice, but count towards both choices. I have been building PP for a few years by applying to 4A where I cant get a DMP (Non Resident) and still getting a DMP every year. This year put me over the 3 PP limit, so next year I should actually be able to draw 4A if I was to apply for there even though I'm a Non Resident.
  25. Just get the micro SD cards. Leave them in the adapter that makes them a regular sized SD while they are in the camera. When you get there, take them out and put the micro in your phone. You can access the images easily that way without worrying about cables.
