  1. Do you mix perennials with annuals often? I was thinking about doing this in the one plot in my thread. I would likely have clover then over seed with brassicas in one then do a LabLab, soybean, cow pea, and alfafa mix. Hancock's ultimate wildlife is close to what I wanted and may just go with that. Here is the Hancock Ult. blend Mixture Contains: LabLab Soybeans WGF Sorghum Sunflowers Iron Clay Peas Planting Rate: 25 lbs. per acre
  2. No i was packing up at sunset, that is when I had 2 deer come in and I sat there waiting for them to move on until 5 which I then got back to the house and unpacked by 5:30. I'm hunting 100 yards from my house basically my backyard so it is a 5 minute walk back at most. My gun was unloaded already otherwise I would not have pointed it at the deer. I'm a firm believer you don't point a gun or any weapon at anything you don't intend to shoot. You are probably right I didn't have my rifle unloaded at sunset but had no intention of hunting deer at that point and hunting coyotes if you want a cop out. haha I'll be honest and say I only clear the chamber and put the mag back in. This is only because I have lost 2 mags when going back to the house. I found 1 but the other one is MIA on my parents property. I know a lot of people that hunt till dark and do it successfully without hurting anyone but they also know better than to take 200 yard shots when you can't identify your target. Plain and simple a lot of things could have prevented this on both sides. But there is only one person at fault and that is the guy that pulled the trigger. I hope he doesn't have any sort of family they will be the ones to pay the price for his negligence.
  3. I'm also betting there is a certain amount of sq.in. are also required. I wear a B.O. hat and that is it but I'm also on private property and no one else should be there.
  4. Came out of the woods last night at 5 pm I had a couple deer come in as I was packing up and held up under me for a few minutes so I waited them out. By the time I got to the house unpacked and hung all my clothes up to dry it was 5:30 and dark. Even if he took the shot at 5 it is dark. I looked through my scope to see what the deer were beneath me at 20 yards and I could barely make them out. His life is pretty much over from a bad decision. I do see how he could have thought she was a deer at 5pm because all you can see are silhouettes and the 2 of them could have been mistaken at that time.
  5. You doing your own mixes? That was my plan, combine the seeds for the plants I want in my plot(s). Unfortunately a lot of seed companies have a ton of weed seed in their mixes. It costs more but all things considered you're getting a better product in my opinion buying straight seed.
  6. Unfortunately I'm about 50' from marketable timber further up the hill has nice hardwoods and a lot of them. The area I owned was all fields back in the early 1900s and since has let grow. The family that I bought the property and house from were original owners from 1906. The few oaks I have are smaller and I would like to keep them for forage. The ash is big but it isn't worth a crap anymore.
  7. Not that it is a good idea, I have seen guys use impact guns on the plugs before to get them out. He would have been better off having the guy shoot the gun then bring it back in.
  8. Sorry forgot to mention. On average right now I have about 8-10 deer living on or around my property.
  9. I should have much more light in those areas once I remove some trees. there is a lot of young ground growth so there is some light getting through once I go through and drop what I need I will use a light meter to see how much light they will get. I might size the plots down a bit to half acre and add another further up the hill. The biggest drawback is the further up the hill I go the less light I will have in the AM hours but might make it up in the afternoon. I was thinking cereal rye for a cover crop so the deer can still graze it before it gets killed off. That was the plan, I want to have all the trees hauled out so I can utilize them for firewood. Total acreage is 40.
  10. I would have to say the Redfield Revolution scope. I bought the 3-9x40 with the accu-range when they first came back. I thought for $110 I would give it a shot, low expectations for the scope but it has held up and is pretty clear up there with the VXII (Redfield is made by Leupold). Now you can't touch them for under $200, I wish I had bought 2.
  11. A big reason why I never wear my brown coveralls or bibs into woods. The only time I do is when I'm doing firewood even then I wear a orange or red shirt and hope the sight of the chainsaw keeps people from shooting me. Although they have those crazy bears that play guitars and banjos.
