  1. I tried hunting predators for the first time last year starting with a Fox Pro caller. That didn't bring the desired results right away so I tried sitting over a bail pile. Then the action picked up! Yotes, foxes and fishers all made visits. I missed 2 opportunities on foxes and never caught up with any yotes. This time around, I'm better prepared, but wonder what others are having success with?
  2. Drove past like 80 deer grazing in a farm field as I left Brewery Ommegang today. Now I know where to ask for permission next season!

Technically, I was Chrisrmas shopping...at Brewery Ommegang. Left to right: Lovely, Dark & Deep (x2), Valar Doeharis, Grains of Truth and Gnommegang. My awesome (and incredibly attractive) bartender was also kind enough to give me a pour of their new Barrel-Aged Adoration. I may be in love!
  4. Lost a shooting stick to some thief that took it from my ground blind. Other than that, I'm squared away.
  5. If you want to take the word of some random batsh^t crazy woman waving a rifle around that isn't even her property, then be my guest. Having more than two brain cells to rub together, I would not.
  6. What a great tribute to your Dad. My sincerest condolences Buckmaster.
  7. It's more than that. This woman came storming in with the rifle, a magazine and ammo. Given the context of her behavior, I don't know how any reasonable person would view this as "entertainment" and not as a criminal threat. S 120.14 Menacing in the second degree. A person is guilty of menacing in the second degree when: 1. He or she intentionally places or attempts to place another person in reasonable fear of physical injury, serious physical injury or death by displaying a deadly weapon, dangerous instrument or what appears to be a pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun, machine gun or other firearm; or 2. He or she repeatedly follows a person or engages in a course of conduct or repeatedly commits acts over a period of time intentionally placing or attempting to place another person in reasonable fear of physical injury, serious physical injury or death;
  8. You could file a complaint with law enforcement. Dick's will have that entire situation on video to use as evidence for making an arrest. I'll take a wild guess that local LE knows the family well.
  9. 22 hours of hunting this weekend and not one deer spotted. I don't regret the small one I gave a pass to earlier in the week, but I'll have to wait til next season for a shot at taking my first deer. Plenty of time to reflect and regroup. Congrats again to everyone who had success. Your stories inspire me.
  10. Good luck everyone. I'm finishing up my coffee then heading in for the first of two all-day sits. The chilly temps and calm winds in 5R set the table for great hunting. Absolutely determined to harvest my first deer.
  11. Loving this weather change! The fresh coat of snow showed 2 deer moving behind the house just before I walked out. They moved into the land I can't hunt so I continued to my stand a half mile away. No more than 20 yards from my destination I catch two pairs of eyes glowing back at me. I froze and they kept walkin...right under my stand too. Lol. The day's hunt isn't over yet.
  12. In two seasons the only deer I have seen were the ones I helped my buddies to drag out. . But today, I finally had a deer in the scope! Fast mover from left to right and behind a mess of thick cover. When it hit a clear spot, I could see it was just a small doe or BB so I gave it a pass. Try again tomorrow!
  13. I'm not going to get much sleep this week. This bruiser is going to have my full attention.
  14. The same doe you pass on today might get hit by a car tomorrow. Harvest what you choose. Those DMP's are offered for a reason.
  15. I'm very happy with my LW Alpha and sticks. Stealth Strips, some bicycle tubing and accessory rope do wonders to make this system silent. This is my first year using the LW and I'm just scratching the surface of its potential.
  16. Scouting and preparation (be it gear or skill set) is what you do to make your own luck. Personally, I've accomplished a lot of goals with sheer mental tenacity and time.
  17. They arrested the hunter and charged him with assault. http://wnyt.com/news/state-police-say-they-have-made-an-arrest-following-the-shooting-of-an-encon-officer-in-columbia-county/4330924/?cat=10114
  18. I have to agree. If this couple accepted your services with the expectation of you being allowed to hunt the land in return, then it's time to send them a bill. I don't know how some people look at themselves in the mirror. smh
  19. For those who have gone the fixed mag route, how have you gone about it? I just clicked the DD's Ranch link above and saw they sell a replacement mag release lock and an extended rear takedown pin. Is that (potentially speaking, not asking for anyone to render a legal opinion) all I would need to modify a new lower to make it "Compliant"? Sure would be nice to use an AR style rifle for predator hunting at night instead of a bolt gun. However, I have no desire to share a cramped one bedroom studio with a roommate named Bubba for the next 5 years.
  20. Finally saw some brown today! Nearly walked into a doe +1 more in the thickets right behind my house at 5 am. Later in the morning, something (buck?) came to my 9 o'clock about 50 yards away behind a mess of trees. No visual, but I heard 3 'snorts', but no wheeze? Wasn't sure what to make of that and was in an akward position as a lefty trying to turn full left. Rookie mistake, I flip the doe bleat can trying to coax this thing 20 yards closer into an open spot. It takes a casual hop to its right and is gone. So that makes 5 solid days in the woods without getting a scope on target. I'm bummed, to be honest. Going On Call at work for the next 10 days and dread it.
  21. This. I got lucky and found a once worn pair in a Cabela's Bargain Cave for about $35 after all the discounts and such. I forget the model, but they are basic non-insulated ones with camo uppers. My Mucks are easily one of my favorite pieces of hunting gear. They are lightweight and not like the blocky Herman Munster boots you get with most winter hunting footwear. I'll wear two pairs of wool socks with toe warmers thrown in for the really cold days/nights and my feet stay plenty warm. The only downside is that sometimes I have ended up on my backside trying to navigate some icy trails on a decline.
  22. No action, but plenty of sign. Headed back out in the morning and will sit til a deer drops or the dinner bell rings. My view from the office today,
