My draw length measured 28-28.5 when I went to a range/shop last week. The only thing I'm not exactly sure on is draw weight. The rental I was using was set at around 40lbs as it was my first time shooting a bow and the guy said it would help me focus more on form and not get tired. 40 really felt like nothing. I'm not a huge framed guy, 5'9 180lbs, but probably on the stronger side, rather than weaker (aren't we all?). Throwing up olympic movement weights is moot since drawing a bow is a whole different set of muscles I know. I've no interest in pulling insanely high draw weights just so I can boost my e-penis size but at the same time, if I could hold a heavier weight without issue, no reason not to. I should probably try to test it out in real life though...

the guy at one of shops was pushing the diamond sb-1 over the stinger quite a bit even though it was a cheaper pkg ($525 all setup with sights, rest, quiver plus arrows, release and case). I've heard mixed comments when it comes to super adjustable models, mostly with a spongy feeling at full draw.

The drawbacks of location. You folks upstate may have a lot of shops to try out but here it's rather limited. Big box stores and just a handful of small shops. I've been to the main two that everyone mentions and there may be one or two less "famous" ones to try out.

If I knew where/who it was coming from or if it had some sort of warranty behind it, yes.
-
I've no issues buying from a pro shop for a slightly higher price but it just seems at the price ranges I'm looking at they only have the super entry bows (Stinger, SB-1) as all their closeouts are sold. From my understanding the Brute Force and Threat are in a somewhat higher model class so if I can get those at a comparable price then I figure that would be a better deal.

Looking to pick up bow hunting in 2017. Already spent a bunch of money on rifle and other hunting stuff the last few months so I'm trying to make it a budget rig purely for hunting. In the price range I'm looking at ($3-400 for a RTS/RTH pkg) I've got it down to the following: PSE Brute Force Bear Threat Diamond SB-1 PSE Stinger X What are peoples' thoughts regarding these? I dropped by a few pro shops to see if they had any used bows but it seems most don't like to deal with them and don't carry them. I wouldn't mind buying used if I knew where it was coming from or if there was some sort of warranty but not really keen on taking a flier off some random guy on CL or ebay.

I've had FIOS for a few years and luckily haven't had too many issues with them. I do think FIOS internet is a whole lot better than cable (Time Warner, Cablevision etc.). That being said I know I've got a fight in front of me as my current agreement is coming to an end and it's time to renew. My gripe with FIOS is they offer new customers ridiculous deals but play stupid hard to get games with existing customers. Hopefully I can find a rational rep who will work with me instead of forcing me to cancel service and then sign up as a new customer again...

So what's on the agenda now that hunting is over
uberyan replied to rob-c's topic in General Chit Chat
I've poked around there a few times. Seems most of the things that get posted for sale are above the price/quality range I'm looking for. I put down a fair bit of coin since late summer when I bought my rifle setup and all my hunting gear so I'm trying to keep the bow stuff as budget as possible. -

Stalking some bows on ebay as I'm pretty sure I'm going to try my hand at bow hunting next season. The rifle season is too short and rifle regions too far for me to be able to put a good amount of time in. In the immediate future, pick up the belly slab from the butcher and prep a porchetta for Christmas eve dinner. Other than that, business as usual. Work, gym, try to be a good father and husband. -
My deepest condolences Buck.

First season in the books for me. Buck tag went unfilled as I never got to see one. I'd say my biggest mistake/learning experience was being too creative with terrain. Underestimating gradients on topo maps and thinking I could just charge up from the opposite side and bring death from above, only to find the slopes to be steeper than I thought and the deer weren't even there. That ties into another mistake, not getting out more frequently in the earlier part of rifle season. Hunting small plots of state land, should've know the number of available bucks would be limited. By the time I wised up and just started hunting the lowlands into the wind and seeing deer, the bucks had already been taken. Really cool experience getting within 50yards of does without them ever knowing you were there. Still had a lot of fun, got a lot of exercise charging up and down the slopes. Can't wait for next season.

LIVE from the woods 2016 Edition! - 7th Year, lets make this happen...

