  1. Deer in my neck of the woods are moving late. I was in stand packing up when I had a doe come thru no big deal just going to wait till she left. I did then heard a deer grunting through the woods behind her at that point it all I could see with the thick canopy of the pines was a body outline. At that point I thought I would try and see what it was so I grabbed my flashlight and grunt call and started grunting back. He responded and I snort wheezed holy crap all hell broke loose deer started running all around me chasing each other every different direction. I was trying to turn the flashlight on quick to get a look at a couple big bodied deer they just kept running all over and I never got a look at them. To say the least it was pretty exhilarating.
  2. I don't just personal preference. I shot one a few years back in bow season and the fawn was next to its mother nudging her to get up as I approached. I just can't do it anymore. I'm by no means a bleeding heart but listening to that fawn bleat at its mother while hitting her in the belly to get her up was too much.
  3. What don't you have in your backyard? haha
  4. Just a thought, not sure if they would work or not. Neat concept and for the price if they work I think they would be worth it. http://www.redsgear.com/aimshot-heatseeker-black-hs3510b.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&scid=scplp14061702&sc_intid=108991&gclid=CjwKEAiA6YDBBRDwtpTQnYzx5lASJAC57ObM8TcSZeVQ9ZO8woe94Bkh_3T8lds-oDCIit08WQgjNBoCHYnw_wcB
  5. From the tree stand, get with the times you can order stuff online. Yeah I bought it a 3 years ago I think maybe 4, you can't beat Walmart's return policy.
  6. I know not many people like shopping on that black friday but wait until then to buy a scope. I bought one over at Bass Pro Nikon pro staff BDC 3-9x40 for $125, I think you can order it too on black friday. Not sure what other brands are out there I just had one of those already and really liked it so bought another. I know it isn't a Nikon but I also have a Redfield and I think the glass is just as nice or better than the nikon. I would go to a brick and motar and compare the 2 side by side. They also have a nice little circle with crosshairs, see below.
  7. I don't ever blind call except rattling. If the deer are chasing the only thing that will bring in a buck is a snort wheeze and I wouldn't do that unless I actually see the deer. If I hear something that sounds like a deer sometimes I'll do some tending grunts but that's about it for calling blind. I have never been a fan of those cans, I have seen them actually scare off deer. If the doe is in heat you better believe she isn't calling out for a buck he will already be there and the deer know that.
  8. One of the main reasons I plan on buying the CAT S60 cell phone. It has a built in FLIR imagining camera. Will work awesome for insulation jobs too. Do you think any of the blood would show up on the camera if looked for shortly after the shot? It would be nice to find those pin head drops of blood.
  9. If it is one that I have been after and hunting hard to get him, I usually loose it. Between the adrenaline and the joy of finding the deer the moment is really indescribable. Close to the joy of holding my kid for the first time, it is a moment etched in my memory forever. Those mature deer really get my blood pumping, I can't wait to share the experience with friends and family. Between knowing I outsmarted the smartest deer in the woods and putting food on the table it is a great moment.
  10. So I have been hunting this one buck nice tall 130"+ with split g2's, No good trail cam pictures but he has been chasing a doe around the property. Last night he was over by this small pond area I don't usually hunt because the landowner usually hunts that area during gun season. He has a food plot on the other side of this hill to the south of me he hunts for bow. I have saw this buck once and managed to get a shot off but hit a ghost branch I couldn't see just before sunset causing a clean miss. I have been hunting the area pretty hard but with good wind so the doe or buck shouldn't know I am around. I am considering moving a little to the south in hopes he runs past me or something but I will have no ground hunt over tall golden rod I do have an old climber, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking of grabbing my very heavy climber and throwing it up just to get a possible shot at this big buck. I was thinking of heading to my father's property for one last hooray but knowing this big guy is still around and chasing I want to give it a shot this weekend possibly. I will be over there tonight with a SE wind I am hoping my buddy hunts his bow spot as the wind will be blowing right towards where the deer were last night.
  11. That's one impressive lens. Nice little blind too Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
  12. I have thought about spraying the area around my stands with permacetrin throughout the season in hopes to keep the ticks away but haven't committed yet. I do spray my yard for the dogs and kid. Haven't had a tick in my yard for sometime. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
  13. You and me both, unfortunately next week I don't think I will be hunting much after work with the time change.
  14. Where I hunt in 8F I have never had one. We also hang them in the barn usually so when the body cools the ticks find somewhere else to go. In 8Y and 8X where I hunt I just sit in the tree and I have them crawling across my arm or hand.
  15. Why not I shoot the steps to their tree stand off that's what I do! They look like a mouse that is cornered, not sure whether to jump or try their luck with the steps! Just kidding guys, but back in the day when my grandfather was my age he used to take his chainsaw and cut a notch out of the tree, usually on the side of the tree they need to climb. He said no one ever came back for their stands.
  16. They are worse than CWD they kill everythying and have no regard for posted signs. The worst part is they all look the same so it is hard to ID them unless you catch them red handed. I'm not sure how they press charges on a guy that doesn't have a driver's license.
  17. My 03 Silverado has 97k on it and the cancer is spreading pretty bad throughout the rockers and above the wheel wells. The local Macquire dealer swears by one of those things that hook to your battery supposedly if you have it from when the vehicle is new then it covers any rust. I think it is has something to do with the electric current running into the body.

    Rut!

They said with this new moon cycle it will be earlier, I haven't seen any chasing but definitely earlier and more pronounced than last year. I shot my 6 point on the last weekend of bow, and he was chasing the doe something hard. I also shot my 10 point the 2 week of gun chasing a doe it was close to those first 2 weeks of regular season that was the peak rut from the activity I saw.
  19. Haha yeah I figured it was the 6.0 diesel but still wanted to ruffle your feathers a little, my buddy has been a die hard Ford guy and I like to get under his skin when I call him out when he used to have a GM powered mustang.
  20. Sounds like he did it right put a Chevy motor in ford! That Cummins must be stock or in need of some work if the ford smokes it, I have seen some pretty wicked Cummins on stock turbo and a tune. But the belt issue make sure it is routed correctly I watched a belt eat itself on a ford in 3k miles because the belt was routed wrong over one of the tensioner pulleys. I was surprised it even ran correctly.
  21. Buck is chasing momma stay on high alert buddy, good luck. Had a fawn do that last year just before my nice little 6 point came thru 10 minutes later.
  22. Have you pressed charges? Tell him if he is on there again you will be calling the police and have him ticketed for trespassing. We had a guy that figured because it he had permission to hunt an adjoining property he could ride his ATV across ours the corn was up and didn't want to walk thru it. My grandfather caught him and in a nutshell "never want to see you over there again or else". Never saw him again. You need to take the stands and leave a note. I had some people that thought they had a brass set walk up to my house and demand to give them back stands. I tell them I would have if you came and apologized, but now they are mine. After they loose a couple hundred dollars in stands they don't bother. Pressing charges usually works too. Our family has gotten a reputation for being jerks on the block but you can only put up with so much.
  23. Probably the smartest kid in the special class!
  24. Just scouting with his crossbow on private property. The audacity of some people is ridiculous.
  25. My wife and I both run a TRU Ball Scout. Mine wasn't a bone collector when I bought it but it the same release. I like how mine falls out of the way if I'm climbing the tree or something. I don't like the idea of a string and prefer the webbed strap it gives it a little more rigidity. I have considered a thumb release but I don't like how it isn't connected to my body, I also don't like the single fang style. I would also opt for the buckle over the velcro. I like my velcro but if you ever need to take it off every deer in the county will hear it.
