Freaking love that movie.

Hahaha and he took it with a crossbow not a bow. Man this guy is a joke. Not because he used a crossbow but because he claimed a "bow" kill of a once in a lifetime wild deer.

I'm thinking one of 2 things you need to pick them up or just going to window shop...Either way sounds like a good time.

Best Gear that Surprised You

I have the butt hole out just as fast using one or not. Either way you still have to cut around it, the few times I tried mine it just tore leaving feces in the cavity. I haven't used it since. When I first learned how to gut a deer my dad had me tie off the hole and pull it through but that isn't necessary either, just cut around it then pull it out with the guts. With bucks I just pull nuts and all back up through the pelvic and out with the guts. -
Very true, I wonder if they got to keep all the meat and they just confiscated the heads? Hopefully they took it all I would rather the meat rot in a dumpster than these crooks benefit from it. That one 10 point was a dandy buck too, makes me wonder how many people are out there doing this and not only just during deer season.

It isn't for bigger racks it's for holding people accountable about the deer they shoot and getting a real number of what is being harvested instead of this made up number. Not to mention keep people from poaching.

If you hang a deer in your garage or don't get it checked and go to the processor you will get a ticket plan and simple. All DEC has to do is add a barcode and start scanning deer and aska few questions that would make people nervous. Now if you shoot a deer and cut it up that night you might be able to get away with it long as no one blows you in or DEC doesn't see you hanging a deer. I wouldn't care about throwing my deer in the truck and driving it to a checkpoint if I had to.

Yeah my FIL bought a mule and the hauling ability is what I want it for. The ranger is nice but the bed is a little small, I need something to haul firewood in and out of the woods. I'm thinking about one of those dumping trailers but full of firewood it would just push my 4 wheeler around. I want to get to the point where I buck the logs and split right there in the woods leaving the mess there and not in my driveway.

He isn't saying less hunters, there has been a supposed drop in numbers of hunters. What he is saying is the problem is dad and son going out and filling mom's and daughter's tags including their own. Meaning dad could shoot 4 bucks and son could shoot 4 bucks out of the same area when mom and daughter didn't step foot into the woods. It happens all the time especially in the southern tier.

So a little update for you guys. I have been working on a house re-model for a while since March of this year. I didn't pay much attention to the dogs while I was doing it but Sunday as I was installing my LVL's to open up our wall I had to use my framing nailer to attach the LVL's to one another and the dog just laid their next to me sleeping. Granted my framing nailer is pneumatic but still loud and has that similar snap to it when it goes off as the .22 and she had no issues with it. I'm thinking this might be a little easier than I thought it would be, she is a good dog and trusts me so I'm thinking this will be on the easier side for both of us.

FWIW I shoot the 350gr. hornady bullets out my muzzleloader. They seem to group well at 100 yards iron sights. I would imagine the 350gr. will wallop a deer pretty good. Unfortunately I haven't got to use one on a deer. http://www.basspro.com/shop/en/hornady-fpb-bullets

Ok thanks guys a lot to think about and try. I'll take her out in the back yard with my wife and I'll go up on the hill (70 yards away) with the .22 and fire a shot to see if it bothers her while she is outside. If so then I know where I'll need to start. A lot of times after I shot over her she would just come and walk glued to my side. Only once did she go back to the truck and that was because we were only about 30 yards away.
-
That'll be my next investment, I think I'm going with a Mule though instead of the Ranger.
-
I will say that all depends on the area. If i compared 8F and 8W 8F would have much higher chance of seeing and killing a mature buck compared to 8W same for doe.
-
She isn't horrible when I shoot the .22 near her she just doesn't like it T-storms aren't an issue. Pop gun noise don't really bother her. She doesn't run so much as wants you to pick her up. We went to the outdoor show a few years ago where they were doing the retriever training and all she wanted to do is sit in our laps. .22 is with her in the room and me outside the door.

Only thing I shot this year were doe, so it would make no difference to me.

Yeah I just saw that, if it is truly like that in other parts of the state then it would need to be tailored to certain areas or use a 4 point rule. Either way there are ways of implementing it to work.
-
I want to be clear that I'm not trying to single you out. I appreciate you responding to my posts and I'm not trying to start an argument with you directly just expressing my opinion on the matter. I wasn't sure if I was coming off as a D*ck. Really no matter what you do there are going to be a lot of pissed off individuals. It would definitely need to be tailored to individual areas if it is like WNYbuckhunter said it wouldn't do much in his area maybe 4 would be better but in all the yearlings would be given a bye for 1 season at which point next season they are free game.
-
I know it won't save all the yearling but the majority it will. Especially after the 2nd and 3rd year of AR's you will have a lot more people passing the "basket rack" 1.5 year olds with the higher number of 2.5 year olds. After the first couple years those that are "meat hunters" will also benefit being able to take the first 2.5 year old that walks in front of them with more meat on the bone than that 1.5 year old. There isn't any program out there that would save all yearlings you and I both know that. If you lumped the state together as a whole it would definitely save more yearling bucks than a 1 buck rule or something similar.

I get it stay@homenomad had a great idea and I wouldn't mind that either. If they are getting an opportunity at harvesting a 4 point or spike then they are doing something right and they should be able to kill a 3 on one side buck. I'm all for AR's if implemented correctly, I don't want to see what happened in PA when they were first implemented. Here is what I would recommend to DEC AR's 3 on one side No either sex put all doe harvest opportunities into the lottery to actually control doe harvests. 1 buck rule
-
I would be okay with that. I don't see where it would be bad thing after the first 3 years you would need to hold out for a bigger buck.
-
Yeah I heard that too, the only problem is I tried banging a couple pans together in the other room and she was not having any of that, this was about 4 years ago when I wanted to start training her. It wasn't even a gun and she wouldn't come near me. I have to say the pellet gun doesn't seem to bother her. The .22 is getting to her upper limit. I might just take her out with the .22 and start shooting tree stumps just to get her used to it. I'll keep her on a leash otherwise she is back at the house. I'll try taking the grouse and pheasant wings to keep her distracted.

What do you think happens in the Catskills? Not bagging an animal every time you go out or every season is the way it works. I hunted hard this bow season knowing I wouldn't have a lot of days to hunt I got skunked with one bad shot that I don't know what happened. It happens not everyone is going to get a deer regardless of what laws are set forth. I have hunted state land for a long time along with private land, do I prefer my private land yes who doesn't? I have had success on state land but you need to do your homework, state land isn't harder to hunt just harder to pattern the humans that hunt it and use it to your advantage. Either way you are going to need to put your time in it isn't an easy sport and I think people that first get into hear about all the success individuals have then expect to be able to walk into the field and have that same success fresh off the bus or not. This year was my first year hunting my own property I had no idea of deer travel, bedding areas or anything. Huge amount of unknown but I managed to kill a deer the last day of gun season. I hunted all season to get 2 shots about 80 hours total in stand to get 2 shots on a property I knew nothing about learning each sit I had. Not much different than what someone would have done on state land first starting out.

Was the red and black what was wired to the back of the switch? If so then yes wire nut them together.

I have a german short haired pointer, she is a good dog and a hunter the only problem I have is she is gun shy is there a way to break it? She is a really good hunter at our house we have about an acre and half fenced in out of our 40 acres without a lot woods access inside the fence but she has still managed to killed a grouse, rabbit, and a squirrel in what little bit she has access to. I'm not to happy with her killing them but she is just doing what she was bred to do. I have a few grouse around the house but I didn't think she was capable of actually catching one. She loves to point just about anything that moves, and I would love to hunt over her but she is very gun shy. I have never disciplined her for killing the animals actually just the opposite. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
