  1. Along the lines of what Doc said we really don't know what went through his mind and it is hard to figure out. I think there may be a bit more to the story. Did a search yesterday (ok I creeped) of their names on FB, and if I saw their correct pages, it appears the son is a veteran who saw combat in the Gulf. Maybe PTSD is involved ??? Whatever the case...prayers sent....
  2. Thanks guys. Going by the lettering on my rod, that fish was roughly 29-30" . Cold fishing, but hooking one of these beauties sure takes the nip out of the air...LOL
  3. Hunting can be outstanding in the Rochester area....Monroe Co. is a perennial producer of book bucks year after year. Access to land however can be a hangup. No public land in the immediate area. If you can get access to some of the surrounding private lands you wont have any problem punching deer tags. Fishing can also be awesome. Many options. Lower Genny has seasonal trout and salmon runs and the upper river has decent fishing for warm water species. Plenty of ponds and bays along the Ontario shoreline, as well as a few smaller finger lakes less than an hour south. Caught this one today down in the lower river....
  4. After reading post upon post about botched taxidermy work and dishonest practices on here, I thought I might just post this. Anyways I found this video someone did and thought I would forward it to get a glimpse of the man and his practice...... It's hard to find one as honest and humble as this man, producing quality work with over 60 years experience !
  5. The way I read it, cut as much firewood as you want....LOL Cutting firewood has a legitimate purpose and it would also be occurring on land that the neighbor 'doesn't have rights or privileges to take wildlife'.
  6. That is an awesome buck and great accomplishment.
  7. My hats off to you and your group. Great sportmanship !
  8. That sounds like BS. to me. Usually wildlife agencies dispatch of problem bears themselves. I find it hard to believe they would give permission to a bunch of hunters to trespass on someone else's land.

  10. At least one taken in Prattsburg area on the opener. The guys were talking about it at the local watering hole Saturday night.....
  11. Looks deeper than it was. Maybe 4-5". Western NY last weekend before the thaw. Long gone now.
  12. Saw these two boys on public land last weekend (2/22) with full head dresses...

  14. What a shame... I guess that is a sign the rut is on.....
  15. Lots of good info already posted. just a few points that I have learned from playing around with some trees and also working in the horticulture field... 1. Crab apples are self fruiting while apples are not, meaning you need different varieties of apples that flower at the same time to get pollination. There are charts you can find online with suggested cross pollinators. Crab apples can actually pollinate almost all apples species and planting one or two near your apple trees is a good practice to ensure pollination (also done in commercial apple orchards.) 2. My experience is that the crab apples, being self pollinating are more reliable fruit producers than regular apple trees. 3. The thinking that bigger apples are better may be a myth. Ever see a deer try and eat a big ole juicy apple? Kind of awkward for them to try and get the thing into their mouth and actually can be quite comical. LOL. Crab apples are single bite sized morsals, much easier for them to feed upon. The best in my opinon are some of the older varieties of crabs that are in between in size....about like a golf ball. Dolgo, Brandywine, etc. are a few such sized ones. Don't get me wrong, a deer will never turn down an apple, but I have witnessed them got to the smaller crab apples first, when side by side. 4. mix varieties that drop their fruit at different times. Some drop early, while some will persist right into the winter ensuring a constant food supply. 5. unless you are able to water these trees thru the summer, plant the trees in the fall. At this time of year they go dormant anyways, and there is much moisture in the ground. By the time summer hits the following year, the trees will have taken root and have a better chance at surviving through the dry season that a tree planted in the spring. 6. Later summer and into the fall nurseries and big box stores start clearing their inventory of nursery stock, so keep your eye out for some good deals. This past fall I happened to be at Home Depot and stumbled upon fruit trees on clearance for 15.00 a piece. These were 6'-7' trees and an inch in caliper ! 7. If you are hand selecting trees from a nursery, look for ones with taller branching habits, i.e. the branches are higher from the ground to keep away from critters. 8. tree collars are a must not just to protect the trunk from deer, but from more importantly from the bark eaters like rabbits and mice. 9. Don't over look planting Hawthorn trees. These are the man killers with the 1" thorns that sometimes are generically called 'thorn apples'. while not actually and apple tree, these produce that small, red, pea sized apple looking fruit that deer, grouse, etc. will also feed upon and provide good cover when planted close together (ever try walking through a grove of these...ouch). There are certain ornamental cultivars of this tree like 'Winterking' that will hold its fruit late, almost until the next spring. 10. Fruit trees in general don't like 'wet feet', meaning they prefer dier soils. Don't attempt them in soils that are soggy or stay real moist even into the summer, they will die from root rot.
  16. November 13th. Public Land. Archery November 20. Public Land. Shotgun "Mercy Kill" Not the buck I had hoped to fill my regular season tag with. Was content just filming this buck until I noticed a limp and blood on his back leg. Without hesitation, I dropped the camera, picked up my gun and then dropped him. Turned out he was indeed hit in the back ham and would have had a miserable death to gangrene and/or coyotes I believe. Waited to see if anyone came trailing him, as I would have offered them the deer to continue hunting on my buck tag the rest of the season.....nobody came. I tagged him and he will eat just fine. No regrets....
  17. Correct they are on sale at Cabela's...for $ 189.99 , and NO, FREE SHIPPING doesn't apply to this item if you read closer....in fact there is a surcharge....that will put you well over 200.00 even on sale..... I'm not forcing anyone to buy it.....if you are interested and think 175.00 is too high make me a reasonable and I will consider it. As stated from Cabelas: " Due to the size and/or weight of this item, there will be a surcharge added to your total shipping cost for each item shipping via Standard Express. "

