  1. Also cops will, depending on mood and who you are, become rather inventive. If I was to, for example, have a locking knife I bought from Walmart in NY and it meets NY state law (which is in my view deliberately vague), and I have it as a utility knife, it's legal. However, if a cop stops me and decides that he thinks I have it as a weapon (and maybe he even grabs it not by the handle, but by the blade, and is able to swing it open with one hand), well I can be charged over it. And then since I don't want a big court case and $20k in legal fees, the prosecutor has me plea to a lesser charge, which I eagerly take. And so in the end I've been absolutely @*#(ed over by one of the worst justice systems in the developed world and there was nothing I could really have done to prevent it happening.
  2. I've gone last two years. Expensive. I will go again, though. I spent $250-300 last year and only brought in maybe 25 lbs of meat. Whatever comes out has no gamey taste at all, even the slim sticks which are (I think) 90% deer meat. Pepperoni is also good. I've only done kielbasas (lots), but I'll try another. I get the deer butchered at uncle charlies on harris road. $80 and nicely bagged up in two days. He also will make "sausage" out of the burger. it's still in burger form but spices and some pork added. Tastes really good and I'll grab a bunch more of it this year.
  3. And with that, we have unequivocal proof that the police department there needs a cut in funding. Pathetic use of resources. If a guy is so hard to track who's poaching a deer-overpopulated island you need to go to those lengths, let it go.
  4. I got some rage chisels recently for my vertical. I'll give the practice head a go on the crossbow. I got a pack of G5 Montecs I am thinking of opening up. My xbow is shooting somewhere in the 360's.
  5. Interesting. I will wait for more deets!
  6. This thread is several days old now and still no evidence of anything or anything official, right? Are we now 100% confident saying this is a hoax as most of us presumed immediately? Is there anything tangible beyond the initial, strange FB post? I still assert this would be in the news, similar to the story about the dog that we actually do know was hit with an arrow recently.
  7. I do. My summit viper climber is more comfortable than anybody has a right to be hanging in a tree. Comfy chair and padded back rest I do get sleepy. I spend a disproportionate amount of time surfing the net on my phone while hunting, so that helps keep me awake. So far I've only ever fallen asleep once for a few minutes.
  8. Dog could have been quickly changing direction to one side and hence leaning when the arrow hit, so there's no way to know for sure the person was below the dog. My guess is they were deliberately shooting for it. The dog got extremely lucky with that. Didn't hit vitals, nor did it hit liver or guts. Just super, super lucky (notwithstanding the fact it got hit, that is).
  9. I think a bow is a lot like golf clubs. The entry ones are not as good as the top-end, but in the hands of a good golfer the performance is much better than the best clubs in the hands of one who doesn't practice. You can change draw length and peep sight and all that, but any bow should fit most people. Basically when you pay $1k for a bow instead of $350 you get a very, very slightly faster bow. Maybe it's slightly quieter, etc. Vertical bow tech is not getting much better now, and the entry bows are similar to high end bows of not very long ago.
  10. Me, too. I have a minivan and it will haul deer like nobody's business, but now I am worried about a tick. Wrapping it up ought to help, though. Wrapped in tarp there's little to worry about and cheaper and packs up better than a $60 harbor freight carrier. Even with a carrier I think it is "tasteful" to wrap it up.
  11. They def need to allow 12-13 shoot an xbow. As is they can shoot a vertical. How many 12 year old girls can take a deer with a vertical bow reliably? Yes, some, certainly not many.
  12. Yes, like a boss! Actually not from hip, I just don't think I'd necessarily look through the peep at that range.
  13. Same one you use for vertical (if you shoot vertical)? Fixed? mechanical? I've shot mechanicals, but starting to like the idea of fixed. With the higher speeds from the xbow, I imagine planing problems from some broadheads increase, but a nicely shooting fixed (e.g. ramcat claims to shoot very well up to 400 fps) would open up some shot opportunities and I expect drill through a deer from basically any angle, even through a shoulder or two reliably.
  14. At that distance the 20 vs 30 won't make much difference. Certainly not the diff between a good shot and a clear miss. That said, my 20 yard is my 0-20 pin. It hits close enough in the pre-20 yard that I have no intention of playing mind games. If something is within 20 yards it gets 20 yard. If over 20 yards I'll start bringing the 30 into the equation. I've not tested much in short distances but I recall at 10 yards the 20 yard pin is bang on, and it's shooting an inch or two high at 15. At 5-6 yards I doubt I'd even sight the thing.
  15. Why did you buy a crossbow when a vertical gives you 5+ weeks to hunt? Also, entry compounds from good brands like PSE are plenty lethal. There's no need whatsoever to spend $1k on a bow. You can spend $3k on a rifle but nobody would ever pretend that a $300 one isn't plenty capable of harvesting game.
  16. Possibly, but how else could we discuss it? Others online have noted the same. Objectively, this is just a reality of any sort of hunting from time to time.
  17. Not sure to be honest. So many responses now i think a future poll would have to qualify exactly what the question means, as I suspect some are interpreting it differently than others. If I redid the poll I would say within the last 5 years and if you take blood and do not recover it as part of that initial event, it counts as a failure (i.e. wounding it but it lives I would consider a failed recovery).
  18. So after an hour of this I started thinking about taking a shot through the front of that close one but with the shoulder in the way at that angle it was too dubious. Had a buddy who was there try and get them to stand up but, as feared, all they did was sit there until he got close enough and then they both up and bolted. Oh well, it was better than seeing no deer!
  19. Ridiculous. 26 and 30 yards. No good shot. They came in the one spot I couldn't shoot st due to brush. 20 min now lol Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. No explanation. Sometimes I'm just damn stupid. That makes a lot more sense
  21. The guy there said he has sold some to people who are using it for "target practice". I don't think he believed it, either. They really are fantastic to hold. The scope hash marks are crazy close too. Nice scope as well. Even has txt on the bottom reminding you to keep fingers away from the string.
  22. $500?? I wouldn't sell out a buddy to get a felony and wreck his life for any less than $750! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  23. I would be surprised if this is anything more than a non safe compliant AR. He probably had a detachable mag with a pistol grip or something silly like that. My crossbow has a collapsible stock. It's an assault crossbow.