Well karmas a bitch after all. Haha. Got my scope steadied on four different deer. Unfortunately they were three does and a fawn. No dmp for me and really only going for bucks so no luck. Ran into another hunter in the parking lot. He informed me a total of 5 bucks had been taken since rifle opened. Considering the size of the plot I figure that means ain't much left so not sure if I'll be giving it another shot tomorrow. Really didn't see any reassuring buck signs. -

Let's see if posting first brings me luck. Heading out in 4z. Hoping third times a charm. Karma owes me since I got a weak speeding ticket on the way up. Wish me luck. -
I've got a SOG fixed blade for rougher cuts around bones and tougher tissues and a havalon for more precise dressing/skinning. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to use either of them (this be my first season) except to test them by shaving my arm hairs (which they did beautifully).

I'm thinking of getting into bow next season. Guess it's time to prepare for another 8 hour class, ugh. I like rifle but it's a pain to get to areas where it's allowed for me. Figure I can use bow close to home and more frequently and save the rifle for more big woods kind of trips. Didn't realize how pricey compound bows get. Even the budget packages are not much less than what the rifle cost me.

Trouble shooting my 30-06. 308 less kick?
uberyan replied to Al Bundy's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
.308 and 30-06 are close enough that it will greatly depend on the rifle itself IMHO. I've shot the M1 garand in 30-06 and it felt fine even with a wood stock without a recoil pad. Whereas the M1a Socom in .308 had a noticeable messy feeling kick. I use a ruger bolt action in .308, very lightweight synthetic stock and recoil doesn't bother me at all. As someone else mentioned, if you like your current rifle I'd look into an upgraded recoil pad or muzzle brake or combination of both. Tried a Sako bolt action in 308 with a muzzle brake and it felt like a plinking gun. -
I was always under the impression that with wild venison, only the lean meat has good flavor and all the other bits like fat and bone will make it taste worse. Am I mistaken? I've always preferred bone in when it comes to beef although I think they've done studies that show it really doesn't add any flavor in terms of steaks.

Y'all making me feel bad for deciding to stay in today. Legs just too tired after yesterday's 8 mile loop through steep terrains. Next week will be the last hurrah. Good luck to all and be safe. Anytime you come back home alive it's a victory. -

Congrats rock. I took the day off from work to go up north for a late late morning attempt. Wind was blowing from the west. Unfortunately the only parking spot I know of is on the west side of the forest. Figure I'll zip across and work my way back. Of course I take too long investigating every rub, scat pile, and trekking up hills that end up being steeper than I thought. Finally decide I gotta stop this half assed stalking attempt and need to just get to the east end so I still have time to stalk back. So now I'm just zipping through crunching leaves all fast paced not caring. Not even five minutes into doing that and all of sudden I've jumped a bunch of bedded deer and I'm getting mooned by 3-4 white tails that just zip up the slope that I had just so carefully come down from. Judging by the scat they left behind I'm telling myself they were just does and definitely not one big buck in the mix. Thats my conclusion and I'm sticking to it. First time out saw nothing. this the second at least I saw some booty. -
So why do these kinds of accidents not happen during bow season, or do they? Is it a simple matter of distance? I honestly don't know what the average distance between shooter and victim was in most cases but considering the majority of deer taken are under 100 yards. I know JMP and Upstate mentioned something like that almost happening to them during bow season, but I don't recall hearing much on actual accidental shootings. This is not meant to pit bow hunting versus regular. I see the merits in both. I might take up bow just so I don't have to try to cram so much travel in a short season.

This is my first hunting season... I am unsure how many more I'll be able to enjoy if this idiocy continues...

Anyone able to get the State Land Interactive mapping to work? I've tried from multiple browsers and it always times out without loading. thanks.

I've just worn a bright orange hat the first time I went out but am having a bright orange vest expedited before I go out this weekend. Modern tech has to have some kind of answer for this dilemma no? Like a light beacon or something that humans can clearly see but deer would be oblivious to.

Assault? Really? That's all they're charging him with?
