I found this woodcock nest while looking for antlers today. The bird actually sat tight on it with me directly above it before she took off and landed about 40yds away. Scared the crap outta me because she was so camoflaged, I couldn't tell what she was even with my face right over her.... she's lucky I didn't have any bacon with me,lol

A couple of years ago I was hunting spring gobblers in Maine with a friend..

He was on his way to the woods one morning before daylight and had to stop his truck to allow a momma woodcock and several nestlings to cross the road in front of him.. He said the baby birds were perhaps the size of a half dollar, and were waddling across the road behind thier mother.. Pretty cool stuff..I wish I was there with him to see it...

The best woodcock show I ever had was when I was parked along a woods road just at daylight, listening for a gobbler to sound off on an adjacent hillside.

A pair of woodcock landed in the road near me, and I watched the male do his mating dance for the female, after which they both flew off together..

Being the romantic type that I am, I assumed there was a happy ending.
