  1. Winds pretty good hear in 7p. Only a big red fox hunting for 30mins around me. Sounded like amish next to this chunk of woods had a drive going on. My youth hunter hasn't thing anything yet.
  2. Up the tree. Had to climb 2. Climber the 1st and didn't realize all the junk at tree stand height. Youth hunter and his dad are setup in same piece of stateland about 3/4 -1 mile away. I actually remember my orange hat ar 430 this morning. Hopefully I'm out of the tree by 730 taking hero shots with my nephew.
  3. Food something to drink then off for youth season. Going to suck tonight being 80 but we will be out if he doesn't tag out this morning. Good luck to anyone else who's out today.
  4. Nothing today. I either went to far into the piece or they got out of there before I went in. Did get to see a ton of ducks. Not sure what type they are but they were pretty maybe a wood duck? But there had to be forty of them. Aldo watched a blue herring fish for a long time. Be out in the morning for the youth gun. I'll be putting my friend and his boy in a good area and I'll be hunting down next to a little swamp they like to bed in.
  5. Well got skunked I think I went to far in today. Did get to watch a blue herring fish for awhile. Back out in am for the youth hunt
  6. OT was cancelled for the weekend so I'll be out by 3 waiting near some oaks. Same stateland as sunday morning where I saw the big 5. Just in a different area of it.
  7. Quick question do deer like to hit acorns more in mornings or afternoon? never really focused on acorns and figure I would tomorrow night or one morning this weekend. There's a spot that usually has good acorn crop out of a massive white oak. Problem is bedding is within 100-150 yards. Most common way out and in is through where I want to put a stand since the back side is blocked off by 4ft of water. My guess is sneak in mid day hang a stand and wait for them to feed on them before heading to fields. Wind will be blowing into a big pond the entire time.
  8. Forgot to post this but finally have a big buck on camera. The little buck I'm pretty sure is the 4 I passed saturday night.
  9. Ive been told and always gone by the rule of be on the other side of the ditch and don't shoot across the road. I see a lot of guys doing drives including us and sitters are right off the road.
  10. Well looks like saturday we will be hunting in a t shirt and blue jeans or shorts for the youth gun. Forecast shows almost 80 for the high. Hoping they will still get up and feed in the apples and alfalfa field before dark.
  11. If I can figure out how I have video of the piebald from my trail camera. He walked through last saturday night while I was on stand.
  12. Ladder stands are brand new every year. For my hang on I use the strap it comes with and put 1000lb ratchet on it as well. Ratchet kills 2 birds with 1 stone keeps my ass safe in the tree plus locks my sticks onto stand nice and solid to they don't bang around while walking. But I also don't leave stands out all year and this year I picked up 3 stands that connect with chains and those also have ratchets on them.
  13. Hoping to get out thursday morning since it looks like the last cold day for awhile. Hope i can sneak into where I sat sunday morning and saw those bucks and doe.
  14. You would be surprised how big some of the bucks in this state are. I bet there are many 140-160s taken yearly.
  15. That's awesome. congrats to that young man on a nice shot. Congrats to you also dad making sure he was so prepared. You got a hunting partner for life now.
  16. Congrats on the does. Just got off the phone with my friend me and him will be trying to get a deer for his oldest boy this weekend. We werent sure if they were going with me or one his grandfathers. I'll be putting them where I sat Saturday night and they are sitting in another one of my spots Saturday morning. I've been saving this spot just in case they went with me.
  17. When you shot your doe did you put the antlerless bow/muzzleloader tag or either sex? If you used you antlerless only tag you can still take a buck during bow season. That's how I do it in my area because it's hard to get a dmp for my main hunting area.
  18. I would find some milk weed and dry it out and use that to check your wind. I've used it for 3 years and you'll be surprised how the wind actually moves through the woods. I had deer under 12 yards this morning and wind blowing what I thought was at them dropped some milk weed and it went about 3 yards out and sucked right into the stream next to me. Checked after they left.
  19. I wasn't planning on them coming through where they did I was focused the other way where the trails are down to dirt. But yes it got the blood pumping pretty good this am.
  20. Oh yea I hunt a handful of times from the ground a year with bow and most of gun season. I did make a better natural ground blind for the next time if i don't want to hang a stand.
  21. Sit number 3 on stateland Well I tried biz style from the ground. Result was a fun morning but I messed up. Same stateland I hunted friday just farther down the ridge. I can see the road from the setup I found. At 7 I had a doe come through where I didn't think they would so I couldn't get turned to shoot her. So once she walked off I repositioned my chair thinking if more come through they will most likely take the same path. Well at 8 o'clock here comes another one. Well I thought it was a small buck and it walked passed looked body wise like a large 1.5 basket 4. Well at that time I could hear another one coming thinking it may be bigger I looked over and saw a spike at 5 yards. When I saw him I realized i just let a 2.5 walk and turned to shoot him well he saw me move. That's when I realized he wasn't a basket 4 he was a 5 point out to the ears. Needless to say after a stare down he bounded off. It was a lot of fun but I found a tree to get them coming in next time. All 3 deer passed by at under 12 yards. Really pushing myself to take a 2.5 and up this year. He was a lot bigger than that spike just judged his body wrong with and yes his antlers played into that judgement and just tgought he was younger. Now I know he's there.
