I've seen lots of posts where people think warmer weather will get birds gobbling better. I've been doing this since the 80s n personally I prefer a cooler morning as I have never lots of gobbling on real warm n especially humid days. I have had plenoy of gobbling when it's in the high 20s even. The very best days though for me came after an over night thunderstorm that stopped just before first light. This is no debate just wanna hear what you think n why so many guys like warm days. Also what are you all considering warm?

I've used QAD drop aways with multiple bows, zero issues. I will say on a bisquit the one thing I've noticed is the wear down n to the side. If you watch for that n replace when necessary I don't think its a prob but I'm keeping my drop aways

Didn't take it that way at all. Like I said only a suggestion to show off a deer better n only my opinion.
-
No they aren't even mine. I just pulled pics up as I was in bed when I read the request for ideas. Again only a suggestion that straight front on angles may not be best
-
I don't feel a shortened season will do anything. Limit harvest but let guys hunt. If you restrict things too much time wise they might just quit.

WNY I went to school n competed. Your work looks very good. Pics are great too. You're doing the right thing
-
I'm not calling anyone's pics lousy, just saying take a few more angles n see what they like

Work looks great!

I'm no photographer but I did do taxidermy full time. I'm seeing lots of pics deer, bears, etc. head on. It can make the head/nose area look oversized n doesn't imo show as nicely. I'm sure you're all proud of your mounts and the work done. Maybe take some pictures quartering towards the deer from the way it's turning. Id bet you'd get more of the affect too. Not criticizing anyone or their piece. Just another idea if you'd like to try

I agree the herds can come back. Btw I feel it's relatively easy to tell bucks from does even shed horn. Maybe you know this but they walk/stand differently.

Great mindset Growalot

Just my take on it. In Jersey I lived in an area that went QDM. I was doing taxidermy at so obviously Id see some of the better bucks. Within years of the institution on QDM the bucks I was getting in my shop from these areas increased substantially. Not a scientific approach but real world experience. Now on the other hand I had a few farms w bombers pretty much always on em. They made those zones unlimited antlerless deer. Now besides pounding does, button bucks and drop horn bucks were harvested. The seasons run in some areas from Sept to Mid Feb. it's decimated the herds and the bucks are gone. Hard to find a rag horn there now. 51% of fawns born say biologists are buck fawns. Add this stuff all up, you'll see why Id rather hunt NY

Study Casts Doubt on Theory That Legal Hunting Reduces Poaching
Bowguy 1 replied to EspressoBuzz's topic in General Hunting
Guys understand something studies are only samples of some outcomes some of the time. I'll at the risk of offending give a simple sample with my saying not whether I agree. Only a study example. If you did a poll (study) about same sex marriage. You did it in Grenich village, sorry if i butchered that spelling, anyway say you sampled that area, or even lots of new york city for instance you get overwhelming support for it. Now say that same poll (opinion study) was given in the Bible Belt would the outcome be different? Support for hunting, weigh city against country folks. Now say they say they took a random sampling from many areas, again just ask the right people n you'll get your desired answer. -
Let em grow let me explain the way I see out of wack populations. I could be wrong but it's something to consider. Take deer, people always mention the "peak of the rut" like its gonna be magical. Truth is it normally sucks in areas w out of wack Buck/ doe ratios. BUT the Bucks don't actually care about does, only does in or coming in heat. Imo the best time to "rut" hunt such places is early or maybe later when the buck to doe in heat ratio is highest. Now turning it to turkeys it's the same thing. At a certain time that tom will be kinda lonely with no or few hens around. If he's been having the time of his life n he gets single he may go nuts for a bit. When that happens they normally stand there gobbling as adverstement in an attempt to bring back the good old days. Be there you're in.

Maytom you're right it's gotta change., hate to hear of all the rough days for ya. Good luck this week

Everyone has different ideas in rifles. Mine are geared toward one good shot. That means bolt action. I used to hunt Cranberry lake w a 700 in .270. To be honest I think if I had to get a rifle now just for the big woods n weather that accompanies it, Id get a synthetic stocked gun. I might actually look at a Tikka. I've shot em n they seem great. I'm am partial to my Sakos but they're heavy when humping in. Calibers would be anything midrange. Gotta have some snot though. I've never subscribed to the heavy slow bullet theory.

Chances are it is a buck it's the speed of the animals hormones that tend to cause Buck droppings to clump more. What they are eating also determines if the drop more pellets or clumps. In a heavily wooded area the pellets are more likely to be loose if grazing . This can also tell you food sources. If you're seeing lots of this in woods could be a leafy food source you need to find.

Did you ever consider a canoe? Way more stable n you can sit more comfortable imo
-
The guys form was horrendous. The bow was too long, because the bow was too long he could not release properly. Watch his hand ride up when loosing an arrow, should be straight back. Draw length too long is not good for shoulder. Also hand did not seem rotated. Your elbow needs to be down n to the side. Not aiming straight down. Another sure sign his grip is bad is the arm guard. Not necesary with proper grip. Pet peeve of mine is bad information claiming to be informative.

Guys who mention decreased populations n I do agree they're way down from years ago but in the areas I'm in it's beginning a very slight upswing. Not by you guys?

Grouse you said it perfectly!

Why do you find turkey more exciting or as exciting than deer hunting?
Bowguy 1 replied to Bowguy 1's topic in Turkey Hunting
Deer hunting is easier for many. It's cause they may not know where to start. How many have stated no one showed them as kids just in this thread. Deer you can sit in lots of places n get em, they're visible n follow routines. Turkey follow routines as well but the routines often change. Gotta learn the animal than learn to call plus how/when it'll react to calling. What to do when it doesn't, lot to know. I liken turkey hunting as sort of a chess game where you can't see the opposing players pieces. Any other calling of game I've been involved in you commonly see the animal n can tell if you're calling is working. Not so w turks, more often than not you can't see them n by the time you do you should prob have stopped calling already -
I've not noticed it worse than years last. It gets better n worse
