  1. You might be right. I may be expecting too much out of it. I wonder what it is capable of group-wise, though.
  2. I've been shooting this a lot in the past couple of days, with a few different arrows. Sometimes I'm grouping insanely tight and other times the groups are extremely sloppy, like 1.5" variance at 15 yards from a rest which I think is unacceptable. The trigger is despicable, but I'm getting used to it. The scope is not great, with a very fuzzy picture--I have a really hard time totally nailing down exactly where I should be viewing it, and if my eye is not dead center I can see the crosshairs wave around the target quite a lot. With the nikons on my guns I never have a confidence problem knowing exactly when everything is aligned. I absolutely hate to buy another scope right now but I'm thinking about the nikon Xbow scope. It's not cheap, though, but I could use it for years and years I guess.
  3. But look at the examples in my first post. Has anybody here ever seen that $60 stand for $120? If field & stream has ever sold it at $120 it's been for such a short period of time it seems to be contrary to the law, in my view.
  4. Most of my hunting is in AM due to convenience (easier to get up early when family asleep). Haven't yet had luck with one at night.
  5. But it shows that if you can get 440 @ 165, eventually somebody will create one shooting a good bit faster at the NY limit of 200. EDIT: turns out scorpyd has hit 450 @ 175: http://scorpyd.com/aculeus-crossbow/
  6. I'll go months between shooting long gun. I am a member of a range that is fairly close by but honestly it's just very boring shooting paper, so most of the rounds are when I go to land somewhere and shoot tin cans or whatever else and that's only something I tend to do a couple times/year.
  7. I think with 200 lbs this could do around 470 FPS: http://scorpyd.com/vtec-crossbow/
  8. Yeah they looked like a traditional that somebody had put some tiny cams onto! Now they look like a weapon used by the predator. The best is when somebody is on craigslist still trying to get good money for ancient bows.
  9. As for the Ravin, I think everybody should go to a store that sells one like field and stream and just pick one up. They make all the other crossbows look like stone age garbage. They are beautiful to look at, very compact and streamlined, and they shoot very fast. They are very cool. Also illegal for hunting in NY, but very nice pieces of kit. The autococker on the concorde is nifty.
  10. I'm on third season with bow. I will be breaking out my new crossbow this saturday. I think the added speed is important because it does mean less arrow drop which means less critical judging of aim--still important, though, and I'll continue to use a range-finder. But less travel time means, at the same distance as bow, less variance in vertical travel. Also speed = penetration. I am going to be shooting 445 grain arrows which out of my 370 rated xbow I'm estimating will travel at 340-345 FPS. They are going to hit with tremendous power compared to even the best compound bows and should have spectacular penetration. I have a 29" draw length and my compound is 315 IBO which I draw at 60 lbs. It has approximately half the KE as the crossbow. My compound bow is impossible to shoot seated except to my left and my front maybe if I twist around. To the right, forget it. My compound has no optical zoom. I am positive I could re-draw the crossbow from my climbing stand. Main drawbacks of the crossbow are it's heavier, which means a bit less comfort walking in (I've never had a follow-up shot with bow--deer bail 100% of the time and run like mad). Mine is also as loud as an atom bomb, so even though I know it still hits very hard at long distance and will be accurate, string jumping could be an issue I suspect. It's very front-heavy also so off-hand shooting I'm not sure I could actually be any more accurate than with a vertical (I do have shooting rails, though). There can't really be doubt that modern crossbows are not more effective weapons, in most cases, to a modern compound. They are definitely much less fun to shoot, though.
  11. I used to be anti-lease also, buy used cars and keep them a bit. I'm leasing one car now I may end up having to buy out next year because I've been obliterating the odometer, but I'm not sure. At $.15/mile overage on this thing the fact is if I pay toyota back or I buy it and sell it in the future, I'm paying for miles one way or another. So the overage on lease miles is not as bad as it actually seems, it just makes the cost harder to hide than if one buys the car and sells a few years down the line. There is a big local dealer for nissan/toyota/chevy and they often post very good deals on their website. These are not loss leader, but true deals (I've taken advantage of them). A month back they were selling a 2017 Rogue AWD for $217/month lease, 12k/year all-in. That's no extra money. Show up, sign, $217/month. Right now they don't have great deals so the best they have is a brand new nissan maxima for $300/month all-in for 24 months. You go and buy a used car $300/month will get you one for about $14k after taxes over 5 years and it won't be under full factory warranty with all the new crap. So, it's probably still a slightly safer financial decision, but not by much. My new car lease addiction is a fairly cheap luxury
  12. Probably for the same reason you're going to use a crossbow when a rifled slug out of a 12 gauge is far more devastating.
