A bit late but take a soda (pop) can, or something more to the wifes visual liking, put holes in it and shave Ivory Soap inside and hang from the tree.   Deer won't bother them - apparently they don't like the smell if Ivory.  At least that's according to a local commercial apple grower.

I've had neighbors use the ivory soap before to keep deer away...he swears by it and I had not seen a single deer in his field where the soap was...

Ive used Irish Spring soap, and an old sock soaked with AXE body gel soap. Both worked equally as well.
