  1. Sounds and looks delicious! Does the inside of the jelly roll cook through enough? Whenever I try something like this, the inside tends not to cook while the outside risks getting over cooked.
  2. I was looking at that and the pot belly and wondering to myself if I would attempt bacon with it...

    Nice buck, congrats!
  4. Morning summary: saw 18 on the way in including a nice buck. Was in stand by 6. At 6:07 i hear something walking toward me crunching through the beans. At that point it was so dark with the cloud cover that i just saw a black blob against a gray background. It stopped about 10yds from my stand, but i couldn't tell if it was a deer or a bear. No actual bear in this area. It was definitely a deer. I'm just making the point that it was dark. It then crossed my tail that i just walked in on without spooking. Another nod for evercalm! Then at 710 i saw a deer 200 yds away moving from left to right. I hit the pig and made it grunt, but the buck didn't stop. Then the rain came. Forecast called for only a 5% chance, but it rained a steady cold rain that i wasn't dressed for. By 930 I'd had enough and worked my way back to the car.
  5. Just parked. I'm about 30 minutes earlier than i meant to be. This cold dry weather must have me excited. I saw 18 deer on the drive in including a nice big 8. They're on their feet ladies and gents. Good luck to everyone out!
  6. Coffee is on. Think i may wear the parka today. It's chilly out there!
  7. Climbed down a little while ago and got myself cleaned up. No deer seen. In the office now plotting my approach tomorrow morning. I think I'm going to sit over the bean field, although I haven't seen as much activity in it since they turned brown.
  8. Out for a quick sit before work. Chose a different spot today closer to home. Picked up a summit climber yesterday. Super comfortable so far.
  9. Here are a few that I tried to connect on over the past few years.. plenty of pix of both, i even saw them both on the hoof, although always during Bow and from 400 yds away. Different neighbors confirmed taking them during gun season..
  10. Today was a bust. Radar showed rain from Saturday night until 4ish Sunday morning, then a break until 10ish when the rain would resume. Stupid me believed it so was in the stand by 6. Walked in in the rain and told myself 'it's ok, it'll let up'.. 2 hours later and it poured the entire time. Down by 9. No deer seen. On the way home the sun came out and the rest of the day was decent. Ended up apple picking with the kids.
  11. Went out for pheasant this morning. It poured on us the whole time but we had fun. Got a few birds too. I'll be in the stand by 6 tomorrow unless rain keeps me home.
  12. Looking at the weekend weather has me less than excited. I'll probably get out tomorrow morning (assuming it's not pouring and/or lightening) for pheasant with my father in law and a few buddies. The weather might keep back some of the crowd that has become the norm on the pheasant opener. Then Sunday, assuming the rain isn't heavy, I may sit on a field edge in the morning. I have a West facing stand overlooking the beans and that stand would be perfect for Sunday's West wind.
  13. I'm currently reading through "Next" by Michael Crichton. I have a few Stephen King's that I haven't gotten to yet, but those books are BIG.
  14. Here's the quick version. My buddy shot a buck last night. He recovered the arrow and thought the arrow struck further back than ideal. 20 yd quartering slightly away shot. Deer then ran straight into standing corn. He waited a few hours, looked and found blood but bumped the deer. He backed out. His concern with not getting it last night was the heat and coyotes. This morning he went back out at first light, but lost the trail in the corn. My son and I showed up to help. As we're pulling in, we see a dead buck not 10yds behind the back deck on the lawn. My buddy was a few hundred yds back and had no idea. It literally circled around and died right behind the house. Since it was recovered at that point, I showed my son the blood trail and what to look for and what to consider when trailing what could be an injured deer. All in all a great morning. I thought it was an 8 originally but it turned out to be a 7 pt.
  15. Love seeing all the smiling kids with deer! Me and my son are headed out to help a buddy track a deer he shot last night.
  16. That's the best thing I've read all week.
  17. A few more from the recent pull. I'm sitting out this weekend but will be in next weekend.
  18. @Belo I suppose anything is possible. The shot felt good and rehearsed, but a few things could have played out that resulted in the missed shot. There may have been a small branch that I didn't see, the mechanical could have opened early.. hell maybe I farted and the force of the air pushed my body forward, resulting in a low shot. Next time I get out I won't monkey with the equip ahead of time.
  19. If I thought I pulled the shot, I'd own it. A 20 yard shot at a broadside doe gives me lots to aim at within a well practiced range. I may have blown it, but it's also possible that the blades opened and changed the arrow flight. Prior to taking to the field I was inspecting the broadheads. I recalled thinking that, when they were closed, they seemed really tight and I was afraid that they may fail to deploy if they were that tight. Based on that I worked them back and forth trying to loosen them, and didn't push them 100% closed trying to prevent any failures. Maybe I shouldn't have fiddled with this and should have trusted the equipment.
  20. Meant to post this earlier, but was busy with other stuff. I was walking out either saturday or sunday morning this past weekend. I had the bean field to my left and thick cover to my right. I always walk out slow and ready because I've had deer pop out in front of me on several occasions. This time, it was a solo doe. I froze and watched her feed into the beans at about 75 yards quartering away. When her head was down, I managed to sneak to within 20 yds. I drew back and put the pin on her chest and squeezed the trigger and then watched her run back into the cover totally unharmed. I found the arrow and it confirmed a clean miss. 20 yds is a chip shot for me. I brought the bow back and shot another arrow at a target and hit the bull at the same range. The only thing I can think is that the mechanical broadhead opened in flight and changed the flight trajectory. I'm frustrated, but glad for the clean miss rather than an injured deer. Luckily there weren't any other deer around when this happened. I'll give these BH's one more chance. If they fail again I'm switching to fixed blades.
