I have watched the event go down hill in the last couple of years as the number of exhibits and events have shrunk in number. I think I will pass on it this year and maybe something will change by the next time I get the urge to check it out again. It's a real shame because it used to be a real good sales opportunity for hunting, fishing, and trapping. Hopefully it will become that again.

I went a couple years ago . there were a lot less vendors set up and they said it was due to the prices that the DEC charged them for spots . I would think that the DEC would want to draw vendors in ....... It is also the weekend of the Rochester Gun Show .

I heard a couple of the vendors saying the same thing about the costs. It's a shame. My thought would be that the spots ought to be juried and then assigned for free (or nearly so) to those vendors and displays that they deemed suitable. The whole affair is really too important and effective to be keeping displays away because of costs. Sure, "off-topic" displays can go, and that's why I say, jury the displays ahead of time and be sure that they are all directly hunting, fishing and trapping related and then do whatever is necessary to make participants feel welcome. I am hearing way too many people that say they are no longer going because it is shrinking.

I often wondered why there are not more rod & gun clubs represented. I remember back when I was a member of Avon Bowmen, we had two displays set up. One indoors with slide shows promoting archery, and another outdoors with a whole bunch of bows that I donated for that purpose. We let kids shoot and provided instruction. They had a ball, and I'm sure that we created more than a few future bowhunters at that event. Most of all those kids had never had a bow in their hands before. It was always an annual club project and drew a lot of attention. I don't recall display cost even being a consideration, even for the two different display areas.

The whole event is sure suffering from the departure of Ron Shroeder (DEC). He really knew how to organize a hell of an event.

I can understand the Insurance part . People have gone "sue happy" over the years and no longer take responsibility for their own actions . Insurance coverage is a necessity !

Yeah but that wouldn't be a new or recent requirement would it? I mean shouldn't the DEC have always been required to carry liability insurance on that property? Maybe the cost of it went up or something, but I'm sure that being a public facility, they must have always had some requirement for insurance.

Me and my family attended the Suffolk county event in Ridge. It was my first time, and we will probably make it into a yearly trip since its 15minutes away if they keep it at the ridge dec. My son got some archery lessons from Smith point archery joad. He loved it, I may have a young bow hunter in the making. He is turning 7 in November so he has some time :P or maybe I have some time to prepare haha.

We saw pointing dogs locate birds in a field. Wish there were more flushing groups on long island. Took the kids fishing. Overall good day. Not too many vendors but it was still a nice day spent.

It was a bad turnout today, probably due to the weather. There were a couple more tables than the last couple of years, but nothing significant. It was great to finally meet FastEddie, and sit and shoot the breeze in person.

I had this great grilled cheese sandwich too, rye bread, cheddar cheese, baked apple slices and bacon. Awesome combo!

I wont be there till the late afternoon to do the trailcam drawing and take the booth down, but Im hoping the guys have a bit better weather.

After talking to some people there, I think a major factor in the loss of vendors has been the gun show at the dome thats been running the same weekend for the past few years.

Nothing great except that I met WNY Buckhunter . I called him first . A few tables had a lot of archery gear . I bet I have more gear than what they had in my basement .

Doc , was that you sitting at the New York Bowhunter's table ? :girlcrazy:

No, most likely I won't be making it this year. I think I had better spend the time scouting. I'm running way behind this year. I thought maybe if there was something really great, I might make the trip. But after so many consecutive years, there really hasn't been a lot that has been new. So maybe my time will be better spent doing something that really needs more work .... scouting.

I wonder why they don't do a bit of negotiating and see if one date or the other can be moved? I know the NH&F day is a national event and isn't likely to be changed for one location, but you would think the gun show would be interested in not having a competing event. Is the gun show a two-day event?
