Well finally installed the stove from father inlaw.These things put off some friggen heat,I didn't know they put out that much.My question is what's the most efficient pellets to be burning hardwood or alternative.At this time I'm using hardwood but seems to have a lot of ash and have to clean every day.

pellet stoves are great! i actually just turned mine on last night... i burn Okanagan Pellets i believe i can double check when i get home but what ever they are they throw off amazing heat and burn very clean fine ash! they burn long too... i love the ones i use but each stove might burn just a bit different.

I prefer a wood burning stove myself. Going to be getting mine ready this weekend. Cleaning chimney and setting up pipes. Hope to fire it up Saturday night but still been too warm on LI. But I wish I had it going last night, it was downright chilly in the house this morning.

Pellets vary greatly in quality.

Try a few bags of a manufacturer and see how they burn in your stove.

Softwood actually can make the best pellet for density, btu's and lowest ash per lb.

I use softwood or a blend - almost never a hardwood.

Why kind of cost is there with installation? I have practically a complete set up but not installed.

I've been around them a long time as my family always had one, but my house has LP with a couple ventless fireplaces. I'd like to swap out one of them in the lower floor of my split level. With my back issues, that's unfortunately the kind of work I really can no longer do.

My set up came from my grandparent's house...it can't be more than 4 years old.

I got mine from inlaws because they wanted a larger stove the only thing I had to purchase was a some pipe,they sell a through the wall kit and that is around $200 and thats all I needed.They are very easy to install.

never had a soft wood burn good in my stove... to ashy and it always clumped up.

Phade - $150 to 300 for pipe if you have none.

$200 to 350 labor for someone certified/insured.

If you are handy at all, self install is relativity easy.

Having the stove checked and cleaned professionally if you have little experience is not a bad idea.

Generally they will give you a tutorial as well.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to get this done for the next winter. I already prepaid my LP contract...otherwise, I'd be going this route.

Thank-you SteveB thats some good information.I think this should cut my fuel bills in half.Was going to change furnace from kerosene to propane but going to see how much I save using the pellets,I found a company in con and there price is 229 a ton delivered.

i paid 4k out the door for mine, delivered, installed and piping... that year we had a $1500 tax break for energy efficient also, so the stove cost me 2500 lol brandnew. Its a really nice Avalon, 50K BTU i think. heats my house perfect!

I got a Summers Heat stove last year from Lowes after burning wood for decades. I will never go back to wood and love my pellet stove. I buy New England wood pellets which are made right here in NY and are a hardwood blend. Be advise these stoves require a quick cleanout every day and you will want to clean the ash off the wear plate at least twice a day during the cold season.

pellets are made by a corporation. and what do corporations do once they figure they got you hooked on thier product? great alternate source of heat but the well to do corp slime mongers will work the price up to 15.00 a bag when they can. thats why i burn wood.

And firewood dont go up in price? Or the gas to cut it and haul it. How many times a night do you get up to put firewood on the stove? Now that right there is the biggest of all trade off to switching to pellets, because I dont get up now during all hours of the night and never will have too again. The price of firewood has increase dramatically in my area. I know a guy in Oneonta, NY who is getting $80.00 a face cord and it sells.

I have to agree with Clifford.Set thermostat and rest comfortable,with the woodstove I found myself getting up all hours of the night not only to add wood but to make sure nothing else was burning.

Geno C about how many tons per season do you burns? I have a three bedrooms aprox 1400 square ft ranch home with forced air in the past we have spent about 1300 per winter for fuel.Just curious how much you saved by using pellets.

i have a 2200sq ft home i burn about 2 1/2 tons maybe 3 and trust me when i say the house is 70° sometimes 75 lol. at night i put it down to mid low 60s. i have a split, first levels is a bedroom/bathroom, laundry room, mid level living room, kitchen, dining, up stair 3 bedrooms and a bath. down stairs gets a bit cool but i turn base board on low and it maybe kicks on a few times a day. the upper level is always hotter so the warmth down stairs stays down there pretty good...

Thats good I think I could put furnace on summer setting to circulate the air.I won't know really until spring how much I'll save.

Well this is the scoop.left stove burning over night and to my suprise only used 1 scoop full of pellets.thermostat was set at 74 degrees,

At this time my cost for heating my home is 1/3 what I have spent in the past.Just got oil delivery only took 80 gal to top off tank,along with that only burned just over a ton of pellets.My cost so far is $500 for 4 months,these pellet stoves rock.
