Levi used to be a nice place to fish until the Amish came in and raped it. My buddy has Amish bordering his 300 acres and between the Amish and my buddy's family that 300 acres has about 5 deer a year on it.

Looks like one of the Martin brothers to me...

In 8F This weekend I had 3 8 points near me. The biggest going about 130" and the smallest I would say around 120". They were no longer in their bachelor groups, the bigger 8 made 3 scraps and was pushing the smaller guys around but no fighting and no chasing. The youngest looked like he was trying to chase one doe but she wasn't having anything to do with that. In 8Y I haven't saw any rutting activity nothing chasing, haven't saw any real deer to speak of lately other than a 4 point and couple doe. Unfortunately my buddy shot the only doe on his property about a week ago and since I haven't saw any buck activity.

What is your favorite smoothbore shotgun slug ammo for deer
chas0218 replied to LJC's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Anyone use the rifled slugs in a rifled barrel. My grandfather last year asked me to go out and shoot his 20 ga. 870 with smooth bore. I did and it shot great. Got back to the house looked at the box, I was shooting rifled slugs thru the rifled barrel. I asked him if he knew he replied "Yes, those others are too expensive and it shoots just fine." How do you argue when he is right. Now it will lead up faster but he might be taking 3 more shots with it the rest of the season. 1 or 2 to make sure it shoots for him then 1 for a deer. He bought the barrel around 14 years ago (nice hastings barrel) and never had an issue with it leading up just cleans it good every year. For what it is worth he buys the cheapest slugs he can find generally the remington sluggers or winchesters. -
Do you notice less hunters now then 10, 20 yeaes ago?

This year is a tough one for me, my wife and I are expecting our 2nd son and she has been having a lot of trouble this pregnancy and has needed more help, might be because our son is 22 months old and raising hell everywhere he goes and she just gets exhausted. Chasing him around is a full time job let alone when your 23 weeks pregnant. I try to keep my sits short and during peak times. I can't say I haven't seen deer just not the one I'm looking for. The next 3 weeks are going to be tough for her as I will most likely be in the woods almost every evening. -

Depending on the season. In the southern tier gun central NY (8Y, and 8X) it is like WW3 when the sun comes over that hill! My parents property (8F) I see very few bowhunting but gun season still hear quite a few shots during gun season but these shots all sound like they are coming from the same properties every year. -
Not trying to be smart but it isn't about the number of cameras. You need those cameras to be in an area that is home to a mature deer. If there isn't a mature deer in that area you won't get a picture of it, there has to be be one there. State property is tough because the majority of people have the mindset "If I pass him (being a 1.5 or 2.5 year old buck) the next guy will shoot him." Unfortunately there are too many people out there like that. My entire family used to be that way until I killed a 5.5 year old that no one had ever saw. Ever since we have killed numerous deer that are 5.5 yr. old or older. We own 180 acres that spans over 1 sq. mile along with neighbors that will not take small bucks (120" or less). I hunt "mature" bucks because they are harder to pattern, harder to sneak up on, just harder to hunt in every aspect. I love it when someone challenges me deer hunting or not. I challenge myself every year to out do my best. When I do it's the most rewarding feeling, I can't explain it but I'm proud. I do have to say that it is a huge adrenaline rush to have a big buck walk in versus a skippy doe or button buck.

LIVE from the woods 2016 Edition! - 7th Year, lets make this happen...

Freaking worked last night twice, I'm not superstitious but will be carrying them the rest of the season. -
Yeah same, I hunt over an overflow pond that had been dry, I'm wondering how full it's going to be. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

Sorry I missed it, I'll have to keep an eye open for more of your posts. I actually searched for Julian Assange, nothing about elections. -
I'm tempted to sit saturday and sunday, not sure if it will be my "rut" spot or not. I leave this one area alone because it is small and I only have 1 set, I'm thinking of throwing up another stand near by.

They won't until the 1st heavy frost turns the greens to a brown color, the sugars get trapped in the leaves and are quite sweet to the deer. It is an awesome late season plot if there isn't better forage in the area. They will eat it throughout the winter. -

So it's alive lying there? Got your bow with you? -
Gotcha, I have had those "perfect" shots go wrong. The best thing for someone to do is practice and know their limitations. I know everyones' limitations are different so a perfect to me won't be the same for you. It is difficult to know where someone is coming from just by what they type I can't type what I feel is a perfect shot as I don't think you can either you just know what they are when they are presented. I would also like to mention that for me there are multiple perfect shots. I would be lying if the only perfect shot was slight quartering away 20 yards on a slight downhill grade. I made what I thought was a perfect shot on a buck 4 seasons ago. He was hard quartering away slightly point to the left, I put in front of his left rear hip and it exited out the chest cavity in his right front arm pit. I took out the fermoral artery, liver, right lung and bottom of the heart. He piled in 20'. It was literally a perfect shot it hit everything but his left lung. The link below shows the photos, I won't post because they are a little gruesome without the hide on. http://s782.photobucket.com/user/chaston0218/library/Hunting Season 2012

Yeah I read a little about that, I think it needs many heat cycles to do that...I think, but I'm no expert. Thanks, I'll look into them. No 5.56 military stuff, my dad has a lot of brass and it's free so instead of throwing it out or scrapping it I figured I could make some .222 brass out of it. Not to mention it is becoming harder and harder to find rounds and not the cheapest caliber on the market.

What that you can't control all the variables such as the deer and the uncontrollable variables compounding? Yeah I got that, so in your post you wouldn't shoot at any deer because of those variables you can't control? To each their own I guess, you don't need to make a perfect shot every time only when you need too (like when it's raining). There is a saying it's better to be lucky than good.
-
Tag says his son had a good time in the rain, must be they shot at something?
-
I was looking over the summer and ran into the same problems. They had 2 offered within an hour and half but were filled. Doesn't seem like there are many offered. If I took the PA one would it allow me to get my trapping license in NY? They used to honor bow and hunter education certificates.
-
I don't either but if it was raining then I would want to make sure the the deer isn't going far. I have no problem taking quartering towards shots but in the rain knowing that it could wash away blood on a long trail I wouldn't take that shot. I would want to take a shot that almost always guarantees a short track. I have hit deer single lung and some seem like they go a mile but on the other hand I shot a deer single lunged and it went 30' before bedding down and dying.

Winner! haha that is 2nd funniest response to him other than the other guy replying to all his posts with "giving him the finger" emoji. -
I used the hunter-ed site that the DEC site redirected me to. https://www.hunter-ed.com/

I am in central NY on the southern border. I am located just south of corning near the PA border. The closest in NY is 170 miles away.

I wanted to get into trapping but I have not be able to locate any local trapper education courses in NYS southern tier area. How do they expect someone to drive nearly 170 miles for an 8 hour class. Does anyone know if I can get a certificate from Pennsylvania and be able to buy a trapping license in NY? I have PA classes offered within 30 miles of my house.