  13. Check this out. I got this from slickeals forum. A couple years ago a bunch of us went to best buy before black friday and bought a specific TV for $300 or was it $350 using our citicards. Then black friday comes along and we already had known the tv was on a BF deal for $150. We used citi's "30 day price match", which unbelivably and stupidly even works with BF deals, sent the ad to citi, got the difference. I ended up getting a 50" tv for $150 and not standing in any lineups.
  14. My last few cars were leased. I got close to 0% rate on them and bought one out later and got another loan at 2.5% for another several years. At rates like that it just makes no sense to buy outright even if you have the cash. For a number of years now it's been possible to get incredible prices on leasing new vehicles, like $200-250 for an altima (or similar price/vehicle) without a penny out of pocket. New car, no worry about repairs, depreciation already comes out of that payment, etc. I figure the luxury of driving new cars vs an old one is costing me net about $100/month per car.
  15. These clowns opened the sale up early? Geeze. The site is a mess now it won't work properly.
  16. I had a hell of a time getting my scorecard account back yesterday online. Anyway I got an email this morning that today 1-2 pm only 40% off one item up to $50. I figured I'd never hit it but I went to the site anyway just now at 1:01 and both field and dicks are both shut down due to excessive traffic lol
  17. I paid $10 and got two DMPs. Are you saying I can show up and potentially get 2 more without paying another $10? I have one DMP left and an anterless, but the anterless is no use during gun season. Not that I really plan on getting all that many deer but still
  18. I don't pass on deer I consider large enough to bother butchering/eating, if I have a tag for them. Reasons: 1) I hunt primarily for the thrill of the hunt and also the meat. I don't particularly care about racks. I do have skull caps of the bucks I've taken, but I'm not (yet?) into trophy hunting 2) If I pass on a buck the odds of me getting a shot at it later at .00001% (maybe not that low). Yeah yeah "if everyone thought that way", except what I do doesn't impact the group nor the other way around. Tragedy of the commons phenomenon rewards those who act selfishly as long as the group at large doesn't; short of legal mandate, encouraging individuals who are acting in their own best interest but supposedly in the interest of the group results in little gain, whether it's deer hunting or any other resource consumption.
  19. Anybody who's gone to field & stream and given them their email gets regular ads to the inbox of various deals. It's still the only vendor I tolerate this from (because sometimes the deals are not bad). However, for two years now I've noticed they constantly advertise "up to 40-50% off" and it's a lie 99% of the time. Case in point "today" this crossbow for $150: https://www.fieldandstreamshop.com/p/barnett-recruit-recurve-crossbow-package-16bt2urcrtrcrv4x3abw/16bt2urcrtrcrv4x3abw?color=Black Regular price $299. That's just not true. I don't think they have sold this thing for $299 in months, and perhaps not ever. I've seen it for $179 maybe, it's always sub $200. Always always always. Their barnett crossbows are never, ever what they claim the normal price is. From time to time companies do get fined over advertising a sales price when the original price isn't real: https://www.nbcnews.com/business/consumer/fake-sales-trick-customers-major-stores-study-says-n366676 They do this with a bunch of other stuff also. This is my favorite example of them lying. This tree stand for $59: https://www.fieldandstreamshop.com/p/field-stream-lookout-15-ladder-stand-16fnsafslktxxxxxxtsb/16fnsafslktxxxxxxtsb "Was $119.99". Haha, really? This thing is always $59. Maybe it hits $69 once in a blue moon...? Anyone ever seen this for $70? Hell no. https://www.fieldandstreamshop.com/p/field-stream-hunter-hang-on-treestand-16fnsafshntrxxxxxtsb/16fnsafshntrxxxxxtsb?recid=Product_PageElement_product_rr_2_1393_&rrec=true
  20. I'll point out that the IBO speeds all are going to be at 350 grain total weight arrows, right? Whereas the crossbows will be lobbing heavier projectiles. As such the kinetic energy difference is higher than it may seem. I've read an article wondering if a compound will ever hit 400 fps. Argument being as you increase efficiency in the bow at some point you're mathematically limited by what draw length plus 70 lbs of pull can theoretically deliver. It provided a chart showing that over the past decade or two bow speeds have gone up at a massive pace but then virtually hit a limit a few years ago. The full throttle was the fastest bow 2-3 years ago, for instance, and nobody has has hit that since. I'm sure we'll see a 500 fps crossbow fairly soon because you can keep increasing draw weight until the cows come home and, if necessary, use a winch.
  21. Not me. I was out all morning then a trip to field & stream and a trip to mcdonalds that nobody here is going to mention to my wife meant I wasn't home until 2:30. And then I spent an hour (okay more than that) tonight shooting in the basement. So, no hunting tomorrow in the rain for me
  22. I actually measured it today. 18' to the bottom of my feet. This would be equivalent to a "21' to rail" ladder stand. When I was in a "15' to rail" stand last it felt like I was almost on the ground, though I don't know if deer care that much.
  23. dead here just strange. Gonna bail at 11:30 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