  12. So currently I have 1 small food plot about 75'x75' it grew great but I'm looking to make something that will draw deer into my property. It was the plot spike mix mostly oats and rye I did it mostly because I got the bag for $10 and needed something to do. Well this coming spring my plan is to get ahead and put in 2 or 3 larger (1 acre each probably a little smaller) plots. I have a nice area behind my house that I mow but could easily become a great early season plot. The other 2 places would be great late season plot locations based on travel and bedding areas. The picture shows where I was thinking of placing food plots based on available sunlight. My property has a lot of big maples with thick canopies so I'm pretty limited on where the light makes it through. I don't mind cutting down trees but that is a lot of time with the amount I would need to cut down. My plan was to use areas that already had natural ground growth and close to the apples trees already growing on the property. My property is a slight hill getting steeper towards the rear of the property. The areas in green are the proposed food plot areas. The one in the center is .5 acres the other 2 are close to 1 acre. The low down on deer and their travel routes. The deer travel up my portion of the hill in the AM and down in the PM some of the time they stay low on the hill about where my outer 2 food plot locations are and feed on the limited amount of acorns and greens. My equipment is limited to an old spring tooth drag, sprayer with boom and wand (covers approximately 12' per pass), and my ATV (Polaris 500h.o.) I would rather plant something that will draw them to the property and be a perennial but I included some that are perennials. Food plot selection: Middle Plot: My plan is to do a 50/50 white clover plot alfalfa plot. There is a field adjacent to house all alfalfa and the deer are almost always in it every morning and evening (even now after the frost has hit it). I was thinking about maybe soybean but not entirely sure how I would plant that or how I would re-seed every year maybe mow it down then drag it back in? Upper plot on map I was going to do a 50/50 Brassica/Chicory 1/2 acre of each. Lower plot on the map I was going to go with a custom mix of Grain sorghum, Lablab, cowpea. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
  13. Boly? Here is a good deal on a decent cam. https://www.bolyinc.com/store/trail-cameras/sg560x-12mhd.html
  14. No tangent I just used in the information within the survey you provided, all information pertinent being it validated or debunked (you be the judge) the argument that we should follow what the survey suggests because most were in favor. It just so happened that survey had other information in it that could provide information about the type of hunters that took the survey. I would be curious if they were to put out a survey again if the results would be similar. I took the survey and the questions gave you 5 answers to choose from if you choose definitely or probably that was above a "does not pertain", "most likely not", or "definitely not". Take from it what you want but you have to look at more than 1 question in a survey to get an idea of what is going on.
  15. Instead of an ATV look into a side x side. Worth their weight in gold when hauling stuff around.
  16. But you proved the point, where you hunted with less pressure there was deer movement unlike where there was heavy pressure. In a state land situation where you don't have a choice then it would impact you more.
  17. Haha did you read the whole survey? Straight from the survey; 39% of big game hunters who do not hunt with a bow “definitely” or “probably” would use one. So that would mean 39% that don't bow hunt would buy a crossbow and head into the woods. That means 171,300 (using this past years license sale info.) more people will be in the woods. Below I also outlined some of the other opinions of hunters that the survey showed. So if we are taking it for gospel then we should do all of what the majority of hunters favored. You can't pick and choose what you want to use in an argument when stating statistics. If you did you would be no better than the liberal media. That same survey has the following: Set mandatory antler restrictions to reduce harvest of yearling bucks during all deer hunting seasons (youth would be exempt) (57% good idea, 34% bad idea). Allow antlerless harvest only through the use of DMPs (45% good idea, 39% bad idea). Create a new muzzleloader season in the SZ that only allows harvest of antlerless deer (45% good idea, 41% bad idea). In WMUs where the deer population is too high, make part of archery and muzzleloader seasons antlerless-only (55% good idea, 27% bad idea).
  18. Not really, it means more hunters=more deer pressure more deer pressure=less deer movement.
  19. You could do a fixed mag AR platform, that would get you a .308 or other calibers. I'm not sure what calibers are available but I know in the last 5 years they have a ton of different barrels chambered to all the popular sizes. Add a folding stock and the 2 removal pins it could get pretty small. @WNYBuckHunter Is a little more versed on what is NY legal, but I'm pretty sure long as it has a fixed mag it can have any accessory you want short a silencer.
  20. Very true. I have a feeling a lot of kettles calling the pot black.
  21. Easy there, you can be hunting coyote and fox at night, last time I checked you can be hunting coons too. This guy was reckless and should be dealt with accordingly, but don't shun everyone that enjoys hunting at night for other species.
