I recently downloaded that book from scribd.com, but haven't read it yet. Looking forward to it. Was bummed to find out snares aren't legal in NY state, so hard to practice. Not sure about deadfall traps.

Some viewers of the video are alleging (in the youtube comments) that the squirrel had its back leg tied to a string, and that they actually jerked it back/held it up while the rock fell on it. I watched it again in slowmotion, and and am not sure. Even if so, maybe not with this type of trap, some sort of deadfall trap should be able to work to catch a squirrel, I would think.

Groupon has cancelled the deal, apparently. I received an email saying to contact customer support. I did, and they had no clue asking me to forward the email they had sent me back to them. I have to assume they will cancel the groupon and give a refund.

I'd suggest you get a gas powered whole house generator with an automatic switchover. That way, if you lose power, you are automatically back up in less than 60 seconds and you don't have to refuel it every few hours. The thing you are looking at allows you to connect a portable generator to your entire electrical panel. The thing is, a portable generator won't be able to power your entire panel, and or for not a long time before running out a fuel. If you are going to go the portable generator route, get a heavy duty, like 12 gauge, 100' power cord to connect to the portable generator. Connect it to your gas furnace with a "pig tail", your refrigerator and a couple floor lamps in one or two rooms, and maybe one additional appliance at a time like coffeemaker, computer, etc. Really, that's all you should expect to run on a portable generator for a few days.

No matter how many natural disasters we have (Katrina, hurricanes, blah, blah, blah) people never seem to learn the reality of life that in the event of a natural disaster or area-wide emergency, you can't rely on the government (or utility company) to take care of your basic needs. You need to be self sufficient. My two cents. Keep the change. My story. A lot of folks may remember the famous ice snow storm that hit Western New York in October 2006. I was on a week long business trip in California when it hit. The first two days, my wife and stepson relied on the fireplace for heat, which really sucked. I was able to somehow get a flight back via JFK (Thank you initial Jet Blue agent for hanging up on me as I was pleading for a flight back to Buffalo). My wife and I then drove down to Cleveland to buy a portable generator and 100' heavy duty power cord. Got it set up in the backyard. Neighbor wired the furnace to it, (I was mechanically useless at the time) and we had the gas heat going. I then flew back to California to finish my business trip. Our street was one of the last ones in our neighborhood to get back power. We were out for over six days. Afterwards, my wife's favorite words for the next few months was "whole house generator". Once spring came, I had a Kohler 12KW one installed. At the time, it cost around $12k to install. It can run everything except only one of the two A/Cs at a time. Since we've had it installed, we've only used it a few hours. Every time there is a power outage in the area, I keep hoping our power goes out so I can get my money's worth.

I'll be curious to see what they do with their gun department. Based on what they are (were?) selling online, I was encouraged. With all going on with D**ks and Walmart lately, who knows.

Have you tried snaking it out? Who knows how far down the drain pipes the clog is? I think it would be money well spent to have a plumber come out and diagnose the problem. You can then decide if you want to tackle the fix yourself. Right now, you may not 100% on target as to what and where the problem is. Marty Hall is my plumber in NT. Some tips I can remember from the presentation that some might find useful: If you do a grid search for a wounded deer before you call deer search, it will take the dog a while to figure out which scent it's supposed to follow. So not saying don't do it, just saying be aware that will delay the deer search process. Don't clean off the arrow. Mark where you last saw the deer. If you can, stay in your stand and guide someone to the spot, rather than you walking to where you think the spot is. Once an hour has passed, it is OK if it rains. The scent will stay in the ground enough for the dogs. If you have bone fragments on the arrow/where the shot was, you have a leg shot. You should push the deer to make them bleed out. Don't wait like a gut shot. (This one was new to me.) Make sure you answer all of their questions completely and honestly. They are like Sherlock Holmes figuring out what happened, with the right information. Remember they are volunteers, be respectful, patient and thankful for their time.

Nice presentation. I should have brought my distance glasses to better see the projector slides. Nice group of folks. They talked about the history and process of deer search, a fair amount about figuring out what kind of shot you have based on hair, etc. and when to pull out and when to push. They also had A LOT of great stories. Unfortunately, I had to leave before it was finished. They talked about membership options, including associate memberships. I will need to look into that. It sounds like a worthy and selfless cause that benefits all hunters.

I went to the gun range today and sighted in new scopes for my .204 (0@50 yards) and .22lr (0@25 yards). Hoping to go out for some coyote hunting in March. Looks like I won't get a shot at small game hunting till later this year.

Dyna Sea , 2.5# package, from Walmart (purchased last year). Made in USA. I first went to the Walmart website to get the brand name, but it looks like they now have a different brand. (I fished out the wrapper from my trash to get the brand name.)

Do you add any beef or pork fat to your venison burgers? I do one or the other, or both, depending on intended use. The reason I ask is if pork fat is in it, I'd be a little nervous not going to 155. (Might not apply to you, but if someone reading were to try to replicate recipe, and used pork fat in the mix, . . . .)

What temp and for how long did you do in the sous vide?

I made imitation crab salad. Yeah, it would look better on a sliced croissant with lettuce and tomato, but like it with crackers. If you are interested, my recipe is here