  19. "my only Bitc** on here his to the guys MOSTLY GROWn men who shoot the 1=11/2 yr old deer the spikes 4 pts small sixes and just smaller bucks in general 10-60 inch deer they not only post pics but a so proud of it story as well. that upsets me and embarrases me.(legal deer or not) I for yrs have let the small bucks/deer go in hopes they wil continue to be passed by other hunters and in hopes for that deer to be bigger next yr. your deer you say was a 183inch BOONE / CROCKET was a deer that was fortunite enough to be passed yr after yr. I cant wait till all of NY adopts the ARs and even some mid west deer laws shorted gun seasons ect. we as hunters really are hurting are future of deer hunting by shooting any and every deer we see. Thats My only Bitch I congratulate any 1 on a succesful hunt but in the same thought wish and hope they d up there buck age / size standards!!! " Lighten up Francis ! We all hunt for different reasons....trophy is in the eye of the beholder. Why is a 4 point taken still hunting 2 miles off the road on public land less of a trophy than a 170 class buck taken by some fat arse sitting over a well manicured food plot, that drove to his stand on a 4 wheeler, and that has only been on stand for an hour because his trail camera showed him thats when the buck had been showing up? LMAO You make it sound like you don't get fulfillment from your hunting experience unless you take down a big horn. Sorry to hear that. ....
  20. "Where did it say he was taken at? " Wasn't specific out of respect for his friend he said, only said southerntier so Ithaca area sounds right. He stated that his friend that took the deer has been hunting and scouting his heart out and that it was a deserving buck. Sounds like the case of alot of hard work finally paid off....
  21. Must be they took the time to photoshop 2 pictures to make it more believable....LMAO
  22. Saw a different pic of this buck on another forum. A friend of the hunter posted it. He stated it was a state land buck. Hey, ya never know !
  23. It is easy enough to drop your number but you can never go back up. Don't sell yourself short you have a nice property there. Right now is a good time to put it on the market. Hunters on the roads and many might be discouraged from the seasons results and have decided to make a land investment. I know I always drive the backroads this time of year in the areas I hunt 'looking' to see what may have popped up. Once spring hits people get much busier and the thoughts and urges of buying tend to wean until the beginning of the next hunting season.....my $.02
