  1. An owl hooter can work awesome to locate birds. I use them constantly when pre season locating. Look at the Harrison Hootin stick. James Harrison just got first at the Grand Nationals in Nashville and it's not the first time., he has a you tube video out that shows usage, the laugh during owl calls gets em best. Remember keep your calls short, Midwest turkey supply sells the calls as does Hooks custom calls. You can buy the call in multiple woods fairly inexpensively or go even cheaper n get synthetic
  2. I just posted in the turkey section almost the same question. Not many's gonna give up spots. Takes time, gas, legwork n getting up early to listen
  3. Good luck bud. Bad time of year to ask that question. You gotta drive around before season n locate birds. Not many will give em to ya. Check any accessible spot, start looking for winter flocks in Feb, follow them through March n when they break up you'll know areas to find them. Now you gotta locate individual birds, hopefully a bunch for back up plans case something/someone spoils an area, to rest areas and to hunt new birds once you've killed one. Sounds like work? That's why guys don't give em away. You can sit n call blind but that's not as much fun as knowing they're there as you sit waiting for daylight. Good luck n start lookin
  4. Pygmy, I saw guys mentioned round but the op didn't seem to consider it. It's what I was sayin
  5. I don't get it, why isnt the 300 win on your list. Pretty simple choice. Great round
  6. I want to add I'm affiliated with no stores, call makers or orginazations other than the NWTF/NRA. This isn't about any profit, I want nothing in return
  7. Ok guys seems Bill is doing a very nice thing trying to pass along info. Hope everyone is appreciative. Many years ago turkey knowledge was hard to get, even guarded., I'm wondering what kind of calls you all use and if you undrstand conditioning pots? How to get the two note yekp from a pot or box? How many know to not pick up lid or striker? How bout scratch boxes, cane calls or other yelpers? Understanding why/how calls work can add to sucess and enjoyment using them. Obviously we need to understand the best calling done at the wrong time is useless or worse. To add to Bill's generous offer if anyone needs help with calls, calling or where to get good ones for a reasonable price (not the stores btw) let me know. You all can pick an afternoon or I can help my best through here
  8. Saw someone mentioned longbeards, the loads are crazy tight. If you ever do use them Id recommend sights. You said 20 gauge, if you're gonna spend money, try the federal heavyweight 7s. They're same as 6 lead n offer insanely dense patterns.
  9. Baiting in NJ is legal, but imo unsporting. Never heard of the night hunts n I thought bow hunting was allowed there. It will run the gamut n if NJ is at an example, they'll try the sharpshooters, contraception, etc as was already stated n than let you have at it. Towns aren't paying for this forever n the deer regenerate. NJ towns/parks once off limits are now actively seeking hunters even posting signs n putting articles in papers
  10. A reason to own the DSD instead of Avian is DSD is made here.
  11. Also equipment is checked for safety.
  12. If it's an international course they have to honor it. I know NY doesn't like straight up online courses. The online stuff we have in NJ exempts you from the field portion of test. You must still take an actual written test n pass your discipline courses. Example bow/firearm. I didn't give you a yes or no because I don't know what Pa. Teaches. You can come to Jersey though and be done with everything in one day, save the workbook you do at home. If it's not too far Itd be worth the trip. We do classes in Vernon which touches Orange co. Club is called cherry ridge. You must bring a bow if that's her discipline, 5 matched arrows, and be proficient. 3 out of 5 arrows in a deers vitals at 15-20 yards. Myself n most of the guys are archery certified instructors n if she has issues I'm sure she'll get more than a fair chance n help. But she must be proficient. Firearms is only about safety but she'll need to shoot. Classes typically start in March and you can walk in. Springtime classes less full
  13. Courses that are used internationally including NY, NJ and many elsewheres. The IBEF stand for international bowhunter education foundation for instance. It's given differently but the information is the same n transferable
  14. Try the federal heavyweight 7s. Great pattern n it's kills birds dead
  15. I think it depends on the hunt pressure and how many guys use them as to effectiveness n what spooks em. In my area I've seen cheap decoys blow em up but not once DSDs. That being said you honestly don't really need em
  16. An international course is an international course no matter how it's done.
  17. No spillover in Jersey, the unlimited doe harvest I keep hearing mentioned has decimated the herd. Warwick is crawling with deer
  18. Buckmaster7600 gave the best answer. No one I know would switch to slug gun for those exact reasons,

    NewJersey

That I referred to area, North central has very few deer in comparison to other areas. Also worse access. Hence the average guy w no where to go hits the water gap causing hunter saturation to allow higher bear harvest. I see 6-8 a day just walking to my truck some days n don't live near the gap. Biologists now admit the highest bear denning is in West Milford. They're not coming from 20 miles away to nap

Just a fyi. Northwestern NJ is not the best part of state. North central is. Look to any show you see, it's the same two towns in the news. The bear biologists are using harvest data to determine densities n thus conclude the water gap is it. Totally ridiculous. This area of the state
  21. Feeder gives the impression all is well. The look out type stands higher if you hunt in grass. The breeder can disappear if you hunt mountains or hills n it rolls
