Pygmy
I plan to plant about 3 acres to soybeans this year. I have never grown them but I have been reading up on them. My soil is average clay soil commomn to the hills here in SW New York. My plan is to broadcast the seed ( ATV mounted seeder) and then disc it in with my discs on my Ford 9N. Any tips as far planting , fertilizing, timing of planting, or any other issue ? The ground had 12 tons of lime spread a little over a year ago. phade
I think the first question is why are you planting them? There are different beans geared toward different growth characteristics (forage, seed pod, etc.). If you are planning to have these beans stay out into snow/winter, look for a shatter-resistant variety so it can help be a late-season drae. If you want summer forage, Eagle is expensive, but popular.
G-Man
i tried them but deer population is just to high despite my attempts to lower it..3 acres sprouted wonderfully..at 4 inches high they were wiped out by the deer... ended up with 5 plants that actually made beans... rotorooter23
We have a farmer lease our hunting land for crops. A few years back he had always had corn in this 10 acre field since we had the land. He switched one year to soybeans to try and replenish the nitrogen in the soil. It was one of my best years for seeing deer from bow hunting season all the way into late December. If you were to sit on that field you could bank on seeing at least 10-15 deer a night and they would come out all over. I am not quite sure what seed they used but I am always been a firm believer in soybeans. It seems as though you need a bigger acreage plot for it because the deer put a hurting on it. If you were to have a small plot, it would kinda be a wash.
Pygmy
Thanks for the input. I'm planning to put in the shatter-resistant forage beans. I plan to plan 4 acres of buckwheat right beside it... The reason for the buckwheat is to condition/improve the soil, but I'm hoping it will help take the pressure off the soybeans so they can mature. I mid August I'll plow the buckwheat under and plant 2 acres of oats and two acres of tunips/rape/radishes. I did the brassicas last year and they provided good late fall/winter forage. the deer loved them.
