Did the "hail mary" of hunting. Got done watching the kids at about 2:45. Got to my parking spot a little after 3:00. Pretty much sprinted up the mountain through the "no deer land". Got a few hundred yards from the feeding area where I planned to sit and slowed it down. About 50 yards from where I was going to sit I jumped a huge deer. Couldn't see horns but wouldn't be suprised if it was Mr. Big. And that's all I saw. If I had only asked grandma to watch the kids when the wife was working...

If I can get out of my driveway tomorrow am I'll be heading to my lease for the last time this season. After that I have 2 more mornings nearby at my trusty public honey hole.

It's been a fruitful NY season and my personal best in terms of number harvested, but worst in terms of sightings, I cashed in on limited oportunities.

I saw zero bucks at my lease during shooting hours...and only saw 1 big mature buck anywhere all season, saw him twice and harvested him.

It follows that I saw zero coupling in any form for the first time in 6 years of hunting in CNY. Meanwhile I have plenty of sign and nighttime pics of a large healthy herd of big ag deer.

I blame all the long standing corn and plentiful masts with the mild bow season and incredibly harsh early gun and late bow/ml.

I am starting to already mentally prepare for NJ Xmas archery...setting my stand and mms camera, and some legal nutritional encouragement on Xmas eve and hunting 26-28th. I will also be back in Feb for late bow after Tompkins Dmfa ends in January.

Still I feel a bit of despair that the day to day phase of my whitetail hunting is nearly over, back to home maintenance and renovations, and lots of archery practice...

Got a lot of nice and fresh snow today. Went out this afternoon to try and cut some tracks, but did not come across a single deer. Called it quits after I met up with a hiker and his dog.

I did cut some coyote tracks, and found where I believe it was bedding down. I think the folks with the dog pushed it, because the tracks were somewhat fresh and they cut my older tracks from an hour or so before.

Tomorrow should be a nice day for some tracking! Now sure if I want to take a flier with the bow or the muzzle loader.

Well the weather man was actually right. Got about 8". I was figuring we would get 3" from the track record they have had. Looks like I am stuck at home with my turbo front wheel drive beater. I wish I had hurried up and put my truck together (changed clutch).  Now do I wake the wife and see if she needs the Xterra?

My wife kept me up late last night and even with my decent 4wd truck I didn't feel like navigating snow covered roads 25 miles at 5:15 am again...so I'm gonna hunt the public land this afternoon and make my way to the lease for the last time tomorrow.

If you woke your wife you are a braver man than I!

I started late season with the bow...a couple ML harvests on this board motivated me to take it out the past few trips, but only seeing small deer in range (and in bow range) I decided to go back to bow and if I get a crack at a lil one now ill take it...just didn't want to gun down another young doe.

Just looked out the window and noticed the main body of Otisco Lake has got skim ice.

Below the causeway and up by the dam has been frozen over a week now...looks like we are in for a real winter.

I'll be hunting pines and thickets this pm.

No, I am a coward, I didn't go near her. She frightens me when I wake her. But I can use it for the afternoon!

Followed some tracks from early this morning to where they crossed the road. I thought I was going to be lucky enough to follow them into the thick area where they bedded. But it seems that every deer on the hill crossed the road this morning and headed into the valley. Only other tracks I saw were from a lone coyote.

I had a great walk though. That snow can really wear you out!

Doe down, last sit of the year. I tracked a deer earlier in the day and passed it up. Saw two huge beds and both went onto neighboring properties. I ended up sitting in an old wooden blind overlooking hardwoods where they fed in the morning. Looked up and there was a deer. I shot and missed a neck shot. The deer stayed and I reloaded. Took a broadside shot and the deer took off dragging it's rear leg. My stomach twisted and I felt sick. It was my first bad hit in 15 years of hunting. I was praying and praying I hit an artery, luckly I did. Saw her bedded down and tried for another shot. I don't think I hit her again. I tried to reload and I dropped all my primers in the snow. I ran up to dispatch with a knife and she expired before I had to. This was my worst experience while hunting. Oh, to top it off after she took off dragging her leg there was a fawn looking for her (didn't see the fawn before I shot), and I felt blood running down my face, my first case of scope nose. Thank God she died within 20 minutes of the first shot, and she wasn't lactating. The skipper was of good size and hopefully it will team up with some other deer. Just a rough, rough evening but something many hunters go through at one time or another. Must have bumped my scope, I am really shocked it went down like this.

      Hi Everyone,
It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

      best of holiday wishes!

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

I'm new to the area and looking for some places to hunt  the next few weekends through bow/muzzleloader season. I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      Hi Everyone,
My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!
