Airgun Squirrel Hunt At Stewart State Forest
Elmo replied to 13BVET's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Oh, nice! Congratz on the pistol permit. Yeah, I was thinking of spending well under $100 because I really don't have any money this year. Yet, some how in the end, I ended up spending over $200 for it. Funny how that works, huh? -

I wasn't really into airgun and I'm still not but I figure it wouldn't hurt to have one laying around to plink at pests or what not so I decide to get a simple one that's small and compact. The pumper really works out my arm. It'll help me get/keep in shape too. -

I'm game. I bought a Benjamin multi-pump (.177) over the summer and want to give it a try. -
I missed such an easy shot my first attempt that I knew something had to be wrong. A quick practice shot at a rusted beer can confirmed that my sights are an inch high. So the rest of the day I was just aiming to give them a crew cut. With the bullet an inch under where I was aiming, I was blowing out their jaws. Hollow points do some serious damage. Also, I have my 22 sighted at 50 yards but I'm starting to realize that all my shots are more like 25-30 yarders. When I re-zero, I think I'm going to zero my 22 for 25 yards.

I never tried the stepping on the tail flap method because someone had told me northeastern squirrels tend to have tougher skin and going with this method may cause a mess. You know, I'll just give it a shot next time. If they explode, I'll love one squirrle. Heck with it. Worth a shot.

Back then, if you messed up it's because you were dumb. Now if you mess up, it's the government/corporations fault because there weren't enough proper warning labels. People in the 80's weren't dumb enough to put piping hot coffee between their legs while driving.

9/11 will always be a special day in my life. My brother joined the military as a result of it. I volunteered for the Red Cross immediately after the event. Months later, the Red Cross decided that this operation required it's own entity and I was asked to be part of the original team to create the 9/11 Recovery Program. In the course of the program, I met so many wonderful and kind hearted people who were dedicated to this country and helping those in need. From 9/11 I saw the world at it's worst but it also bought out the best of Americans.

Thanks for the great insight, Mike.

It can only help to have a mentor. I started started just two season ago and I'm pretty sure I can be labelled as having a strong desire to learn. I've bought and watched 4 different instructional DVDs. Read 3 books on general hunting and 2 on deer specific hunting. Logged countless hours on youtube and on this forum. But when you step out into the field, you're on your own. So if you accidentally misunderstood something but don't realize you had misinterpret something, you'll continue to commit that error out in the field all the while thinking you're doing everything right. And since no scenerio is the same, when a deer gets spooked just to use as an example, you might not realize that it was that error you have been making that was spooking the deer. Secondly, even with the helpful hunters on this forum, you have to know enough to even ask the question. Asking which is better, A or B, you would first have to know about A or B. You may not even realize that those factors even need to be considered but an experience hunter might notice it when looking over your setup and point it out. There are time when at the very least, I just want someone to shadow me and point out what I'm doing wrong or right.

Coming here as an immagrant in 1980, I had to grow up poor in some pretty harsh neighborhoods. So when I talk about walking miles to school in the snow with holes in my shoes, I am not exaggerating. Now, my nieces get pampered and I find myself giving them the hard old days stories already. My brother and my parents do everything for them. I remember when I was 12 years old, my dad gave me several hundred dollars in an envelop and told me the electric bill is due today. Go to the ConEd office and pay the bill. When I asked where was the ConEd office, his response was "Go find out. Why do I work so hard to send you to school?" So I checked the phone book, called the office, checked the bus map, took the bus, and paid the bill. Now, my nieces are 17 and 13 and we still do a lot for them. When I asked my dad how come he does so much for them but when I was their age he made me do everything myself, he simply said "Times have changed."

Yes, I bought supersportsman and yes, it came with it. I guess I got lucky and bought it at the right day.

I get spooked when I hear the "Friday the 13th" theme music echoing in the woods.

Doesn't it come with your archery tags? I bought my tags in person and it came with it.

Oh, them crows are going down! What hand calls do you recommend. I use electronic call and it worked for me but I want to learn how to call them in by hand. I bought the Haydel's Triple Tone Crow Call (Model TC-87) and it sounds nothing like a crow....until I went down to Florida and heard the crows down there. I guess the crows down south have a southern accent. The Haydel's sort of sounds like a southern crow.

Tornado hit mainly Brooklyn and Queens. I live in the Bronx and then went to a party in Midtown. I got just a lot of rain and it pretty much was only a drizzle by the time I went out for the night. Steve was closer to the action.

Welcome aboard. A 3rd coming this November? Hunting will be tough this season, no?

Dry but hung over. Thanks for asking.

I was told to start out low then move into your comfort weight particularly once my body strengthens it's "archery muscles" over time from shooting. At this point, I seem to be pulling 53# pretty easy. Sort of curious to see how it feels at 60#.
-
Ha! Good to know. Wedding is in January.

My bow is currently set at 53# at the moment and it's what I've been practicing with. I want to move it up to 60# but is afraid it'll change things and I don't have time to resight it so I've kept it at 53#. Would going to up 60# change my zeroes or not enough to make a real difference?

Thanks, steve for your suggestions. I'll definitely look into it. I don't read as much during the fall due to hunting and gym among other things. I also didn't read as much when I was younger (more drinking and women chasing back then) so I'm sort of catching up.
