LIVE from the woods 2016 Edition! - 7th Year, lets make this happen...
chas0218 replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
I'll be hitting the woods this weekend around my home then the weekend of Halloween I'll be in the woods at my parent's property. The deer should be ramping up for the rut at that point at least I'm hoping. -
I hunt in the rain, if a deer I'm looking to shoot comes by it needs to be the perfect broadside opportunity and I should be able to do the rest. If I do my part they will be dead in seconds after the shot. I have lost 4 deer in 16 years either bad placement or no blood. Never lost a single one in the rain granted I haven't shot as many in the rain but none lost.

My buddy has a set of boots like those, he swears they are the best boots he has ever owned.
-
Middle picture definitely looks like cherry to me and bottom looks like beech. Below is an example of cherry tree bark Beech tree bark:
-
Top picture looks like beech or ash. Middle some cherry variety. The deer will hammer the hickory nuts if nothing else is around. Is the top and bottom from the same tree? They don't look the same to me.
-
Used mine to take a deer at 355 yards. Pretty cool to be able to shoot that far but realistically it would be more useful on a muzzle loader or shotgun.
-
Haven't heard nearly as many as the years past. With the warmer temps I would imagine they will start migrating later.
-
You might have! haha good times.

I haven't seen any new rubs from this year yet but I have seen some bucks with larger necks so they are tearing something up. I have a bunch of new scrapes that popped up in the last week. I threw a camera over the biggest one it was the same spot I saw 7 bucks all walking together. The bucks are getting ready but all the does in my area still have the fawns so I am thinking we have another week maybe 2.

That was all my wife's idea, I just wanted the thing to go bang! I'll tell you 3 lbs. of Tannerite makes a loud bang.

Thanks guys, this was our official announcement to everyone other than immediate family and her co workers. We weren't trying to hide it but we had some trouble before our first one and didn't want to have to go through and tell everyone if we had bad news. My dad and I were talking hunting last night and if my wife doesn't get right back into when the youngest is old enough grandpa will have a little hunting buddy. I figure the oldest might be able to sit a couple hours in a tower stand next year...hopefully. He'll be almost 3. My wife and I wanted another boy our first has been fun (I think that is the word I want to use) he keeps us busy. All said and done they should be a little over 2 years apart, my wife wanted to be done by 30 so she got her wish at 29, I will be 31 by the time the 2nd one comes I was hoping for 30 but things didn't quite work out. Either way I am hoping by the time I retire they will be on their own thinking about their own kids. We can't take credit for the signs, my wife is a high school math teacher and the art teacher made them for us. I am somewhat artistic but not talented enough to do that. I think she banged them out in a couple hours.

LIVE from the woods 2016 Edition! - 7th Year, lets make this happen...

I hate full moons, I pulled into my hunting spot and guess what 3 doe and 3 fawns just hanging out eating in the lawn. Had no ambition of moving even after I pulled in. Decided to just walk in and spook them. Been sitting for a half hour no movement yet. Really warm this morning at 58°. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk -

No deer yet in 8f was hoping for a turkey at least, wind is picking up looking like a disappointing sit if it stays like this. -

Hung a new set about an hour and half ago hopefully it pays off, saw 7 bucks walk right under the tree I hung it in so we'll see. Just hope this wind stays out of the SE. Congrats guys on the morning kills! -
OK thanks guys I'll give it a shot, my dad shoots a little of .223 and find a ton at the ranges. Locally I haven't found a good source for .222 brass so this is a nice alternative. I was thinking of upgrading my dies to carbide do you think that would help or is the carbide mostly for longevity? Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

Spitzer bullet for hunting anybody use them for deer
chas0218 replied to LJC's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
If I'm not mistaken the Hornady SST bullets are spitzers with ballistic tips. My wife's .243 loves then the .270 will put 3 inside an 1", the .222 throws them out to 200 inside an 1". I have killed deer with them but the .270 likes the boattails better. I tried boattails in the .243 there wasn't a notable difference so I stick with the cheaper Spitzer bullets. Cool crisp morning in 8X had some frost. That bright moon last night got these deer moving early, spooked 3 on the way to the stand at 6:15 Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk -
I did look into annealing and although I didn't have any fancy fixtures I feel as though what I did allowed me to resize the brass easier annealed it. From what I have read annealing shouldn't effect the gun only the brass by extending brass life , by softening it. From what I have read annealing only softens the brass to allow easier re sizing and extend brass life. Not many people anneal brass anymore. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

I tried to use the least amount of lube possible, I have a lube pad and rolled them. Should've resulted in a light film, I'm using Rcbs dies but no matter what I did it seemed like they all dented like that if not worse. If I fired those dented ones or the ones that were worse you don't think it would have any ill effects? All have been cut to length according to my Nosler manual. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

So you're saying I shouldn't keep using the Superformance powder for my .270 I measured out of the Superformance round? I have been doing it for years with no over pressure signs and getting the same velocity they list on the package. Not saying anyone should do it but a couple local guys did it first and I went to the range to see for myself. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

So I took my time and heated the cases a little and this way the end result. Would you guys be worried about heading the case? I had to get out pretty warm not top the point it was melting but warm. It cooled fairly quickly while I was working it in the die. The ones standing up on the right have slight kinks/abnormalities I can barely feel with a pick. Would you guys reload the brass and see how it shoots? Only thing I really did wad reshape the shoulder and trim the length. Dummy round cycled fine with. no issues Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk

I saw the Jordan symbol on the bottom and wondered how much they were worth. Seems like a few of my students are into Jordans and they have shown me shoes that they want. I could buy a brand new rifle and descent glass for the price of those things. -
Sure did, he is the neighboring land owners his brother. The land owner has tried to apologize for his brother on numerous occasions, if he didn't almost kill someone and was just something minor I would accept it but putting someone else's life at risk there is not an apology big enough in my book. People like him don't belong in the woods, common sense goes a long ways. When it comes to other people I don't pass judgement or fly off at the mouth unless I'm really antagonized. I'm pretty mild mannered but my wife and father said they have "never seen that kind of anger from me". I was pretty ticked to say the least.

He didn't shoot it but likes walking around the house looking at the mounts saying "Buck Buck" Here are some fishing pictures of him. In the next couple years he will make a good deck hand. Some geese we whacked last year.
