Deerthug
They want us to cower and hide under our desks made of packed wood and overpower the active shooter with a pair of scissors while he/she is shooting at us with an AR - - - Really???? http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/shear_bravery_beats_guns_feds_d9BanDpupuVezePd6trYoM
Early
"Hide under a desk" That has been taught to a bazillion school kids. What rubbish!!! I have always taught my kids and grandkids, "Do NOT make yourself an easy target. Do not hide under a desk!" My advice: "Run, if you can....attack the aggressor, if you cannot. Just do not be a willing victim!"

wooly
I'd tell my kids to take cover and play possum untill the gunfire stops in a situation like that. A random firing mass shooter isn't gonna be paying attention to who's already been shot and who hasn't.

A random firing mass shooter isn't gonna be paying attention to who's already been shot and who hasn't. I had the same discussion with my daughter just last week. The only kid that walked out of the classroom in Sandy Hook was playing dead. If someone was to grab her, she is to kick, scratch, bite and go for their privates and or neck. Once she is able to do so, shes to run as fast as she can, as far as she can away from the school, then seek help in a public place like a store, etc. In school, they teach them to cower behind the shelves. Unfortunately, I don't think a young kid will be able to stay calm enough to play anything when the shots are ringing out.

You may be right, but when kiddos get frightened, they quickly remember what their parents or authoritive figures tell them to do in a situation. (ex. stranger danger, calling 911 in emergencies, fire evacuation drills.etc.) You would probably have a harder time convincing adults to do the wise thing even though they understand the consequences of doing otherwise. Without a rehearsed plan, they're just sitting ducks. Edited February 1, 2013 by wooly
shawnhu
Definitely reversals are paramount in kids doing what they are told in times of chaos. No kid should be put through this.
