  1. Itching to shoot the bow.

  2. I saw this article just now, and, having read this thread earlier this morning, I thought I'd share it. The article discusses advancements in trail cams, but it doesn't discuss "affordable." I thought it might help in balancing the decision between affordability and technological advancements: http://www.outdoorhub.com/stories/2016/02/10/cell-phone-scouting-cameras-taking-hunting-to-the-next-level/
  3. Solid advice on the cost / quality ratio. The $15 baseline helps when comparing costs of local shops with reviews of their services; it's an easy place for me to start the research. Thank you.
  4. Being that this was my first year bow hunting, I'd like to bring my bow to a shop for experienced hands to tune while I learn more about the mechanics and develop confidence with the mechanisms. What should I expect to spend, and are there different levels of bow tuning that I should be aware of? Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated...
  5. The fellas and I celebrated with a pre-show backstrap with onions, garlic, jalepeño peppers, and pear. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  6. Yes, it would be surprising. Some might even say unthinkable.
  7. I wonder why we think of light as a limit, instead of a barrier, or a step.
  8. Thank you for the kind words, grampy. Don't think I'll get around to coyote this year, but in the years to come...
  9. 35 years and only two hunting. My family didn't hunt, nor did they encourage an outdoor lifestyle. I'm the black sheep in that regard. Always loved the outdoors, and finally dedicated the time to get the certificates. Started bow hunting this year, and harvested my first two deer with arrows. I have much to learn and am looking forward to the years ahead and building a tradition for my branch of the tree. I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  10. Thanks very much for sharing, grow. It's great to learn more about the living thing to which I strap my stand and myself with confidence and appreciation. And... I need to learn more about forest management. The property I recently acquired looks mostly dead on the ground.
  11. NY Senator Kathy Marchione ® and Assemblyman Dan Stec ® paired up on legislation that amends and/or repeals many aspects of the NY SAFE Act. SB 1556 / AB 2391 http://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2015/s1556 This legislation is dead on arrival in the Assembly, however.
  12. Wow... I haven't experienced anything on that level of severity, but I have developed allergies as I've aged (I'm 36). I grew up with a cat, but now can't sit on a couch if a cat sleeps there, nor can I be in a cat owner's house for more than an hour or so. My parents have two, so I guess that says something... My uncle, a nurse practitioner, told me that it's likely environmental (I haven't lived with a cat in 18 years) combined with aging. My Spring pollen allergies have gotten worse over the years, but I've been able to mitigate those reactions by using local honey as a sweetener throughout the year. I'm unsure if eating a peanut, or part of one, a day or week would be advisable. A quick google search for "adult onset allergies" didn't yield a ton of helpful information, and according to this article, it's a relatively new field of study: http://allergicliving.com/2014/11/20/searching-for-answers-to-adult-onset-allergies/ Here's an even more general article: http://www.everydayhealth.com/allergies/understanding-adult-onset-allergies.aspx Best of luck and health to you, FL...
  13. Nice buck! Enjoy the bounty... Real pleasing to share with loved ones.
  14. I think someone posted somewhere else on the forum a link to an article on deer canines... A quick google search gave me this short article: http://www.northamericanwhitetail.com/news/weirdwhitetails_wt_ww1201vampire/ Great looking skull, and great looking photos, too...
  15. From what I understand (my neighbors across the way use satellite internet, and I think it's Hughes Net), the download speeds are okay, but the upload speeds rely on your copper phone lines. And then distance from the hub, and traffic on the line play into speed as well. That is, upload speeds are usually slow. I decided on another option when TWC asked for 10k to run a line (on poles) 1/4 of a mile to the mouth of my driveway. I purchased a cell phone booster, and then added a hot-spot to my data plan. 15 gigs between four of us, including phone, and it's fine. But... we don't watch videos, nor stream radio or music. We just browse the web, pay bills, order items, and work when needed. Speeds (both upload and download) can be LTE or 4G based on the type of booster you get and the signal strength between your antennae and the tower. All in all, I think it's been a better option than satellite for us.

  18. I had three experiences just like that this year. I screwed each one up. The one I had with a buck at 10 yards, I thought the sound of my heart pounding against my rib cage spooked him.
  19. That looks great, and I think it's an excellent way to commemorate the experience... Is this a hobby, or do you also do the work professionally.
  20. Thanks for the info, Dom. I thought about what I'll term the 'relative' factor after I posted last night. That is, one area's ability to pay out $300 is relative to another area's ability to pay, for the hypothetical example's sake, $800. And if the fines are localized, there is probably much leeway in a judge's discretion. But then I started thinking about all the costs that went in to purchasing the gun (could be a family firearm), the ammunition, the gas to drive to and spotlight the deer, and then to be hunting out of season and without a license, and I'm still thinking that John C. Kingrey II got off easy at $350. 24 is old enough to know that the act is illegal, unethical, and that the plan is to not get caught. Maybe there's more to the penalty that is unlisted, but at $350 and no apparent forced behavioral correction, such as community service, nor impounding of vehicle used in a criminal act, I'm unsure if it's a disincentive to repeat the act. But... Who knows? I wasn't in the courtroom. Could be he's connected... Could be he's struggling financially...
  21. Does anyone know if the fines are set by state statute? I feel a letter brewing... I'm all thumbs when using Tapatalk
  22. I'll have to take a look at the links on the right hand side of the page, but it seems - judging by the titles of the links alone - that the City of Oxford is taking a proactive, citizen driven approach to deer management within city limits. At face value, the community should be applauded for taking advantage of hunters as a resource. Here in NY, however, I imagine that state government would find fault with a community attempting to codify its own rules with regard to deer management. It would be helpful for the state and localities to partner to advance a beneficial culling of deer in needed areas. I would like to be able to participate in a program that links landowners to hunters in urban/suburban areas with the mission of educating landowners of how hunters can benefit herd management efforts, and educating hunters on the community's specific requests. Working together, cooperatively... What a concept... What a dream here in the Northeast.
  23. "• John C. Kingrey II, 24, Fordham Hill Rd., Hermon, charged 9/25/15 Town of Russell, Hunt Deer without Big Game License, Possess Loaded Firearm in a Motor Vehicle, Take Deer with Aid of Artificial Light, Take Deer during Closed Season. 11/16/15 $350, $10 Judge Friot" Wow... You can have your car impounded for less.
