  1. The fawns will get a pass and momma with get a Rocket Steelhead...
  2. Correct. A deer in it's first year of life is a fawn. This year's fawns will be next years yearlings.
  3. Saw a nice buck (3.5 year old I'd guess) glued to a doe last night, he wasn't exactly running her all over the place with his nose to the ground, but he was following every move she made not letting her get out of his sight. Hopefully, the cold snap this weekend will get things rolling!!!
  4. Here's a pic of the Alabama NY buck... Congrats to both young hunters on taking a couple of opening day NY monsters!!!
  5. I filled two nuisance permits for a property owner back in September too. Shooting them with the 7-08 isn't as fun to me as watching an arrow zip through the ribcage...
  6. I have a new camera...was using the self-timer mode...most of the pics cam out with my eyes closed or mouth open...I finally gave up.
  7. Thanks man. You need to take me under your wing and show how to kill the big bucks!!!
  8. The first tag for the 2011 season is officially punched. Had this doe come by this AM at 7:30...30 yd shot (quartering away), put a good hit on her...she went 40 yds and went down...dead in a matter of seconds. First arrow fired at an animal with my new bow. Gotta love it. Gonna have to get the grill cranking...it's backstrap time!!!
  9. Yeah, that's his brisket...they become more pronounced with age. I'd like to see what his neck looks like now after another month of being jacked up on testosterone. I bet there's some shredded trees around!!! The area that this buck calls home has produced several giants over the past few years. All three of these bucks were killed within a mile or so from where this guy is... Another friend's bowkill form '08: A 15 year old amish kid just over the kill shot this one in '09... And of course there's this monster from last season. He was killed on the same property as the buck from the trailcam pics... But, we have no big deer in this state, right? Better shoot that 4-pt before the neighbor get him... .
  10. Here's a bruiser of a buck that I have a little bit of history with. This pic was emailed to me by a buddy of mine who is hunting this deer. He's not the biggest racked buck that I ever seen but dang, he's got a neck on him for Sept 22nd!!! This guy has to be at least 6.5 years old...a real old-timer by NY standards. Last year's trailcam pic: Last year's sheds. I found the right side and the neighbor kid found the left: The mass at the base of the shed is by far the most impressive feature... His antler from last year compared to a previous set (either from '09 or '08): Crappy still shots from my handicam in '09:
  11. It's a chance you have to be willing to take. Some young bucks will make it...some won't; not much you can do but hope for the best.
  12. Headed to my lease this afternoon...first time ever hunting there. The wind was blowing wrong at the first stand, moved to another one but had to abandon that one too due to the rain. Ended up sitting underneath a cabin (front is raised up on stilts), had this little guy come by @ 15 yds, also drew back on a small doe @ 30yds but decided to pass. Saw 6 deer total...
  13. Woke up yesterday AM @ 5:45, ate breakfast, started to get ready to go out, came to my senses and went back to bed.... Put a stand up later in the AM and headed out for the evening hunt around 4:00 despite the wind/rain. Had this little yearling 8-pt. come out around 5:30. He just showed up one my cams for the first time a couple of days ago. Real nice young buck, hopefully he can make it through a couple more seasons: He bedded out in the field and I climbed down and snuck out without spooking him. I ran into a spike on the way out...we had a staredown @ 40 yds...I got within 20 yds...he just kept staring and finally let out a snort and spooked. He stopped at the edge of the woods and then started following me for a little ways as I walked back to the truck!!! Heading up to the stand in a few minutes, the weather is a lot better this AM...
  14. You started it here dude. Shoot whatever deer you to want this fall...big or small...buck or doe...I don't really care. I'm hunting the stand tonight where this buck is. If I don't get blown out of the tree and he actually shows up, he'll get to live another day. Hopefully, a nice fat doe will show up first so I can kill her and gut here with my teeth like a coyote... !!! Seriously, let's end the crap. Good luck this season.
  15. I can sit here and joke about it all day long. As I stated earlier, there is no right or wrong answer here. I was just trying to get a picture of what other hunters' standards are from across the state. I'm not looking to start any verbal forum wars with anyone...
  16. Bucks grow larger with age...not only is this true in Iowa, but here in NY too.
  17. Doc, Is there a meaning to your poetic ramblings or were you just bored last night? Seriously, you just have to stir the pot with sarcasm...
  18. This nice looking young buck decided to get up close and personal with my camera. First time I've ever seen him. Hopefully, he'll stick around for the next 2 or 3 years...
  19. I don't know man, that droptine deer that you got on your camera is the one that I'd be after... !!!
  20. He's a beauty. That's the same deer as the one in your avatar, right?
  21. I have really enjoyed getting the chance to see some other peoples' deer management philosophies here guys. Remember, the title of this thread is directed at YOU not me. I figured that a majority of the members on here would let an arrow fly at him. My decision to let this particular deer walk is firm. There is not a right or wrong answer here whether this buck should be passed on. It's your tag, use is as you wish... Good luck this weekend!!!
  22. I am very familiar with the Lakoskys...both their show and their backgrounds. They are truely living the "whitetail hunter's dream" (my dream anyways). No, I do not base my standards based on these TV shows set in highly managed midwestern properties. My goal is not to shoot a 170" deer, if it were I am hunting the wrong state. I do a lot of scouting over the summer/fall and I know what my area is capable of producing. There are P&Y class bucks roaming my hunting area and my goal for the season is to kill a respectable 3.5 year old or older buck and I am willing to eat my buck tag if one never presents itself. There will be venison in the freezer at season's end whether it's from a buck that meets my standards or by filling DMPs. As for the deer in question here...if I pass him up on the first day of season he will still be the same size on the final day and he will get passed on again. My standards don't go down as the season progresses.
  23. I wasn't offended. Rather, I was just trying to let it be known that I do in fact eat a lot of vension.
  24. I've killed nearly 20 does in the past 5 seasons and have no problems getting up to my elbows in blood, guts and gore...
