CuseHunter
Well this season for me has sucked. Archery season I got out 4x's a week, saw lots of deer, passed on them. As regular season opened, I had to miss opening weekend and last weekend due to the army. During the week I had college I had to buckle down for. Now my season is over and I feel like I didn't even hunt. Is there any places still open for deer hunting besides like LI? I am willing to travel up to 3 hours from Syracuse to hunt. There is hunt going on in southern NY into January... more of a population control.. doe only in most areas.. I'll see if I can find you the link on how to get registered to hunt the area.. I think it is bow only as well.. but I heard there are lots of deer. Edited December 16, 2013 by nyantler

I doubt it fits your budget for money or time this year but in the future there are some great hunts to be had down south. I hunted Alabama a couple times in mid January and had a blast. Relatively reasonably priced hunts with liberal bag limits and friendly folks. You're a young guy and putting in the time and effort now to get your life started in the right direction. You will have plenty of time in the future to fill plenty of tags!! If you do make it out here in NYS in the next day or so, good luck!

CuseHunter
http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/82382.html really appreciate it! It looks like Wednesday (my last final) I'll have to prepare for the trip. Tonight when I get home from classes I'll look into the application and see who I can call
UpstateNomad90
nj goes to feb 18? New Jersey also hosts "Unlimited deer" which means exactly as it sounds but you can only take 2 per day, atleast that was how it was last year when I was looking for another place to hunt
CuseHunter
I don't know if I'll be able to afford a NJ hunt. I'm sure tags are expensive plus everything else involved (gas, food, housing) maybe if I split it with three friends
CuseHunter
Don't let Bubba hear you speak like that. Tonight when I get home from classes I'll look into the application and see who I can call I'm pretty sure that there are portions of the focus area that allow shotgun as well as bow
Vince1
bah, got home and started looking into the DMFA for options and found a story about lack of access. google david figura , deer hunters complain about lack of access in special Tomkins county hunting area. would post a link but no pasting or something. seeing as how im 5 hours away that's a long way to go to have a deer run straight into posted land. people just don't want hunters on their land. oh well. I registered anyway, might make the trip
nyantler
My friend hunted it earlier in the season with bow.. he talked to the park rangers who were very helpful... there are some areas outside the parks that are public land and able to be hunted with the permit. The only access problem he had was some of the tough terrain... parking and such I don't know about with all the snow.
Meat Manager
Tompkins DMFA in and around Ithaca re-opens mid-jan thru the end of jan and is 2 doe/day. You just need to register and you print your own free tags. There are bow only public parks there, buttermilk falls is one. One of the reasons there is such a glut of deer in that area is because there is not very much Hunter access it's a lot of residential area and private land/ag. I hunt some private land but you can also hunt Cornell property once you register with them. I got a doe down there 12/2. I also hunt NJ and PA early and late seasons, (this season just NJ) the Jersey license comes up in January you can get your 2014 non-resident bow license for $135 and hunt with it jan-feb and sept-nov. I just bought my additional NJ permits so I can shoot either sex (with 3on1 AR) Xmas eve - 12/29 as well. Tons of small woods/suburban public land in central jersey. Bait is legal, shooting hours 1/2 hour before and after but no Sundays on most public land.
