bullheads?

Hey guys, my 11 year old son has got the itch to do some bullhead fishing. Just wondering when you guys think they will start biting. I don't know all the particulars as to when they will start biting so looking for some help. Thanks!!

They are biting right now. After this rain it should be picking up. Nightcrawlwers or leaches will do the trick. The bite will pick up right at dusk. You will see people fishing where they are getting them.

Probably not...I remember catching bullheads many times when the wind was bitter and it was spitting snow..Usually after they start biting, colder weather doesn't have that much of an effect..

The cold shouldn't matter. I've cought a bunch through the ice. Night crawlers should do it, but if you want to really get serious just go grab a few dozen medium shiner minnows a few days ahead and let them get a little stinky.

I've got quite a few on chicken livers.

The mud bottom creeks are full of them. Got a pail full yesterday.  Make good garden fertilizer.

I, too, like liver for bullhead bait...any kind of liver.  For clean easy-to-handle bait, just cut some "crawlers" from the liver and then roll them in corn meal and throw them in a ziploc baggie...add a little more cornmeal and head for your favorite fishing hole.   Cornmeal keeps the bait pleasant to handle and adds a little chumming action to your setup.

 

For preparing those bullheads for the table, we gave up gutting/skinning years ago.  We now fillet with an electric knife...skinless,boneless fillets...ready for the pan in a jiffy.

Hehehehehe..My mom would KILL for a mess of bullheads..<<grin>>...

 

Like early, I used to skin and gut them and I have a really fast and easy method for doing that..

 

However, I now use the electric knife...Quick, easy, and I like the way the filets fry up better than doing the whole fish.

I have to agree with the electric filet knife. Makes the job so much quicker with any of the small to medium eating fish.
