DEC Turkey Banding

Anyone hear about DEC asking for land access so they can survey the turkey population and determine why it is falling? Wanted to see what the particulars are. Last time DEC asked us about doing a deer assessment and forestry review they wanted in return to open the land to the public for 5 years.

They did a turkey recovery on a neighbors land several years ago....not close neighbor...but close enough so several very lrg Toms I'd been watch all spring...disappeared...what showed up in their place was 5 banded Jakes just before hunting season...this peeved me a bit I don't shoot Jakes...so I called and asked if they'd been in the area banding....Yep and catching mature birds to release in other areas....Nice!!!!

Did u ever harvest one of those birds with band?

Havent heard of any banding recently, i had birds banded at my place several years ago, and mannaged to get a tagged bird as well

No I did not but I did find several wings...and tails around the property...I'm assuming the fox/yotes found these youngins......

DEC has launched a Wild Turkey Survival Study. Looking for landowners in Regions 3-9 to cooperate in trapping, fitting with radio collars and releasing. The emphasis is on hen survival. More info: ny.gov/animals/48756

This has been done since 2009. Radio collars are replacing banding. Anyone ever harvest one with a radio collar?
