What about distance? Did you misjudge the distance? Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

If I could "order" hunting violation penalties, it would be a simple "ZERO TOLERANCE" formula. You do something illegal (Baiting, Poaching, etc.), you lose your license for life in the state of NY. It would make a lot of people think twice.

You are a PANZY! Man up and hunt the legal way! How many deer did you get on camera the legal way? I bet you got none, got discouraged, and then started cheating. I HOPE YOU GET CAUGHT!

Clearly my comment of "I hope the officers use a stringer and drag this guy naked through the streets of Pulaski like a mudshark!" was a joke. However, the kid posted a picture of deer with illegal bait and then admitted to it. I guarantee if I started baiting in Putnam County for trail cam reasons, I would have eventually get pics of big bucks too. Point is, illegal is illegal and in all honesty I hope he gets caught and fined and loses his license, just like somebody who drives 100mph. Pictures of big bucks next to illegal bait pisses me off, what can I say? This is the type of kid who will post a pic of his 100"+ 8pt later this year and be happy about all the congrats he gets. Meanwhile he is a CHEATER & LAWBREAKER!

My brothers friend shot a doe years ago in Putnam County on state land. He gutted it and brought it to the butcher. The butcher couldn't believe how big it was. He weighed it at 210lbs already gutted. The kid had no idea, it was his first deer. He thought it was a typical doe and that dragging a deer is really hard work. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

Moose in SullivanCounty could happen. There was a moose in my parents backyard (Putnam County) a few years ago. I actually know a kid who shot with a potato gun. I found an article from 2005 talking about it. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E02EFD81430F936A15751C1A9639C8B63

Cheer up man. Things will change! Here's a quick true story: My Dad has hunted for 50+ years in NY for whitetails. In the 60's and 70's in the catskills he only killed 3 bucks in 19 years, they were the only 3 bucks he even saw in those 19 years. Each year he hunted 15-16 days out of the gun season. He never gave up and since then has killed something like 22 bucks in the last 25 years.

Great buck. Hope you took field pics. Just a personal thing, but I hate those back of the truck pics. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

Party Friday night in NYC. Land in CT is 2 hours away. Rather hunt afternoon - dark, then pull an nighter and be a zombie in the woods.

Point taken. I'm not here to argue. Just to offer suggestions like others.
-
You act like I suggested a .458 or something? Realistically, the kid could buy a .270 weatherby magnum and never buy another rifle for the rest of his life. He could shoot deer with it, coyotes, black bear, and anything he wants in NY. Then if someday he expands his hunting range to out west, he can still use the same gun. Sounds pretty good to me. If he wants a gun to "plink" with, then get a .22

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Some people love Remington's, Winchester's, Tikka, etc....I am biased to Weatherby's.
-
I only shoot handloads as well. I agree with the point about factory loads costing a lot. Unless he's not going to be shooting a lot. I don't shoot a lot. I only shoot probably 20 rounds a year through it. 10-15 shots a year at the range, and a handful after flying to make sure the scope didnt jar.

The .270 Weatherby Magnum I shoot is from the 1950's or 1960's. It has taken probably over 50 big game animals between 3 generations of people (Me, My Dad, My Grandfather) in various states and countries. Many of these animals were taken at 400+ yards. It shoots amazing and there's never been an issue with it. When my grandfather bought it 50-60 years ago he didn't have a lot of $, he just wanted a very accurate rifle. We obviously got our moneys worth from the rifle over the years. I think it was a great purchase.

Tempted to have another scorer measure it lol. I mean 1/16th of an inch is tiny. Maybe another judge would have it slightly bigger depending on how he reads the ruler. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

Not many have according to my taxidermist and the SCI scorer. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

Got my bobcat officially measured by SCI yesterday. The skull scored 9 10/16", which ties me for 10th all-time in the rifle category. I shot mine with a shotgun, but there is no shotgun category, it goes with rifle entries. The SCI scorer said I lost a little bit by having my taxidermist boil the skull. Oh well, maybe could have went top 6-9. Pretty cool nontheless to be ranked top 10 all-time in history. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

Yea your probably right. So back to the odd rack, what is it? Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
