Zem18
I have a new firearm and it is loaded with grease and looks to be old grease at that. It is brand new but was manufactured in 2009 so this stuff has been on there for a few years. What should I clean it with? Don't want anything too harsh so I don't mess up the finish. Any suggestions are appreciated.
NFA-ADK
Check with the manufacturer. I would think any gun cleaner would work and should not mess up your finish but to be safe reread the first line. Same cleaner for your barrel should be able to clean any grease on the outside just make sure to wipe it clean.
Lawdwaz
Hoppe's would be the first thing I'd go for. Ain't no manufacturer going to say no to that!! What is the gun?
Zem18
It's my new pistol, an ISSC M22. I have another post on here about it somewhere. Ill post up pics later. Wasn't sure if Hoppes would cut the grease, that's why I asked. I will try it later, have to school shop tonight, oh joy.
thphm
Oderless mineral spirts first to get the heavy stuff off, then a good gun cleaner followed by a light coating of Hoppes gun oil on everything inside and out.
ants
Im a big fan of Hoppe's. I have been using it for the past……….uuhhmmmm………well a long time. It works great. New stuff has come and gone but I have never needed a reason to switch.
Zem18
I have some hoppes#9 solvent I can use and I picked up a 2oz bottle of Otis CLP tonight while school shopping. Never used the clean, lubricate, protect stuff so thought I would try it. Here are some pics - these are before cleaning- will post after cleaning Edited August 21, 2014 by Zemmer18
philoshop
The gunk is called cosmoline, a mixture of vaseline and grease. Military stuff is covered with it to prevent rust during storage and shipping. Like Lurking said, mineral spirits will remove it pretty quickly and is a lot cheaper than the gun stuff for the first cleaning. Just make sure you get a little high quality gun lube on the metal parts right after you remove the gunk, then re-oil daily for the next several days to allow the oil to penetrate a bit. Nice looking gun btw.
Zem18
Thanks for the tips. Ill check the shed for some mineral spirits after work for the initial wipe down. It does look pretty good huh. I'm excited to get it cleaned up and then get it dirty again shooting it.

All the reviews state that Remington is the worst ammo for this pistol but she likes it and eats it up.
loworange88
Good looking pistol. Looks sort of like a Glock.
Zem18
It was called the mini Glock before and after the lawsuit against them but it does not operate like a Glock. Sweet shooting little .
