  1. Last thing on Wheeler about 8 years ago Ben Cherington's father in law who was a white sox scout told me Wheeler had all the tools to be a big star but anyone who watched him could see that his arm would be a problem long term. Long story (kinda long) he was right in every category that he spoke about when it came to young pitchers (not just wheeler). His daughter Mrs. Cherington also ran the Hudson Valley Renegades at that time and I had a chance to take a amateur scouting job that paid zip. I passed on the job but always remember what he told me about Wheeler.
  2. Jarred Kelenic is a beast. Dad is a coach he is a true five tool guy that was sold off after being a first round pick. Cano's comments on Diaz before he ever put on a mets uniform were telling. Once again I want to cheer for my team but there are major pieces that seem to be in the wrong place. I watch a ton of minor league ball and follow the mlb draft in depth, Kelenic seems like the real deal.
  3. Kill the grass off. For me that was the answer instead of planting one crop. If your planting in 5h that's where i do my plots and how i have had luck.
  4. Wheeler at almost 24 mill a year is just too much. Big talent but big injury history with an arm angle that is begging for another injury. Mets will miss him but no thanks at 5 years for 24 mill. He was all class and I wish him the best. That said the Mets are trying to dump Familia and Lawrie apparently for salary relief. Ok cool but what will they do with that relief? Mets aren't close at the moment and the lack of talent in the minors will be exposed in the coming years. It's not a fun time to be a Mets fan.
  5. This is Powerplant from WTI. They don't produce pods but create an immense amount of late summer early fall forage. The year I planted Powerplant my deer numbers on camera doubled. Im in a low deer density area so this plot made it until frost killed it off. I top seeded radishes about six weeks after I seeded the Powerplant and it came out great. Forage wise that's been the best combination I've had in four years of doing food plots. The beans hid the brassicas and allowed them to survive deer browsing much longer then any other brassicas I've planted.
  6. I think it all depends on when you do your bulk of hunting, when do the deer need the food source most, when will the deer be attracted to the food plot you put in. If you are more into bow go with clover, the attraction of a good clover in fall is great and it will save you time and effort if you frost seed. Mix in some wheat or rye as a later season source and you have an easy to plot green manure field that you can flip in a couple years into beans, corn or brassicas. As Moog said the clover will put nitrogen into the soil and the rye or wheat would suppress weeds and add a food source even if it snows. If the soil is crappy radishes have worked awesome for me. Btw all my plots have been done with an atv tow behind tiller and it takes a bit of time but it has worked for me.
  7. Close doesn't count in hunting. Should be able to get out tomorrow for one last shot on state land in 3m.
  8. How beautiful! Only squirmed away for a couple hours and saw nothing, not even a track but I had state land to myself again which seems to be more and more common as the years go by.
  9. How are the breakfast links? Either that or pastrami venison for me can't decide.
  10. Wish I could get out tomorrow, good luck to anyone headed out.
  11. Dad got his first buck in years. He hunts to spend time with me and had only a couple days at camp after coming up from Florida. Gave him my climber and put him in a spot I like, he shot this four point at about eight a.m., was our last hunt of the year together so I couldn't be more happy. Second buck at camp this year between he and I. I still have my buck tag so I might sneak out to state land the next couple mornings in 3m looking for Mr. Big who keeps making all the rubs I've found.
  12. Can't recall seeing a state land deer this size in the area I'm hunting.
  13. I hunted the last three days hard on state land 3m. In the past three days I have seen at least 30-40 rubs some very large from this year most looking like the last couple weeks. Yesterday was the only sit I didn't see anything so I decided to change it up and hike straight up the mountain as high as I could go. At about 3:30 I heard a shot that seemed to come exactly where I was sitting yesterday, all week I have had the mountain to myself and was unaware somebody was in there today (parking lot empty when I got there). So I did see a doe at last light but didn't have a shot and didn't want to drag a doe a couple miles with meat in the freezer and a couple weeks to go. At about four o'clock I caught a glimpse about 350 yards downhill of an orange vest and on my way out a truck pulled in right as I was arriving. Long story short small world my brothers friend shot a 10 point in the exact spot I sat yesterday doah! Young guy deserved it, he hunted bow in the area and to my surprise when he saw my suv he accessed the land lower so he wouldn't screw me up. Really nice young local guy so good for him, he said there is a huge 9 point back in the same area so I will go back to that area when I have the chance next week. He said he was going to send me a picture when I get it I will update what could have been.
  14. Stateland in 3m. I found about ten of these, I've been in my spot for 45 minutes with something running past me.
  15. Sinus issues kill me while hunting plus the "medicine" gives me extra energy to climb to peaks.
  16. State Lean-to, there are 3 on the lake. Everything else you listed we have. Mountain house meals, protien bars, rocket stove, water purification cup, wool clothes, compass, headlamps, flashlight xtra batteries. Below is my list and other important stuff like tp i didn't list.
  17. I didn't want to hijack Dirtimes thread so I will start my own. First I welcome any input, suggestions or corcerns pertaining to this hunt. I grew up as a kid in Alaska as a young child hunting bear and caribou, when I hunted NY as a teenager I always missed hunting big woods. I'm 34 now and a year ago my buddy and I decided we wanted to rough it and do a 4 or 5 day deep woods hunt staying in a state lean to or tent. He is active duty in Georgia and I'm a busy bee with work so we knew we would be going in with no actual scouting except for maps and reading whatever we could about the area. We have both done this before but not in coldish weather (30s at night 40-50 during days). We have been on top of everything we could but I definitely have that good nervous feeling now that we are eleven days away. We understand low deer population and a low chance of success but to be honest it is the experience we are both looking forward to. Of course we are looking at freezing rain (firewood will be a challenge) the entire hunt as of todays forcast, so rain gear will add some extra weight in our packs. Anyways I won't have service during the hunt but I will post pictures of our campsite and hopefully a harvest of a mature buck or bear. He has a marsh filled with pines in mind and I will be targeting a saddle about 300 feet in elevation above him. Of course we will follow sign but we do have an original plan. Of course life always throws you a curve and my wife and I bought a house and will be moving in right after the hunt so I will have a busy few weeks.
  18. My buddy called me at about 530 for help dragging this guy out. He was behind some doe's and reacted to a grunt call. Deer was shot in Orange County, and the coyote were on him an hour later. I believe we pushed the coyote off him just in time to salvage all the meat. We found two fresh rubs from today on the track job.
  19. Nope. I spent a couple days doing that myself.
  20. Good luck! I know the feeling of not making a shot I think I should have, hope you find him
  21. Yeah i seem to have overestimated.
  22. Lol yeah im suprised. Butcher said the deer was 140 pounds. There is pork added but almost all venison.
  23. Six hours they had everything done. Over a hundred pounds of meat including 20 lbs of sausage. Been before but figured I would spread the word.
