LIVE From The Woods 2020 - Let's hear stories and see some pictures!
Swamp_bucks replied to Marion's topic in Deer Hunting
Going to the same spot I was at opening weekend on sunday morning. I have about the same wind and conditions. Hoping that big 5 or a doe comes through. I'll be in a tree this time only issue with this spot is it's right off the road maybe 100 yards and once they are through I dont expect much movement after 830. -
Well finally saw 1 at a distance no idea what it was. Brother saw 4 going 100mph there was alot of hunter on this peace of stateland so I'm sure they got bumped by someone. Works for us we seem to be the only ones that hunt as deep as we do so the pressure helps us. Going to start focusing on 2 pieces of stateland for now and the one small chunk of private. Haven't sat same piece twice so i think its time to start narrowing my focus to a couple areas.

Well ended up one ridge to far over but did see one sneaking through about 80yards out. My brother had 4 come flying past him at 730 that's all he saw. -

Up and getting ready to go. Found a way to hunt about 100yards from where I jumped all those deer last weekend. Setting my brother up 400yards away in case they use the other bedding area. -
I only use real antlers just a small rack. I can usually rattle in one a year. Usually smaller guys but it's fun to watch them. I did almost have an 8 run me over years ago while I was on the ground. I use my grunt tube and make sure I smash up leaves and sticks. I also dont slam them just tickle them together with maybe one or 2 grunts and sometimes a snortwheeze.

Midday sit resulted in another 2.5hrs with no deer sightings. Honestly wasn't expecting to much but usually there's always a doe up midday in that spot. Last 12hrs on stand and no deer sightings hoping tomorrow's cold changes that. View from my spot.

Well planned on getting 4hrs of sleep. That didn't happen up to do some quick honey do list then off to my creek bottom stand hoping to catch midday movement. Change of plans going to a different spot wind. Is blowing into bedding area according to my phone. I have another spot that they tend to feed on after rain. -

No overtime again this weekend so I'll come home and sleep until noon tomorrow get up and hunt for about 2 hrs between an orchard and stream. Usually there is a scrape line in there so my hope is they will get up and freshen them before I have to get my son at 3. It's also a quick walk in and out so won't disturb anything. -
I try to hunt crosswinds alot. However hunting very hilly areas it doesn't really matter I try to setup so most of my scent blows into areas I least expect deer to show use thermals on low wind days. However opening day of gun last year i had deer show up from every single direction none busted me so it's a crap shoot some times.

Little bucks remind me of 14 yrs old boys. Easily excited and chase anything that moves thinking they have a chance in hell. Could be an early doe but my guess it's just a young dumb horny buck. -
Going through my trail camera pictures over the last couple years after reading some articles on how bucks tend to keep the same routine every year. I think it may have been discussed on here before also. I noticed my most common time to start getting daylight pictures on 2 properties is October 18-22. Last year alone I had 4 different good bucks on those 2 pieces moving during daylight hours between those days. Of course I wasn't there those days. When do you start noticing more daylight pictures of big bucks?

Yea I feel you with the public land issue. But that's what it makes it so rewarding when you do finally harvest an animal. Takes a lot of patience sometimes more to deal with people then trying to find a good spot to hunt deer. I've had guys yell at me telling me I was trespassing,or I'm not allowed in that piece of stateland because their families always hunted it, all the way to having people help me get put on deer and joining deer drives.
-
So it is true. Yea I had heard NY but either way it's a huge deer.
-
I heard a rumor a massive typical was taken out of tioga county with a recurve. I was told it was on face book. Has anyone see a picture of it or heard about it?
-
My buddy shot s doe couple years ago and we waited until morning to track. They had it down to bones. Only thing on the head that was touch was a chunk missing out of an ear. It's insane they are that much of the face. Are there wolves in Montana? Maybe that's what got ahold of it.

Well last 3 sits came up with nothing on stateland. Sunday morning was on a swamp edge but the wind kept swirling. saturday morning was in a hemlock/oak bottom the only thing that came out was a red fox. I did jump a bunch in that stateland just not sure how to hunt them there yet. Tonight's sit is on a bench that is usually torn up with sign and it was again. So I'll be putting my focus on that chunk this weekend since it has the best sign so far. Picture is from my sit tonight

My view for the night. Ended up getting skunked but I found 18 fresh ribs so I know he's up there somewhere. -

Heading out in a couple minutes kids and wife are going to in laws for dinner tonight so off to the woods I go. As long as the wind isn't horrible I plan on sitting on a side hill that is usually torn up with sign. If it is blowing bad over there I'm going to run up the road and drop down into a creek bottom and still hunt in until I find good sign. -
I just bought my place 2 years ago and I keep telling my wife let's list it in the city get it sold put some cash in our pockets and head south. I've wanted to get out of this state bad for 5 years. Every year I try again. Maybe it'll work st some point.

Nada again. Going to need to re think how I'm going at them. Almost hit a basket rack buck on my way home heading into a piece I scouted this year. I think I'm over thinking my stands. Be out maybe next weekend. -

Well absolutely nothing for us tonight. Between the wind and the heat it kicked out butts. Early to bed tonight and up again in am. -

Well didn't see anything so I got down at 9 and figured ide do a big sweep to see where they are hiding. Well found it. 3 little bucks, and a bunch of flat heads, and a couple others went flying out of this one little 2 acre area.I didn't know was on the property. Walked up on them feeding in acorns at 1030. One of the little bucks caught me walking. Ended up finding a bunch of scrapes in that area and a good size rub. Not sure how to hunt it but I will at some point this season waiting on my friend and his son then off to lunch and afternoon hunt
